EXCLUSIVE: Warner Bros, producer Chris Nolan, and director Zack Snyder have begun to cast a “wide net” to find the next Man of Steel. Insiders tell us the studio is open to creating a star as it reboots the Superman franchise: specifically, that the actor will either be a discovery or on TV but likely someone who isn’t well known yet. And he’ll be in the age range of 28-to-32. The studio expects to look at hundreds of young actors before making a decision. Agents who are readying candidates note that hiring an established series regular might not even be possible. The film will likely begin production around next June, and that shooting schedule could wreak havoc with fall prime time schedules. The studio has to meet that production start date because some of the rights are in jeopardy in 2013.

The Superman search will likely take time to play out, as did the hunt for the new Spider-Man which went to Andrew Garfield. There will be inevitable buzz on actors like Armie Hammer, the strapping 6’5″ actor who played Cameron. And Tyler Winklevoss in The Social Network and who was eyed by the studio to play Batman in a Justice League movie that Mad Max helmer George Miller was poised to direct until the film got scrapped. But Hammer is only 24. The studio could go the TV route with True Blood’s Joe Manganiello, who claimed during a recent movie junket that he’s being considered and is certainly a strapping 34-year old. Or an actor like Ian Somerhalder of The Vampire Diaries, who is turning 32 and listed at 5’9+”.
Warner Bros is producing with Legendary Pictures. Nolan and David S. Goyer hatched the story, and Goyer is honing his script with Snyder. Nolan and his partner Emma Thomas are producing with Charles Roven and Deborah Snyder, while co-financier Legendary Pictures’ Thomas Tull is executive producer.
While the Batman films have been populated by established stars Michael Keaton, Val Kilmer, George Clooney, and now Christian Bale, Superman has always lent itself to discoveries. Christopher Reeve was a find in the Salkind franchise, as was Brandon Routh in the Bryan Singer-directed Superman Returns. (Before Routh got the job, Matt Bomer was eyed seriously by almost-directors McG and Brett Ratner.) Even on the small screen, the original Superman TV series star George Reeves and Smallville’s Tom Welling and Lois & Clark‘s Dean Cain were discoveries. The lone exception we can recall was the time that Tim Burton tried to put together a Superman film with Nicolas Cage, an effort that failed because the budget became so high. And then Josh Hartnett was courted during the Ratner version (that got scrapped when Singer took over), but Hartnett didn’t take the role, even though he stood to potentially make $100 million for three pictures if all had been made. Trust us, the new guy is going to get hired on the cheap.

obvioulst Ian Somerhalder wont be it! I is the lead cahracter in VD
BRANDON ROUTH IS Superman for our generation!! Superman Returns made $200 million dollars domestic and even more around the world, and even more on DVD/Blu-ray! What is going on here? HE IS SUPERMAN. He was perfect in Superman Returns. Why can’t they just plug him into this new story? WE want to see him, please.
OUT OF WORK ACTOR, THY NAME IS BRANDON ROUTH. If you spent as much time taking acting lessons as you do spamming message boards, you would be getting work now.
ok I love Superman and everything he stands for but…Brandon looked too teen-like for Superman. We need a MAN not a teen!
Brandon Routh makes a great villain on Chuck and he is dreamy, but he’s missing a certain “sweetness and light” of spirit that the other great Supes had. The core of playing Supe is actually to be sweet, true blue Clark Kent; that is why Tom Welling’s ruddy cheeked youthfulness and Christopher Reeves goofy mild mannered ways made them wonderful Supes. And when they worked together on Smallville they looked like father and son.
Being Batman means rocking the cowl, but being Superman means owning those black glasses.
WHAT?????????
brandon routh sucked!
superman returns was horrable.. TOM WELLING!!!!!!! ALL THE WAY..
Yaaaa Tom Welling!
I agree Tom Welling is our Superman!!
Tom Wellins is Superman
Yes, why don’t they just cast Tom Welling! He already has a huge fan base with Smallville. He has the look. People already identify him with S logo on his chest. I just seems right! Tom! Get in there and Dee Bo those chumps and show them your the man of steel! Directors/casters give the people what they want! One ruined remake was enough!
