EXCLUSIVE: Chris Nolan is lining up actresses he’ll meet for two female lead roles in The Dark Knight Rises, the third installment of the Batfranchise which Warner Bros has dated release on July 20, 2012. I’m told one of the roles is a love interest for Christian Bale’s Bruce Wayne, and the other is a villain. The actresses are: Rachel Weisz, Naomi Watts, Blake Lively, Natalie Portman, Anne Hathaway and Keira Knightley. Nolan is keeping the roles under wraps, just the way that he did when he drafted his Inception star Tom Hardy to come aboard to likely play a villain. Deadline broke that story October 13. I’m still not sure what the role is and I believe Hardy took the job without knowing or reading a script that’s still being tweaked.
New ‘Man Of Steel’ Television Spot #6

I hope one of them is Rachel Weisz…she’d make an awesome villain.
I love Weisz, but I don’t think playing a believable villain is within her (considerable) arsenal.
BTW…WHY ISN’T MARION COTILLARD IN THE RUNNING ANYMORE???
She’s purrfect (sorry) for Catwoman–as evidenced in her deadly assassin portrayal in Jeunet’s “A Very Long Engagement”. Did she turn down the role or something????
I love Marion Cotillard as well, but unless her accent improves significantly, Gotham would have to be pretty stupid to not figure out that Catwoman is the only woman with a French accent in town.
LOL Awesome!
Rachel Weisz can play anything and if you have not see her play a villain, watch a film called the shape of things, he’s terrifying in that movie.
There are rumors she may have scheduling conflicts with Cosmopolis which may stop her from being cast in TDKR. I hope that is not the case.
For me it should be Cotillard or Weisz as Catwoman and Knightley as Talia.
Common! Why are there no Latin, Hispanic, Black, African or Asian actresses on this list? Hollywood has to do better. Except for Naomi Watts and Blake Lively – the list is understandable if segregated!
you are pathetic
Dont be a tool. Have you even read the comics? Settle down Clarece the lambs aren’t screaming.
I think what you mean to say is: “Lighten up, Francis!”
Women of color lose out again. Batman lives and works in a CITY. I find it hard to believe that there are no women of color in Gotham. And the lack of them in the comics is no excuse not to include them in a re-imagining for film.
We saw a woman of color play Catwoman and looked how that turned out.
Halle Berry was excellent as Catwoman. She should have won an oscar had it not been for the racist Academy. Obama 2012
Halle didn’t even deserve the Oscar she DID get, and that was actually a good movie!
Excuse me! Halle Berry did a fantastic job portraying catwoman-many feel she was the BEST one.Personally I think it was a tie between her and Michelle. In any case-the movie she was in sucked- but she performed the role very well!
Yep, white people tend to make movies about, shock!, white people! Just like Spike Lee makes movies about black people. There aren’t many women in these movies anyway. Rachel was the only one, really.
I’m just really tired of people crying moar about race and gender in movies. Why not moan about having more Americans in the next one since there have been so many Brits in the last two?
very good point!
Who Cares if there isnt any black hispanic or asian People On this List I dont recall Them Mentioning any Names of Villains i mean Maybe if the villain was any of those in the comic they would be in the Movie ….
Oh please… There were plenty of different races in the Dark Knight (although they were mostly mob bosses). Maybe Bruce Wayne is partial to white women. I know you think this makes him exceedingly racist, but I don’t like it when movies cast different races seemingly just to have a token non-white character. It sort of cheapens the movie. Besides, if the whole list of actresses was black, no one would dare ask why there were no white women on it, so just don’t complain.
I find comments like this amusing because if they include or reimagine characters that are black, Latino, etc. and they are portrayed as stereotypes or if none of them are in a positive light, then it’s still “racist”.
Nope, all the girls in this list are A.I.L.F.’s. Way too hot and comely to be evil and despicable. Try Ellen DeGeneres, Sue Sylvester, maybe Mindy Sterling or Kristen Johnston.
how about maxine waters?she scares the hell out of me!!!she doesnt have to act,she can just be herself!!!
hathaway or knightly(!!!) as harley quinn. watts as the love interest.
I love Rachel Weis, she’s a fantastic actress. I’m mesmerized every time she’s on the screen. And she has a dark side. I’d love to see it come out in Batman.
Without any ‘racist rants’ like the earlier comments, I actually would love to see an actress of color in one of these roles. Even the TV Batman of the ’60′s had a little bit diversity going on(Eartha Kitt anyone?). Unfortunately many British, European, and Aussie directors like Christopher Nolan, Peter Jackson, etc. have little diversity in their own lives, so it does not naturally occur to them to consider this ideology.
I’m not trying to take anything away from the Keira Knightely’s or Blake Lively’s of the world, but this is a boring casting field. Even old James Bond likes to mix it up every now & then! People love the women they pick for his films and those producers seem to get get the fact that this is a diverse world!
