EXCLUSIVE: Emmy winner Claire Danes is in talks for the female lead in Showtime’s drama pilot Homeland. The psychological thriller, from former 24 executive producer/showrunner Howard Gordon, would mark Danes’ first series gig since her star-making turn on ABC’s My So-Called Life 15 years ago, which earned her a Golden Globe award and an Emmy nomination. Michael Cuesta (Dexter) is directing Homeland, which is produced by Fox 21. Based on the Israeli format Hatufim aka Prisoners of War, it tells the story of an U.S. Marine Sergeant Scott Brody who is recovered during a drone strike 10 years after going missing during the invasion of Baghdad. It centers on Carrie Anderson – the role that Danes would play – a smart, driven and iconoclastic CIA case officer who tracks down threats to homeland security coming from the Middle East. She receives a tip from an informant that the American POW enjoying a hero’s welcome home has been turned and he is leading the next big strike against the American homeland. The series chronicles Anderson’s efforts to expose Brody and uncover the truth.
Homeland, the first pilot greenlighted by new Showtime entertainment president David Nevins, was written on spec by Gordon, fellow 24 executive producer Alex Gansa and Gideon Raff, the creator of the original series. The three are executive producing with Avi Nir and Ron Telem. After focusing exclusively on features for the past 15 years, Danes ventured into TV as the lead of this year’s acclaimed HBO biopic Temple Grandin, which earned her an Emmy Award.

Please don’t use the word classy when refering to claire danes. She just gives u little to nothing in most everything I’ve scene her in. mimicing isn’t necessarily great acting.
she’s all but unrecognizable in that picture.
I beg to differ. Picture reminds me what if Kristin Chenowith didnt have a quality.
Fantastic actress. She single-handedly elevated T3 to another level with her ability.
Of all the photos of her to choose from, you chose this one…why, exactly?
T3 was actually the movie that came to mind how she brings nothing, except i suppose if you needed a plain jane in terrible jeans and a courderoy suit top to further remind us of the most mundane casting of two supporting leads in Claire Danes and the guy who was John Conner who did that carnival show about goblins and magic on HBO.
Didn’t recognize her from the photo. Too young for botox. Seriously.
She’s prettier when she looks like herself.
SNORE. I feel asleep, get it? She is BORING. Good luck.
I miss the old Claire Danes. The sweet wholesome girl next door who didn’t need make-up to look good. The woman in the picture looks like Britney Spears after a day of shopping on Rodeo.
I`ll be sure to skip this. Not a fan of HOMEWRECKERS.
Sounds more like a Fox show than Showtime.
While I appreciate “Deadline’s” ability to deliver solid news, the “commentators” on this site have degenerated into sad, bitchy wannabe “ain’t it cool (to be a pathetic nerdy loser) geek fest”.
I long for the days when actual INDUSTRY people commented here, not midwest flyover state losers sitting in their parents basement whining how an actress doesn’t get them all hot and bothered anymore when they’re alone with the lotion bottle.
Hey Deadline, how about moderating the comments. Not just for obscenities but also for “moronic single IQ digit fanboy chatter”?
I second this comment.
I don’t understand where all of this hatred comes from.
Claire Danes is a terrific actress. Her performance on My So-Called Life alone makes this an exciting bit of intel — I can’t wait to see her talent on a weekly basis again, digging into a role with a long arc. And to those who are thinking “but that was 15 years ago,” look at her most recent (Emmy winning) work in Temple Grandin, which was truly a great performance.
Ever since DrudgeReport, that right-wing loony site, started linking to Deadline stories, the comments began their descent into idiocy.
The vast majority of the dumb-dumb posts on here are from mean spirited industry folk with axes to grind. The drudge brigade obviously comes to gnash their teeth but you can tell that a lot of the vitriol on this site comes from within.
Schadenfreude is DHD’s #1 sponsor.
So lemme get this straight: LA-based “INDUSTRY” people are pros who know what they’re talking about, but geeks in mommy’s basements talking about actresses should be blocked from the site? And you can tell the difference? So many things wrong with that attitude I don’t even know where to begin…
Let me just say I’m a working screenwriter who doesn’t live in LA. I come to town about 5-6 times a year for business, and about a year or a year-and-a-half ago just about every last one of the “industry pros” I was meeting with (my reps included, but development people as well) could not shut the fuck up about Megan Fox and how hot she was and everyone on earth wants to fuck her and/or be her and she’s going to save the movie business.
These “INDUSTRY” pros were every bit as bad as any pimply-faced geek in mommy’s basement — and now look where Fox is. Every last one of them was telling me to write roles for her or think of roles that would appeal to her or think about how to pitch for jobs that could star her — yeah, I could probably use new reps, but I’m stuck with the ones I’ve got…
Just saying look in the industry mirror before you launch into tired old flyover state hate.
must be those new longer lashes she’s been doing lengthy commercials for. looking good, claire!
Her performance in “My So Called Life” – at 15 – is one of my all-time favorites in the history of TV. Her work as Angela Chase was incredibly tender, poignant, vulnerable and truthful, and all at such a young age. So glad she’s coming back to TV…
She actually did the pilot at age 13! And what a shame T3 couldn’t be as good as T4….. NOT!
I’m in as long as Jordan Catalano and Brian Krakow make cameos and we find out by the end of the season that Danes’ character is actually Angela Chase. I need a MSCL fix!
Sounds like a really bad show. Total 24 retread. Aren’t we learning from THE EVENT that the concept’s a little played out, not to mention the fact that one more show dedicated to Middle East bashing isn’t going to help a culture already dedicated to ignorance and xenophobia.
Yeah, I liked this story when it was called “The Manchurian Candidate”.
Right on, Peggy! Finally, an intelligent comment in this sea of idiotic babble…
Why are comments boards so full of haters? Claire Danes is lovely and has a unique, special beauty. Unfortunately the woman in this picture is not Claire Danes.
Brody’s Wife: “You’re talking about my husband.”
Anderson: “No. I’m talking about a man looking like your husband. It’s been ten years, Dana. Lot of things happen in ten years.Ten years ago, Friends was still on television. Ten years ago, cell phones looked like plastic dildos. Ten years ago, we still gave a damn about a presidential blow job.”
Brody’s Wife: “He’s my husband!”
Anderson: “Care to explain to me, then, why your husband’s been visiting the Ground Zero mosque? He didn’t tell you, did he? Look at the photos, Dana. You think a good American would go there?”
That show can only be a success, if America still is in a bunker mentality next fall. And even if America is (who knows?), foreign sales of this will be so in the crapper, because the rest of the Western markets have moved on.
Shame, really. I like Claire Danes.
Claire Danes is a stunning woman that has matured like a fine wine in her fifteen + years in the industry. She brings intelligence, grace, humility and a naturalistic every day person to her roles. She shined in Temple Grandin and the industry took notice! Kudos, Claire!!
She is a beautiful and very talented actress BUT the blonde hair, the tan and the heavy make-up ages her and that’s not good, especially because she doesn’t need any of those AND she is still young.
“It centers . . . . a smart, driven and iconoclastic CIA case officer who tracks down threats to homeland security coming from the Middle East.”
sounds riveting.
This is GREAT NEWS!!!!
I have been going back and forth on whether to cancel showtime.
this will make it alot easier.
“hello, yes I would like to CANCEL SHOWTIME please. thank you”.
Guess you didn’t see Temple Grandin. She was amazing!