Uh Tom Welling doesn’t have a huge fanbase by any stretch of the imagination.
Matt Bomer please.
YESSSSS!!!!!!! I AGREE MAN!!!
What is wrong with you people? Tom Welling is losing his hair and he’s pudgy and he’s not THAT tall .. he’s done an admirable job over the years on Smallville but he’s not a blockbuster-movie Superman – no way.
if its not tom welling i will not watch the movie i have followed him as clark kent threw 10 seasons of smallville even christopher reeve would of agreed seeing he played on many of the smallville eps tell he passed away even he liked tom welling so i must say tome al the way no tom your gonna loose money and fans
Yeah, another face… will be strange :S
For us, along the continents… Tom Welling is our Man of Steel!!!!
Smallville pulled a 1.8 rating/3 share last week. On any other network other than the CW this show would have been put down 8 years ago. The ratings are decent, but Smallville is not and has never been a huge success. A small group watches and that small group watches every week. That translates into ok ratings, but the majority of the world who watch TV and know who Superman is have no idea who Tom Welling is. I watch and enjoy Smallville, but our film version of Superman does not need to be from a little seen TV show.
The Smallville ratings are good for CW, though. If Smallville had been on NBC, it would have production quality that could pull in a 2.8-3.0, easy.
But movie franchises need tens of millions of viewers to be a success. Not even NCIS’ audience is big enough to alone make an NCIS film work.
While I like the Lois & Clark actors from Smallville, I think bringing them on would make difficult the perception of a blockbuster. Although they’re good, their co-stars have always acted like soap opera actors, and the production team.
Tom Welling Will Make The Movie Look Corny & Cheap, Pretty Much Like ‘Smallville’ Is…
Tom Welling will NOT be Superman, why cant people just accept this! This is a big budget 200 million dollar movie and they do not want a TV actor who is on the CW. He is awesome in Smallville but will NEVER be Superman on the big screen. No studio is going to invest that kind of money in Welling. People will just think its an expensive TV movie, lol. They will go with Matt Bomer or Henry Cavill or someone unknown.
Chris, I will type in random caps, so you can understand this. NO studio is going to invest that kind of MONEY in an UNKNOWN either, because that would make LESS SENSE than investing it in a popular TV STAR. And Chris, you’re notion that Warners will pick an OPENLY GAY CABLE STAR? You clearly have NO IDEA WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT.
Are you on crack? $200 million? LOL. Try less than half that. It’ll be lucky to edge out Spider-Man’s $80 million. And all movies are a risk. Unknowns are a huge risk. B-list actors are a risk. TV stars are a risk. Now A-list stars are a risk. The studio wouldn’t be open to gambling on an unknown if they were scared of risk. If they were scared of risk, they would be afraid of superhero movie saturation, which they apparently aren’t. We’ll see how that turns out after Spider-Man, X-Men, Superman, Wolverine, Green Lantern, Green Hornet, Ghost Rider, Batman, Thor, Captain America, and Avengers all hit in the within 2 years.
I agree, Brandon Routh is this generation’s Superman. He should be continuing the role.
Singer’s Supes was so disappointing, and obviously $200 wasn’t enough… if it had made double, then maybe all parties would be back (thankfully none are… and if Luthor is the villian, f-u, Goyer, Nolan and Snyder… even Zod would be bad, Brainiac or someone else…)
I met Brandon Routh. He’s a total gentleman and nice guy. Obama was right he really does look like superman in real life. As for Welling, don’t know him, probably a great guy too but there’s this assistant that goes around telling everyone he’s his cousin that’s just a nasty piece of work.
I hope nobody judges me based on their dealings with my family.
No, we don’t. You loco man, that movie was awful.
Brandon Routh failed to do Supes true justice. He couldn’t make the character believable. With old special effects and cheesier costumes, I’ll watch Christopher Reeves be Supes before i watch the failed attempt that was Superman Returns again.