Zoe Saldana? The young lady pulled in several billion in receipts to date. Or Devon Aoki, Rosario Dawson, Dichen Lachman, Q’orianka Kilcher, Penelope Cruz or Kerry Washington. Kerry makes a good villain.
Zoe Saldana hasnt pulled in several billions…James Cameron did.
Zoe Saldana, was the main character besides Sam Worthington and they were key in making the movie successful and raking in millions. Hay got a question for you, what have you accomplished in your shitty life?
Hmm.. all those actresses arent white on your list.. little racist are we? lol
True! I like ur list. Have a variety of asian, black, latino, and white actress to choose from.
I adore Rachel Weisz! She elevates everything she’s in and she makes the beast meanie ever (Shape of Things, anyone?)
All great actresses, although one of these actress is actually a broomstick and therefore should be disqualified; I’m pretty sure I saw Keira Knightley at the New York Quiddich fest, being ridden around by a Seeker.
YES YES YES.
I love Batman so much it hurts, and I love the Nolan films, but I don’t think I could handle one with Knightly in. Please don’t fail me now guys =(
I think Hardy will be Black Mask (a costumed mobster – keeping with nolans ‘real’ tone), and Catwoman will be involved (she killed Black Mask in the comics). As for the second female, im thinking Vicki Vale (a journalist looking into batman?), other than that they may do Talia al ghul getting revenge for the first movie (but that would be a little on the nose for me).
For once I agree with you, but Natalie Portman would make a sexy Catwoman.
I say, Natalie Portman as love interest and Rachel Weisz as Poison Ivy. Just my two cents…
Blake Lively irks me…
If Lively irks you…… Then Villain. Boom. I would like Portman and Knightly…. But Portman as the villain.
This is a fun game. Love interest vs villain. They call could be love interest (bestill my heart). Villain is more difficult. I’d go with Watts as love interest and Portman is villain. Or maybe….Looking forward to July 2012.
Lively is to acting as William Shatner is to singing; her emoting is the equivalent of talking your way through a song. Not to be confused with rapping, which would imply more vigorous facial movements than Lively is capable of.
Gosh I’m snarky today, must be the Monday blahs.
You obviously didn’t see The Town. Lively was great in that movie, and was a far stretch from G.G.
I say Rachel as his love interest and Natalie as Harley Quinn. Just my opinion.
Or Natalie as the love interest and Scarlet Johansen as Harley Quinn?
portman perfect for villian an wiez as Poison Ivy
I like Hathaway for the love interest, Portman for the villain.
Unless the love interest is Catwoman. Then Portman for Catwoman/love interest, and Knightly for the villain.
I don’t think Hathaway would make a good villain, so that’s why I’d dump her if Portman were Catwoman/love interest. Knightly’s more likely to pull off the villain thing.
Not interested in Weisz, Watts or Lively. (The main complaint with Weisz being she’s been around forever… and THE MUMMY movies were her “superhero” role…
)
I feel like Natalie Portman is in every other movie lately. Give some other girls a chance.
Yeah, me too. To be honest, I’m rooting for Blake for a role. She’s a good actress who deserves more feature film “breakout” type roles. Also, Keira should be in this movie, hands down.
Agree with Blake. I’m dying to see what she can / will do in future films. Loved her in “The Town”/ Just want her off “Gossip Girl” so she can move on / grow up to more adult roles. Naomi Watts – I like her too, but lately she just seems to be up for every role and always getting the gig. would rather see some new ‘blood’ get more roles.
She already has Green Lantern, I’d say that’s quite big enough. She doesn’t have to go ruining Batman too with her mumbling
I hope Naomi Watts gets one of them. And I hope the female villain is Harley Quinn. She has never been put to film before and it would be an interesting way to continue the Joker story line without actually showing the Joker.
Yikes; I’m not seeing that, plus she’s way older than Christian Bale by a good 10 years.
I’ve been hoping that since TDK released. But I doubt they will write Harley in there and not have the Joker, even if he is referenced once or twice in the movie. Doable, but unlikely.
Spoiler Alert!
This is an actual fact. The villians are:
Tom Hardy as Deadshot and the female villain is Catwoman, obviously. And Two-Face is not returning.
And your source?
Gee, why don’t you just ask “Steve” for his real name while your at it?
Nope. Incorrect!
No, no, no.
Tom Hardy as the Ten-Eyed Man and the female villain is Sondra Fuller, the female Clayface! Duh!
Actual fact. I’ve read a Batman comic and everything!
I love it. Another example of why Kurt Busiek always wins. I didn’t think I’d see that outside a comics forum.
After talking to Chuck Norris, he says he is going to round-house some sense in Nolan and demand Mr. Freeze in TDKR.
