EXCLUSIVE: I hear MTV is finalizing its succession plans in light of the pending departure of the network’s president of programming Tony DiSanto. I hear that the bulk of DiSanto’s responsibilities will be divided between EVP scripted development David Janollari and EVP MTV Production Chris Linn. Janollari will continue to oversee all scripted development for the network and may take over
some unscripted responsibilities as he is expected to oversee all West Coast development. Chris Linn, who has been the current executive on MTV’s biggest series Jersey Shore while also heading development and production of TV movies and production of pilots and series, is expected to take oversight of East Coast development.
Meanwhile, MTV general manager Stephen Friedman who was already overseeing scheduling for the smaller MTV nets such as MTV2 and mtvU, is expected to also do so for the flagship MTV as well as take over the specials and events portion of DiSanto’s portfolio. Friedman already reports to Van Toffler, president of MTV networks Music/Logo/Films Group. Janollari and Linn are also expected to report to him. It took over a month for MTV to close Janollari’s new deal, which is also how long it took for his first pact when he joined the network in January. MTV is expected to make the announcement this coming week.
DiSanto and his top lieutenant, SVP series development Liz Gateley, are leaving at the end of the year to work on their newly launched production company, in which Ben Silverman’s IAC-owned Electus has a stake. MTV won’t appoint a direct replacement for the network’s unscripted head Gateley, but the network has been preparing for her departure with 2 key appointments in the unscripted area in the past few months: Lauren Dolgen was promoted to SVP of MTV Series Development, West Coast and well-known reality producer Shannon Fitzgerald was hired as VP series development, East Coast.

Ugh. Janolari is a tool and everyone knows it.
I have utter confidence in David Janollari’s ability to basically assume the role of Tony DiSanto. Janollari is a proven success as a development exe and an independent TV producer. He did wonderful work over at The WB (does anybody know why he didn’t become president of The CW?), and he really has an eye for scripted dramas and dramedies. I hope he will ultimately develop projects and bring some scripted shows to MTV’s primetime block. (I think it will be good even if he can bring smart animation back, “Aeon Flux,” “Daria”-type fare.)
Two major movements surfacing from the former owners of The Greenblatt Janollari Studio: Bob Greenblatt and everything surfacing at NBCU and David Janollari taking the helm at MTV.
Thanks, Nelie, for all of your wonderful reporting. Nikki’s right; you totally deserve your spot on the “Elle” power list!
Jeffrey, you ask why Janolari was ousted from WB/CW?
Did you ever see “Just Legal”? Or “Twins”? Or “Pepper Dennis”?
He basically ruined what WB stood for: quality.
Janollari helped destroy The WB. Cancelled Angel, and gave us Twins. Smaaart move, there, David. He and Garth Ancier are two of the most overrated (by those who don’t actually know them) tools in the industry. Garth’s decision to “kill” Michigan J. Frog removed an iconic image America was familiar with. In the end, The WB was nothing like the network Jamie Kellner imagined and created.
Janollari never “got” The WB. His one-year tenure was complete and dismal failure–and someone above actually wonders why he didn’t take over The CW??!! What, is Janollari posting here, too?
Seriously, I hope this guy gets moved to all the other networks (ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX) eventually, because his presence there is only good for all the other nets. MTV, you’re getting exactly what you deserve.
I am excited to see what David does at MTV. I think he’s a great executive and a mensch.
not only will they assume the role of Disanto, but they’ll do a million times better than that putz
