Here is Conan O’Brien’s sneak peak at his new talk show at TBS aka Show Zero, which he did online last night. Judging by the 5-minute preview, the new show will be a lot like any other late-night talk shows, with a monologue, celebrity and musical guests. Hopefully there will be some tweaks to the stodgy format or at least more of the jokes/guests and less of the intrusive Diet Coke plugs that take up most of the time in the Show Zero video.

Yup. Just like I remembered his version of the Tonight Show. Still not funny.
Exactly!
How long till TBS pulls the plug on this? June? Next Fall?
Wow this was lame.
And I say this as a Conan fan.
If they call this Show Zero, shouldn’t the sponsor have been Coke Zero? That might have been funnier than anything I saw in the clip.
Keep your day job.
I have always thought of Conan as the Hillary Clinton of late night. Nobody really liked him very much until he was wronged and played the victim card to perfection. He will do well @TBS where he will be lumped with Stewart and Colbert. He was always more niche than commercial. Kind of like water finding its own level.
Judging by the test show I attended last Thursday the format will be the same we’ve seen before – monologue, chit-chat with Andy Richter, a few “Headlines” style jokes, a skit, guest one, guest two, musical guest, credits. The innovation will have to come in what types of skits and jokes they do and what guests they get.
I was always told a polished turd is still a turd…
Conan always saw his Late Night as more cartoonish, as well as more in the vain of Carson’s show, with sketches and running bits overshadowing the guest spots and lame format. But… we’ll see.
A bunch of hype for nothing. What a dud.
Apparently the Jay Leno fan club is quite active on deadline.com. I figured you guys weren’t that web savvy.
Exactly. Why all the hate? And clearly no one got the joke about diet Coke as the sponsor. It was all over the place in this promo to be funny. Andy’s ridiculous comments about the soft drink really play that up.
I’m in my 30′s and a professed Leno fan. Since when is this demographic not considered web savvy?
Why are people all of a sudden so critical of this guy? He looks to be doing the same thing he’s been doing and making tons of money at the same time. I never thought he was funny or entertaining but lets be real here, talent has very little to do with success these days.
Sounds like the same old show he’s been doing for ages.
They’re going to have to do some amazing skits to keep people’s interest. Otherwise Conan’s next show really will be on the internet….
George Lopez is the one who will get screwed the most out of this.
The brown man always takes the fall in the end. And it is a shame because unlike Conan, George Lopez is REALLY funny. Conan is funny in a I’m-a-bored-senior-studying-zoology-at-Penn State kind of way.
I always liked Conan, but come on. We all know the people who hate Leno for being given “The Tonight Show” again WILL NOT tune in to see Conan on TBS. All the FaceBook petitions, Twitter campaigns and yelling on websites will be for nothing because none of those fickle people will watch this.
This is why studio and network executives rarely take a vocal outcry online seriously. Because the people who complain don’t support by watching or buying.
How do you know this? I’ll be watching, and I think many other Conan fans will, too.
I loved Conan’s Late Night show. I thought his Tonight Show was too much like his Late Night show, but I started to warm up to it.
But I think one huge problem Conan has is misguided loyalty to old material. He and his writers ought to look at the best shows Conan has done in the past few years — the shows he made during the writers’ strike — and figure out a way to make the shows as relaxed and human as the strike shows while keeping the writers employed.
I think another thing Conan ought to do is use way fewer abstract comedy games and way more human sketch comedy partners. When Conan is sparring with deranged, metaphorical characters, the sketch may be funny, down-to-earth and arty all at the same time. Even if the sketch isn’t all that funny, it can still be interesting. When a bit like If They Mated has weak punchlines, it simply fails. There’s nothing there but the punchlines.
Finally, I think that, when Conan and his writers are coming up with ideas for him, they’ve got to get beyond the idea that he’s still a grown up date-less high school geek. Maybe he’ll always have an inner geek, but, at this point, he comes off as being more of a polite but ruthless showrunner who probably devotes a lot of his energy keeping himself from having his minions rub people out.
I think any bit he does based on the idea that he’s primarily a high school keep falls flat because it rings false; any bit based on the idea that he’s a ruthless mastermind (or, possibly, a ruthless mastermind with an inner high school geek) tends to work a lot better.
All the hype, the lack of details beforehand, bringing in legitimate guests for a brief “hello”, the one-chord musical performance? The whole thing was basically a prank, a gag. That’s exactly what it was supposed to be – he took the premise of a super-fast talk show and ran with it. It was clever and funny, at least to those who got the joke. I don’t understand the hate.
Conan’s always been one of the more likeable and creative late-night hosts, and I know he’ll bring the goods on TBS. But I agree that hopefully he’ll use his freedom there to branch out a bit more from the usual format. I think he realizes that what makes him stand out is being “crazy” and unpredictable, and that’ll be his strength if he uses it fully.
Why do people that dislike Conan complain about STILL disliking Conan? Pro-tip: if you’re allergic to nuts, don’t eat nuts.
I think we do it hoping someone in there camp may read are comments and maybe rub there chins…
LOL Who watches Conan anymore? They could replace him with carrot top and no one will know the difference.
I have nothing against Conan, he’s obviously an intelligent and funny and talented guy. But the “covering his every move” angle has been a major turn-off.
it was funny to those that like and understand conan’s brand of humor.
if you are team leno, why did you watch in the first place?
Conan is freaking stupid and not funny. Never was and never will be. This show will be over before it begins.
I am Team Leno because I always root for the big-chinned underdog, but I will watch Conan if he brings back Time Travel Week! And takes it SERIOUSLY this time. I really want to believe I’m watching a talk show in the old west.
“…I always root for the big-chinned underdog…”
Leno as the underdog. OK, I’ll give it to you. THAT’s funny!
In this case, content is irrelevant. The geniuses at TBS scheduled him head-to-head with Jon Stewart, the most powerful comedian in the world right now. Conan will get killed in his timeslot, especially since he wants the exact same demo as Stewart. If TBS really wants Conan to do well they’ll put him at 11:30, head-to-head with Leno and his older demo.
Pipe down, gramps.