If it’s Blake Lively, I’ll throw up. She’s one of the most grating actresses out there. Anne Hathaway is almost as annoying.
Please pick between Rachel Weisz or Naomi Watts.
I recently saw an early screening of “Love And Other Drugs” , starring Anne Hathaway. Hathaway is a knockout in this movie . In this film, she has never been more sexier , raw, vixen-ish, funny, charismatic, and compelling . I’m rooting for Anne and Rachel Weisz.
Here, Here!
That doesnt mean shed be a good Batman actress.
A:so to all the non-realists who want Clay Face, Poison Ivy, et. al. you obviously don’t understand Nolan’s revisioning of a realistic Batman
/rant
Let’s reunite Natalie Portman and Keira Knightley, the way they look so alike will make the story more complex.
I completely agree!!
The female leads will probably have no impact on the box office. Chris Nolan and his Batman franchise will deliver huge global audiences.
All of these women are ‘established’, but wouldn’t it be interesting if Chris Nolan explored the possibility of introducing lesser known talent in one or both of the female leads?
Just a thought.
My thoughts exactly. I’d rather see some new talent rather than the same old faces, some of whom I’ve never been all that impressed by anyways. As you said, the film doesn’t need a big name actress to pull in viewers.
Exactly. Same old faces every time. What about other actresses like Evan Rachel Wood, Kat Denning, Rachel McAdams, heck even ‘newbie’ Jennifer Lawrence? C’mon Hollywood!
I’m not to sure about the others (especially Kat Denning) but I like the Evan Rachel Wood idea. She has a natural darkness to her that would play well in a Batman movie.
Evan Rachel Wood would be amazing
I would like to see Jennifer Lawrence, but she’s currently working on the new X-men movie as Mystique, so not sure if she’d have the time to do the work.
Right on … and no film needs a big name actress or actor anymore.
Umm….no…Cotillard, Weisz, Watts, Portman or Knightley please.
I would like to see Eva Green considered also.
Cast Blake Lively for one of the roles, she’s by far the most attractive of the bunch and we need some fresh faces in these big budget action flix. Natalie Portman and Rachel W have been doing this for a while now ya know…time to make forward progress…
Blake Lively is a pathetic actress. I don’t get the hype at all.
Blake’s already going to be in Green Lantern, another DC comic. Since she’s reportedly tapped for everything, she’s not really a fresh face anymore.
Plus, I can’t understand a word that girl mumbles.
Hope most of the cast remains the same…we especially LOVED seeing Tom Berenger on the big screen!!
Um… you do realize INCEPTION wasn’t a Batman movie… right? Just saying…
Hathaway and Weisz could be a good choice too for a change. Anne can play as Batman’s love interest and Weisz could be poison Ivy.
You know who would make a great Catwoman. And stick with me here….MICHELLE RODRIGUEZ. She’s sexy, tough, and has a raw and mysterious quality that Catwoman has always possessed. Let one of those white washed, predictable “let’s put them in every movie ever made” actresses play his vanilla love interest and let the sexy Catwoman be as she should be: DIVERSE.
worst idea I have ever heard
No, not feeling this one. Michelle Rodriguez is a good B-movie supporting actress, and she was OK in Avatar, but let’s face it: She can’t carry a major Supporting Actress role in a blockbuster movie. And she can’t fill in that catsuit as well as the women listed above.
Everyone flipped their lid when Heath was cast as the Joker and look how that turned out.
As for the other responses, Naomi and Natalie have no body. They can’t fill a cat suit by any means. Rodriguez on the other hand has got one of the best bodies in Hollywood hands down. Didn’t you see Machete? And if she couldn’t carry a blockbuster, she wouldn’t be part of the leading cast in like 5 of them over the last 10 years, lol. I know on the surface it seems “crazy” to suggest her, but she just has a “quality” that, with a great director and high quality production, could probably turn out amazingly. Catwoman, in her best form (in comics, the old series, etc) isn’t a pale white woman (with the exception of the amazing Pfieffer performance). My only other suggestion would be Marion Cotillard. She’s got an exotic look and sexuality as well that could work and she’s more “A-list”. But still, I think Rodriguez could work if given the chance.
I don’t know if audiences would be receptive to Michelle Rodriguez as Catwoman. Catwoman’s character starts off as a very shy person who, given circumstances that “wake her up”, dons a more assertive badass vigilante, but at the end of the day, is still a shy, insecure woman with very few friends. We all know Michelle could really rock out the physical action sequences. What I don’t think she would pull off is Selina Kyle, the person under the mask.
Look back at Superman Returns. Routh made a great Clark Kent, but he never convinced anyone he was the Man of Steel.
that’s not the comic book version of catwoman. that’s the tim burton version. since the director is seeking a different direction i doubt he will be going the michelle route. i love her perfomrance, but it in no way represented the comic book version of the character.
