EXCLUSIVE: Dollhouse star Eliza Dushku is returning to series television as the female lead in Mike Robe’s TNT drama pilot Bird Dog, while D.B. Sweeney has landed the lead in Dean Devlin’s hourlong TBS pilot Brain Trust.
Bird Dog is a mystery fashioned around an unlikely partnership of two cops who happen to be father and daughter. It centers on Gail McGrath (Dushku), who followed in her father’s footsteps in becoming a police officer but had little else in common with him. She left the big city she had grown up in to move to a small Pacific Northwestern town where she was patrolling the streets until her dad, a NYC cop, showed up on her front doorstep to join her as her new partner. Now this father-daughter team, call sign “Bird Dog,” is being put to the test — not only in solving crimes, but with each other. Robe wrote the script and is directing the pilot. Warner Horizon is producing. Buffy the Vampire Slayer alumna Dushku, repped by UTA and the Collective, recently guest starred in a highly-rated episode of The Big Bang Theory.
Brain Trust, written by Marco Schnabel, centers on Detective Billy Doyle (Sweeney), whose career and life have hit rock bottom after he accidentally ends his partner’s career. Doyle’s life gets turned around, however, when a recent murder case gets unexpected and unconventional help from three hyper-smart geniuses from a private think tank. If Doyle can survive the chaos and keep these new partners in line, they just may be the antidote to resurrect his career and, ultimately, his life. Devlin’s Electric Entertainment is producing. Don Buchwald-repped Sweeney has been recurring on NBC’s The Event this season.

Maybe “Brain Turst” will employ some of those recently retired think tank geniuses from “Rubicon”
Eliza Dushku is box office and tv ratings poison. She knows one way to act — bland.
And DB Sweeney should just stay home and keep collecting those residual checks from Cutting Edge.
This show will fail.
I don’t agree with your comment, but I could not stop laughing after the Cutting Edge remark.
it’s two different shows, jack-ass
Don’t be such an @ss-hat. Both actors suffered from FOX’s shortsighted vision and deserve another chase on TV.
Enrico Colantoni for the dad?
same thought ocurred to us…
loved veronica mars
another father daughter combo…
luck basbe xx
I’m a huge fan of Eliza Dushku. Very talented actress, but just sort of a hard sell. I hope this works out for her.
i am only going to watch it for Eliza Dushku
Congratulations, Eliza!
Hopefully this show will do well. I didn’t really pay attention to Tru Calling, but I loved her on BTVS and Dollhouse. Fingers crossed for my girl!
Elated to see Dushku working. Dollhouse was a criminally under-rated show. Plus I want to marry her and have many many many many good looking children.
Sadly..”Bird Dog”??? This is how many unsold pilots done over the last 10 years. This is so outdated and unoriginal that i’ve already tuned out who owed who a favor/…
We definitely need MORE shows about geniuses interacting and solving crimes with their intellectual inferiors.
Eliza Dushku peaked with True Lies. Sort of like how Kirsten Dunst peaked with Interview With The Vampire. Its been downhill for them both since 1994.
These are pilots. That does not mean they will become TV shows.
Finally DB Sweeney gets a series. That’s long overdue. Where the hell has he been? A great actor with grit and no-nonsense. Good job TNT!
OMG, I just looked up Eliza Dushku’s age, and she’ll be thirty by the end of the year! I’m starting to feel old, y’all.
I have seen some bad stuff that Eliza has been in, but I think she is an extremely underrated actress and I definitely don’t think she is bland. For some reason I remember her performance in the fourth season of Angel to be exceptional, as well as her role in Dollhouse.
I just don’t know. I loved Eliza in Buffy and Angel, and enjoyed her on Tru Calling but she just didn’t have the acting chops for Dollhouse and I didn’t enjoy her appearance on the Big Bang Theory. She’s attractive but I really don’t think she’s a very good actress. I’m curious to see who they get to play the dad though.
OH MAN can I do a bigger YAWN?
Why does it always have to be some kind of burned out cop?
As far as Eliza Dushku goes she needs to go back to acting class
I loved DB Sweeney in “Cutting Edge” and the tv show “Strange Luck”. He such an incredibly natural actor, similar to Jeff Bridges & Jeff Daniels. Sweeney is a very subtle actor.
I wish Eliza the best of luck, but I do wish she’d try something other than tough girl. Just for once I’d like to see her soft, mostly helpless, and a little bit goofy.
She did. In Dollhouse.
And I think this is probably a good role for her, though the show will be entire dependent on the chemistry between her and the lead.
One of the greatest writers in tv history, Joss Whedon, called Eliza Dushku a versatile actress. I think his praise alone says how good she is as an actress.
Don’t people typically heap praise upon those with which they work? I think her body of work should speak to how good of an actress she is versus hyperbole and spin.
Poor Dushku. She deserves better. This sounds like another cancellation. She should have done the Faith show when it was offered her.
i am only going to watch it for Eliza Dushku
Women love D.B. Sweeney…he’s a bad boy with a heart of gold.
Brain Trust is a bit of a repetitive premise from the company that brought us Leverage. A guy with personal demons who gets paired with msifits who help him resurrect himself personally and professionally? Hello Nate Ford.
I wish Eliza the best of luck, but I do wish she’d try something other than tough girl. Just for once I’d like to see her soft,
DB is a decent dude…hes made alot of great underrated films.Welcome back DB!!!
