This has always been the advantage of pitching an international format — you have a tape to show with your pitch. There have been a couple of projects that applied that model to original ideas this season, with producers financing the filming of a demo that is taken out to the networks. Jamie Foxx did it with drama Tommy’s Little Girl, which landed at NBC, and Rob Shalhoub and Rani Aliahmad did it with Homeland Insecurity, a workplace comedy that just sold to CBS. The project, set in the world of airport security, is based on the web series of the same name produced by Shalhoub and Aliahmad’s Trend Media. The two created the project with UTA-repped Josh Greenbaum. Greenbaum and Ben McMillan co-wrote the Web series and are also writing the CBS version. Sony TV is producing the adaptation, with studio-based writers David Guarascio and Moses Port set to supervise and executive produce. Shalhoub and Aliahmad launched Trend Media over a year ago to create content and TV shows. For the latter, “we thought the best way was to develop projects that are meant for television, scale down the production and shoot a short-form presentation,” Shalhoub said. “It’s nice to get (the presentation) in front of TV executives instead of asking them to envision what the project is about.” Added Aliahmad, “If a show doesn’t scale back to television, we can always try to recoup our investment through new media distribution.” That was also the backup plan for Homeland Insecurity, which was shot on a $70,000 budget, but it sold to CBS after first landing at Sony where it was packaged with UTA-repped veteran comedy writers Guarascio and Port. CAA-repped Trend Media, who also is exploring content for online networks and for the fledgling 3D TV networks, has 2 other projects in the works, a comedy and a dark sci-fi drama. Here is the trailer for Homeland Insecurity:

god that looks awful. a $#*!ty ripoff of The Office, set in an airport, and minus the (approx.) two laughs that The Office aims for these days.
To be fair, The Office is a rip off of Christopher Guest’s work.
So I take it this project is being developed for Showtime, because why would CBS take a project like this and shoehorn it into a multi-cam format? Seems like a waste to add canned laughter and make it overly broad.
You’ve heard of SHIT MY DAD SAYS, right? They’ll find a way to do it… Badly… But they’ll find a way.
Reno 9/11.
Comparing this piece of crap to “The Office” is idiotic. It’s a rip-off alright, but look no further than “Reno 911″ for its inspiration.
I really hate this!!! Not the “Sizzle” but the idea that these guys spent $70,000 on a sizzle tape and then sell it to the studio who then sells it to the Network… The Net bought the idea off a piece of tape and now of the Suits in development land will be demanding the same. It has been the MO in alternative TV for years, I hope to G_d that this doesn’t become the norm in scripted. What we don’t need is more suits making decisions that have no vision or the cajones to make a decision.
Cajones? Make a decision? We are making a decision based on the produced sizzle. Did you not read that part? As far as the cajones, you should sack up and actually prove that your project is funny. We read enough shitty scripts, show us how excited you are about your project by taking the time to write, cast, shoot, and edit it. This is the direction the business is heading, the cost of producing is so low these days how can you not shoot? Or you could continue to waste your days at Starbucks working on your shitty script.
P.S. No matter what the project we suits make the decisions.
Two things, guys:
1) It’s “cojones”, not “cajones”. Cajones means “drawers”.
2) I’m all for sizzle, but this ain’t it. The execs do make the decisions, until they lose their job, because they’re highly, HIGHLY replaceable. Just like writers/filmmakers/showrunners are. Why? Because most people insist on making replaceable shit and the execs keep lapping it up because it’s presented in a format they recognize and hell, it sure beats having anything resembling “vision”, dunnit?
This is why when execs do come face to face to talent, they’re best advised to fucking bow to it. And conversely, this is also why, when talent comes across the rare exec that is actually worth his/her paycheck, they should also bow. And hopefully work together, giving us more Mad Mens and less S^*t My Dad Says’s.
I am sure truth is funnier and or scarier than fiction in the airport security biz but full body scanners, cavity searches and bored depraved employees could make for a hilarious mix.
That cost $70,000? Looks like it cost about §700.
What, they couldn’t even find some decent out of work actors with that money?
There’s nothing wrong with the workplace/mockumentary format if it’s done well — but this surely is not. The key is that it has to look real, not overacted and slapstick. This is overacted and slapstick, it’s better as a dumbed-down multicam.
