This should seal Darren Criss’ deal to become a regular on Glee. The show’s producers just announced that Glee‘s rendition of Katy Perry’s Teenage Dream debuted at #1 in digital track sales with 214,000 tracks sold, the first time a Glee track has done so. (Glee‘s signature song, cast’s version of Journey’s Don’t Stop Believin’ reached #2 in May 2009.) The feat is very impressive as the song’s performers don’t include a single member of the core Glee cast. Criss sang the solo literally seconds after his character was introduced on the show as a recurring.

And people thought Music videos where dead. HA! Television is a powerful sales tool.
As fine as “Glee” is as a dramatic series, it was designed as a life support system for music download sales. Bull’s-eyes on both counts!
YEAH TUFTS BEELZEBUBS!!! (They did all the vocals except for the lead, and Ed Boyer arranged the track).
go bubs.
Whatever it was “designed” for, I like it… and I’m a straight dude.
Get gays off television. They make me sick literally.
then don’t watch!
Shouldn’t there be a way to report an abusive post?
Dave Karofsky, is that you again?
I don’t watch Glee, except for the pilot but I watched that rendition of Teenage Dream on YouTube last night and again this morning, it made me so gay, gay as in “happy”, just a great performance and that Darren Criss guy is a true star, in age where you can become a star without doing much (I’m not talking about The Situation and Snooki they are funny, deserving).
Its such a cliche to say, but people who are obsessed with hating gays are probably closeted homosexuals that grow up in intolerant communities so as a nation, we have to pity you. Straight men aren’t worried about gay people and who they love, we’re focused on ourselves and getting girls. If anything, a genetically blessed gay man that if straight could be your competition for a girl, the fact that he prefers men, only increases your chances of getting laid.
TV is a medium for everyone and needs to reflect the actual society we live in, not a 50′s fantasy land, a nation where gay, straight and bisexual people of every stripe exist. You can still strive for that picket fences suburban ideal but sometimes that nuclear family is going to include a two mommy or two husband family.
Those who call themselves Republicans and are against gays in the military/gay marriage are rejecting the true ideals of the Goldwater, Republican dogma. Government should never have a say in how someone lives their live, equality and its unconstitutional to stand in the way of someone’s pursuit of happiness as long as that happiness doesn’t violate others (which the marriage of two consenting adults does not). (I’m going off on several tangents here but you get what I’m saying).
You’re an IDIOT!!
MTVis4Gays, you are to straight guys what Flava Flave is to black people – a huge embarrassment we hope we’re not actually judged by.
MTVis4gays you shouldn’t be bitter because you had kids with your sister. Now that was you choice and your just going to have to live with it.
That’s cuz when GLEE flips it up on their song choices (IE a guy singing a girls song, an R&B “Singing in the Rain,” mash-ups) they thrive… much more so when they simply copy the record (IE Amber Riley singing Dreamgirls “I’m Not Going,” sounding like the orig.)
I smell a major label record deal for Criss!
This is great news for the very talented (and super dreamy) Darren Criss and his many new admirer’s as well as for the industry and especially for struggling gay youth. I am a fan of “Glee” in general but was particularly taken by this performance and scene. It was not only extremely entertaining and lovely to listen to, but for me at least quite poignant. I’m not ashamed to say it brought tears to my eyes as I could only imagine how much seeing a scene like that on a popular network TV show would have meant to me as a closeted and terrified gay High School teenager back in 1975. Everyone involved is to be commended not only on the amazing entertainment value they are providing, but the amazing social value they are providing as well. I am ecstatic to hear this performance has resonated so strongly with so many, I would conjecture on many different levels as well. Bravo to Darren, Chris Colfer and the entire “Glee” team. Also my appreciation.