Superman is a dated hero now just like Spiderman and the Hulk. Meaning they were for an older generation that was pre 9/11. The reason why the new captain america is going to work is because they haven’t forgot where he came from and that is WWII. So they are going for an Indiana Jones route. Also look at the name “superman” isn’t it kind of generic compared to the names Batman, Green Lantern, Wolverine, Punisher, Ironman, and Daredevil. Also the kryptonite weakness has been pushed into the ground. Just leave superman in the old comics. His origin story is boring compared to a Captain America’s story which is based in WWII myth of an Arian Soldier the Hitler tried to reproduce himself.
“Superman is a dated hero now just like Spiderman and the Hulk. Meaning they were for an older generation that was pre 9/11. The reason why the new captain america is going to work is because they haven’t forgot where he came from and that is WWII. ”
…and explain please? why such a contradictory statement? and a hero from WW2 is not “dated”?
all the above superheroes can be reimagined into timeless iconic characters. Smallville shows Supes can be reimagined for a contemporary audience even though it is for the small screen soap opera crowd. Ironman, Daredevil and Batman are very generic names. Daredevil is an old carnie act going back a century.
whatever. cant believe i jump into this.
i just think your argument could have been made clearer.
all the very best.
L
Fanboys have their hobbyhorses. No use arguing with them about it. It won’t penetrate.
Did you see “SUPERMAN RETURNS?” Are you nuts?!!? Granted he wasn’t the only thing that was flawed in that movie, but he cannot act. That wasn’t helped by the script or Kate Bosworth (equally awful!), Kevin Spacey’s scenery chewing, or the ridiculously slow pace of the directing. This film was screwed from start to finish.
If you think earning $200 Million on a $250 Million budget is a success, then you know nothing of making money in the film industry. A $250 Million production budget will also have a $250 Million advertising cost. You think marketing is free??? All in all, Superman Returns is a financial failure. Not a bad movie, but financially a failure. You don’t spend $500 on a movie just to only make $550 Million.
With all that being said, a dramatic reboot is just what the doctor ordered. And years from now you’ll be saying that the one thats being made now is the definitive Superman.
I don’t see why they just don’t use Tom Welling.I mean the series went on for so long mainly because of him.Plus,he is so hottttt!!!
They considered Tom Welling but you have to consider that he is not locked into a new series as executive producer of Hellcats. It would not be practical for them to cast him being the amount of juggling he would have to do with his schedule.
He has said he was approached in the past for playing Superman in the movies but he was still heavy in Smallville at that time.
Hey dumb ass, if Tom Welling can act in an episode of Smallville, direct an episode of Smallville, and be an executive producer of Hellcats in one week, he sure as hell can act in the new movie. Him being an executive director should not even be one the reasons you keep saying why he may not be getting the role. The truth of the matter is he is who America wants to see as Superman on the big screen. I have seen five polls in the last two months about who do you think should the next Superman, and he has won all of the with a large majority.
Actually, “genius,” making your way between two Burbank TV stages when both production offices are on the Warner lot, PLUS you’re the EP of one of the shows and can show up when you feel like it, is HARDLY equivalent to starring in a 7 figure budget tentpole with most likely international locations and several months of preproduction, not to mention an insane amount of publicity and marketing responsibilities after shooting.
Even movie stars don’t get a 25th hour in the day.
Are you kidding? I posted this somewhere else, but it is worth mentioning again. Smallville is not that huge of a show. I watch it and I love it, but the ratings are not huge. The average person (not an internet nerd, like us) has no clue who Tom Welling is.
He’s an idiot. he should take the gig.
If it’s not Tom Welling I’m not going to see it. I bet there are A MILLION other women who feel the same way.
I’M WITH Liza LaBollita 100%! TOM WELLING OR NOTHING!
Well that link didn’t work. Go to facebook and search for “Cast Spencer Conway as Superman”. You won’t regret it. He is a super man. He IS SUPERMAN.