Still… it is a million times funnier than $#!t My Dads Says.
The pitch must’ve been spectacular because the video is brutal. Smells like a pre-emptive buy to keep it off other networks’ piece of shit schedules.
What’s wrong w/ ripping off Reno 911 and the Office? Parks and Rec, Modern Family, etc. followed that formula and it’s working out pretty well for them…At least it’s not another “Reality” show or some philanthropic crap about rich squares going “undercover” attempting to relate to ordinary folk…sure, the show could use some tweeking (ie better camera work and a couple casting adjustments), but nothing some $$ and direction couldn’t fix…any show willing to bring the “c-word” to network tv is good tv (you know the “c-word”…CUNT)…I dig where this show “could” go…people who don’t find the trials and tribulations of airport terminals entertaining need to get out of the parents’ basement…when the show does get picked up, I will watch it and it WILL be funn(ier) than half the crap out there…and I do agree that it may belong on another network (ie comedy central or FX)…CBS may not have the balls to take it on…or do they?
Looks hysterical-can’t wait!
man, there are some haters on this site!!! i think it looks pretty funny. i just flew through burbank and the tsa dude made me take off my flip flops. crazytown.
Wow… some of you are so quick to judge. Personally, I need more than a few moments of a trailer
to form that strong of an opinion.
What I do know is some of the best comedy has come out of real life drama AND going through
any airport, post 911, has become quite dramatic.
I think this show has a good premise. I want to see where they take it.
This looks like it will be hilarious. Think of how many anecdotes you have just from your own hellish airport experience! I especially love Patty.
Waitta minute. Those writer are not white, those aren’t caucasian names… and they sold a project. THAT IS SO F-ING AWESOME!!!
This is a great idea for a tv show. The angry comments on this site are short sighted. If everyone judged the original rough cuts, pilot sizzle ideas and any other works in progress nothing would ever be made. Pessimists should leave this business – there is no room for your negativity in the creative world.
If CBS is smart they will make this show and have the audience send in their true life airport security stories. A lot of people can relate to this!
I swear that dude with the mustache works at LAX in the delta terminal. this show looks funny.
So much anger! Let’s see what CBS does with the this before we judge. I’m sure they’re well aware that it can’t look and feel like the Office and needs its own personality. You have to admit – the show has the potential to be pretty damn funny if done well. Good luck!
OMG Patty Wortham is my YBB teacher and she has one of the best senses of humor evah!!! Take her to network with you!!!
If this is a web series, then where is it? I googled the creators names and the actors names and “homeland insecurity web series” and can’t find it anywhere. So was this even an actual web series?
wow — they got travis junior, Neicy’s character, Clemmy, the main woman’s even doing a Weigel impression… the jokes are straight outta reno 911! — the hazmat suit stuff, Travis going through the Xray machine (like he did in the reno movie), they even have a guy in short-shorts…
reno even did a homeland security episode, it’s first season, with Oscar Nunez from the Office.
are the Reno guys getting a check for this?
Hilar & inspiring. I can’t wait to see an episode about all the goodies that the security workers take home from passengers–David Yurman watches, $300/oz. caviar eye cream, and the passengers response. This is groundbreaking news for writers to see a webisode become and episode. Power to the Pen!
this could be really funny if done right. airport security is sooooo ready to be mocked!
“Via Web?” Well, not really. The headline makes it sound like this was a super successful web series with a huge audience and CBS was so impressed that they decided to bring it to network TV. Which isn’t the case. When you read closely, it sounds like these guys shot a pilot and pitched it around. And if it hadn’t sold, then their backup plan was to distribute as a web series. So to say that it came to CBS “via web” is somewhat misleading.
re: casting.
Patty Wortham is comedic napalm. and by that I mean she is pure, pure magic. as long as they keep Wortham in this thing, the show will be awesome. she’s a FUNNY LADY. about time the world gets to see her genius. I am not being sarcastic. she rules.
also wanted to point out that I’ve seen a ton, just a ton of hot 19 year old anorexic blondes with wry senses of humor in America’s airports, working as TSA agents. Cause many TSA agents look like actresses. blonde actresses. am I right? truly a superb casting choice. (I AM being sarcastic)