In Batman Returns maybe. In the books she’s a tough as hell prostitute who’s inspired by Batman to put on a costume and try to better her life.
Bad example. Routh never convinced anyone he was Clark Kent either. Dude can’t act. He did convince most people he was a plank of wood though. The Michelle Rodriguez fan isn’t completely crazy. She does has a mysterious, edgy quality and far more spark than the typical white bread starlet. I don’t think she quite fits Catwoman, but she definitely needs to be some kick ass superhero/villain of some sort.
Look, she just does not have the acting chops. She does have a great body and is very attractive. When she does stuff like she did in AVATAR she’s great. But Catwoman.Nope.
Check out MR in “Girlfight” and then come back to us.
In the right role, when she’s clean & sober, she can rock a role.
“white washed”? “Vanilla”? “Pale faced”? You are a stupid, racist a–hole….and NOBODY likes your ridiculous casting idea. Go away!
yo, chill out. dude’s got a point: not every principal character/actor in these movies has to be white. expand your thinking before you get accused of being racist. besides, one can’t be racist against white people, if we (‘white people’) hold all the power, which we do. acknowledge your privilege in what you say and move on.
[for the record, i love Rodriguez, too, but don't think she'd be right for catwoman, talia al-ghul or poison ivy, or anyone in nolan's vision of a gritty/crime drama batman for that matter. she can be a little one-note, but maybe that's cause she hasn't gotten a decent role since she came out.]
YES!! I agree. what is he talking bout filling out the suit- she def has the goods to fill it out! better than anyone else listed above for sure. and PLEASE for the love of god anyone but Blake, Ill take a brown paperbag before Id take her!lol
Zoe Saldana as Catwoman
Natalie Portman as Harley Quinn
Zoe Saldana as Catwoman
Billie Piper as Harley Quinn
Done.
Not only is Blake Lively irksome but she’s already in ‘Green Lantern’. Makes no sense to call her in on this movie, whether it’s a connected universe or not.
And Portman is in ‘Thor’. I really wish they would stop making all comic book movies so “in-bred”. Consider other actors, folks.
By the by, yummy pictures of the ladies above, particularly Weisz and Hathaway.
Sigh…really? The only one I could see working is Weisz. Portman is in “Thor”, would she really do the girlfriend role again? Lively has no place on this list. God Nolan, don’t make another Katie Holmes mistake
Villain? Well at least I believe Weisz could throw a punch.
Come on Nolan, find us someone lesser known. You’ve got Bale and Hardy, take the risk and give us someone new and exciting. This group just doesn’t inspire.
Blake Lively is the ONE THING about “Green Lantern” I’m NOT looking forward to. Ugh.
Boring names, take someone from a tv show or a less known instead one of the usual suspects.
Evangeline Lilly as the love interest, Jaime Murray as the villain.
Evangeline Lilly was the worst thing on Lost. Absolutely disposable. So no. Stick to TV and B movies if you must, Lilly, although early retirement would be the best.
Umm…No. Evangeline Lilly is fantastic. Sure, she got some crummy centric episodes, but she did a great job on the show. My guess is that one of the girls will be Talia Al Ghul. Portman and Weisz seem the best suited for me. I mean, let’s be honest. Knightley is just a poor man’s Portman. Watts is fine, but Weisz seems edgier. Lively doesn’t have the chops that these other girls have. So, that leaves Hathaway. In my opinion she seems too nice to be the villain and doesn’t look like she could handle on-screen chemistry with Bale. Weisz as Talia and Portman as the love interest. Of course…Talia could be the love interest, which means the villain is someone else.
Lately, no matter what female role, if it’s importante, the same actress shortlist shows up. Just add Scarlett Johannsson and there you have it.
lol. So true. It’s getting boring. Surprise me Hollywood. Offer up some new names.
Gee I could play a game with these, one of these things is not like the others. Which one is different, do you know?
Seriously? I love Blake and all, but Blake Lively and Natalie Portman…again? They couldn’t stay as love interests in just ONE superhero movie?
I’m going with Rachel Nichols.
Anne Hathaway or Rachel Weisz for Talia Al Ghul!!!!
Natalie Portman or Keira Knightley for a minor love interest.
Please,Nolan!!!!
Probably too much to hope for but it would be nice to see an unknown in the role, since he doesn’t need a “name” to help sell the pic.
Rachel Weisz hands down as the villain. She would kick some ass.
lively-i donth think so.shes already in green lantern so thats impossible
same goes for portman for thor.
if this is the final list then i am 100% sure the roles belong to Rachel Weisz and Naomi Watts
Naomi Watts for Catwoman.
Shit, I’m weak