Spencer Conway fits this bill. He is the Man of Steel. Go to Face Book and search: “Cast Spencer Conway as Superman”
tom welling is the only choice as far as i am concerned. nobody else has the christopher reeve like looks, c’mon put him in the movie!!!
TOM WELLING IS SUPERMAN!!!! HE IS THE ONLY THAT CAN DO THE ROLE JUSTICE BESIDES I CAN’T WAIT TO SEE HIM IN THE SUPERMAN COSTUME. HE IS SOOO HOT!!!
Brandon Routh IS Superman for this generation! He did an amazing job in Superman Returns and deserves the role again. I think getting another new actor as Superman after Returns was released not so long ago would be confusing and frankly stupid when they have great talent in Routh. Just my opinion, but I hope Warner Bros. thinks real hard about this one.
The key word is RE-BOOT….Chris Nolan as producer knows what he’s doing. He wants ZERO association to past super man movies. Just like with Batman.
For ex, he used the Joker again – but completely different.
Jack Nicholson was a cool joker, but how many people were thinking after seeing The Dark Knight: “Well, they already had the Joker in a Batman movie.”
Chris Nolan will darken up Superman I bet. There wont be any Jim Carrey wacky Riddlers or Schwarzenegger’s Dr. Freeze.
Will be curious to see who he casts for Supermans villains….and not that there was anything wrong with the Zammmooo! Poooowww! style of Superman. Different viewing experience though.
UMMM HELLO….TOM WELLING SHOULD BE SUPERMAN, HE IS ALREADY IS SUPERMAN HELLOOOOO
No Way, Robbie Amell is the only choice, he’s young, well spoken and the chicks dig him!
WTF at the Ian Somerhalder inclusion. One of these things is not like the others…
Why not Routh again?
He was the only good thing in Superman Returns.
I think he deserves another shot at the cape and tights.
The only good thing in Superman Returns were the opening credits.
The only good thing in Superman Returns was that little kid. I loved when he got an asthma attack after realizing Clark was Superman
Boo.
I disagree, the only good thing in Superman Returns was the CLOSING credits!
Nobody got to see the closing credits having left the theater soon after Superman’s big return scene.
I agree, I think Routh was great for the part. Can’t blame an actor for the script he’s handed. they should give it to him.
Tom Welling isn’t really that bad as a runner up, being that I’ve watched Smallville for so many years. It would be almost like a needed upgrade and continuation from the Smallville storyline.
Honestly, I just get tired of everyone having to reboot a movie a couple years after it’s made. And then go and keep changing the characters.
Everything you said was spot on!
It’s not Routh because he can’t act. Simple as that. In a year he’ll be back to waiting tables.
He really was the only good part of Returns. Marsden did a good job as Lois’ husband, but that character was so stupid it doesn’t really count. It was not Routh’s fault that the movie was terrible, but they probably want to distance themselves from it anyway.
Brandon Routh isn’t really a good actor. He looked like Christopher Reeve but he wasn’t very impressive. If you see his episodes on “Chuck”, you notice his range is very narrow and that he mostly displays one emotion.
His poor acting contributed to a poor movie. And the movie’s Superman acted far more stupidly throughout the whole movie than Lois’ poor husband did.
Lois Lane = MILA KUNIS
Snyder, you can thank me now.
Because he comes across on screen as smug and arrogant. great for bad guys not so much for the ultimate boyscout.
Zach Levi looks more like superman then brandon routh, all he needs is more gym time.
the best person i have seen so far is michael trucco, mostly unknown but with geek cred who is straight kick ass
Also if you want to cast wide, get ask jason segal in for an audition, at least he is a legit 6’4
Jason Segal? Dear Lord, there are no words. Wow.
Jon Hamm really is perfect, even though he’s a little older than they want to go with Supes. The other guys just don’t have the screen presence that he does. I could already buy that he’s Superman even without a cape and an S on his chest. And to answer any doubts, Warner Bros, no I’m not gay. And so no, I do not have a crush on Don Draper.
I agree. He is one of the four actor who would make me genuinely excited about this movie: Jon Hamm, Tom Welling, Henry Cavill, and James Caviezel.