To the hateful ass. You really should not comment on anything. I am a straight guy but it makes me get real pissy when guys like you act like they represent straight guys. You are clearly an uneducated pathetic mess who should go back to their ugly girlfriend with the facial hair. How dare you act as if you understand anything relating to this Industry or life in general. Firstly, Darren is not gay and he did not have a problem with the part he played. You are so fu-ken offensive I wish the guy that kissed the gay actor on the show would kiss you too and than beat the crap out of you. Go back to your pathetic life and stop commenting. Nicki put this guy to rest and block him. How stupid are you “get gays of tv” you idiot they are hear to stay and always have been. If you reveal yourself you little coward bitch you will be sent home. Sorry to bother everyone with this but I could not help myself.
I have to admit that as much as I think there’s a place for “gay themes” and gay characters on television, GLEE is beginning to overdo it a bit.
I feel like the last four or five episodes have focused on gay-this and gay-that. Okay, we get it, the dude’s gay and he’s having issues. But to have the jock character suddenly turn out to be gay…and then this new character be gay…enough already. You don’t see the straight characters being “straight” all the time. There is something to be said for subtlety.
That’s because str8s hugging, kissing, holding hands, and “acting str8″ in public won’t get them attacked, harrassed, or even killed – but if you’re gay/lesbian (or just assumed gay/lesbian), the simple act of showing public displays of affection or simply talking or dressing a certian way perceived as “gay” can more often than not get you bullied, beat-up, bashed, or even murdered.
So much for subtlety.
p.s. Football jock Karofsky clearly represents all those bullying homophobes who are actually closeted, self-loathing gays inside – the truth is the vast majority of anti-gay bullies are hostile and homophobic because they’re only afraid to admit they’re most gay themselves and/or choose to deal with it/mask it by lashing out at other to distance themselves from the truth so others won’t see it – it’s called projection.

So the last four or five episodes of GLEE “have focused on gay-this and gay that” and you’re sick of it? You’re sick of four or five episodes on one TV program? Wake up. The entire HISTORY of television for the last seventy-five years has been straight-this and straight-that. How do you think THAT felt for gay people? So MOVE OVER and make room for the new world order. It’s about time. And if the pendulum has to swing a little farther one way before it balances out, so be it.
“You don’t see the straight characters being “straight” all the time.”
Yes I do. This week I saw Will and Terri being straight. Mercedes was also being straight. There was a lot more straight in this episode – and in every episode – than there was gay. Last week, in the big gay episode, I saw Sam and Quinn being straight, as well as Mike and Tina, Artie and Brittany, Puck and Santana, and Finn and Rachel. Even coach Bieste was throwing her heterosexuality in my face. What is it with you straight people? Why can’t you keep your sexuality off our screens?
Well done, Andrew…
I’m a bit obsessed with the guy.
I downloaded his EP. It’s been on repeat all day.
Then I re-watched the Potter Musical.
Me, too. I had never seen Darren Criss before in my life and when he appeared on the TV screen, I stopped and said WHO is THAT!? I don’t remember the last time someone with that much pure charisma appeared on TV. I couldn’t take my eyes off him!
Or keep watching and get sicker and die.
Glee is truly a great show. I love everything about it. But it is drifting away from pure fun into after-school special territory. Keep it light and let the lessons come organically.
Anon, you DO see the straight being being straight all the time. You see it whenever two heterosexual characters kiss, hug, talk about their relationship, sing about love and relationships and so forth. We see straight “themes” every single second of every single day in every single episode of every single show.
In case you hadn’t noticed, but teen bullying – especially of gay teens – has been in the news a lot lately. Glee is just reflecting that. And, as insulting as it to see someone imply that a jock character being gay is somehow preposterous, there are indeed gay men who like sport and a lot of gay adult men were in the closet in high school. Many of them had girlfriends, too. It’s not that big of a deal.
Makes what history?
It is a pure talent for every single one on Glee, included Darren Criss. Does it matter he is gay or straight?
Just enjoy the Show!
I am not gay but I really do on what he is doing on the show and I am happy he became a regular on Glee! HOORAY!
Glee has completely overdone its homosexual storyline to the point where it has turned off many viewers. I am not particularly interested in watching it anymore. I just want to be entertained, not have some GLBA agenda shoved down my throat. Gay characters with the occasional plot line are not a problem. Turning the majority of the show into some drag queen drama is a major downer.