After that, there is a whole pile of “Meh” actors and a bigger pile of “Hell NO!”
Hamm would be good, but he’s a little on the old side for sequels. Caviezel got a lot of buzz last time around, but he’s a little long in the tooth for it too. The story will be huge, because thats where the went wrong the last few times.
Jon Hamm is like Superman’s cool uncle
oh gosh, if caviezal plays superman, then the superman n jesus connections will all come together!
who ever it will be he better be a solid actor..6’4″ or 6’5″ with a tight body..chris reeves took alot of pride in his character by working out all the time on & off the set..
Let me get this straight — he worked on his character by working out? Does that make any sense to anyone?
Yeah, that logic is a little off to me, too. Reeve was a Juilliard-trained actor and I think that’s why he worked so well. Both he and the filmmakers cared enough to combine the acting chops and the physical attributes to the part.
I read the quote about Hammer’s age being too low, but after reading a lot about his casting in “Justice League” and subsequently seeing his acting chops in “The Social Network,” I hope the filmmakers won’t rule him out as a possibility.
I agree…Juilliard is the way to go and Benjamin Walker should be the next one for the role. He obviously has it otherwise he wouldn’t have gotten cast as Beast in the XMEN film
Well, a) that’s not what Stan said– he said Reeve TOOK PRIDE in the character by working out. And b) since looking like Superman and having that iconic bearing is a big part of playing such a famously heroic character, I’d say that yes, maintaining one’s physique is part of “working on the character.”
To be fair to Stan, the look of Superman is an important aspect of the character. Unlike Batman or Iron Man, he doesn’t wear a mask. Nor does he have a bulky costume to hide his physique. He also has to visually convey a sense of strength and conjure up a familiarity with 70 years of comic book drawings. More than most any other superhero, the look of the Superman actor is important.
Jon Hamm. And call it a day. I’m sure AMC could push Mad Men for Hamm. It’s’ bad enough they pushed Breaking Bad, but at least it would be worth it to get some more MM exposure.
You are on crack if you think Jon Hamm looks even a little like Christopher Reeve or could fill his shoes. No way.
You must not be able to read if you think they are still looking for ANOTHER clone of Christopher Reese
OK, why are you all saying that this actor HAS to be a Chris Reeve clone?
If anything choose talent over look.
Jared Padalecki for Clark Kent/ Superman and Morena Baccarin or Adrianne Palicki for Lois Lane.
That would be interesting. Some SUPERNATURAL and SMALLVILLE, haha
Did you not read the post? The shooting schedule rules out anyone committed to a TV show.
I’ll admit, I’m a total comic book geek and subscribe to several Dc titles including superman. That said, I could think of no one better for the role of Superman/Clark Kent/Kal-El than Jon Hamm. Please WB, no more pretty-boy soap actors, Superman has depth to his character!
This will be interesting, for sure.
Loved Routh at the time, he certainly looked the part. Repeat viewings of ‘Returns’ left me a bit wanting, performance-wise. Can hardly blame the man – it was his first feature, and the Superman character himself wasn’t exactly stunningly written. If at all.
I say cast Daniel Craig and ignore what everyone says. That seems to work.
With Superman comes Lex Luthor. Michael Rosenbaum did such a good job as Smallville’s Lex Luthor, I cannot imagine anyone else playing the part.
you mean like those hacks Gene Hackman and Kevin Spacey?
They were awful. Straight up truth. Doesn’t matter what kind of rep anyone has out of the role, if they suck in the role. 99% of the public will tell you Hackman and Spacey were horrible. But they would also admit that is likely because they were written horribly. But Horrible is Horrible and Cyn is right. Rosenbaum was light-years beyond anyone else in the role.
What do you think about Michael Rosenbaum he did a good job in SV
I COMPLETELY agree with Rosenbaum coming back, but I don’t think he would be interested.
AGREED!
This might be out of left field, but if lex is only a small role or a secondary villain then they should cast Eminem. He has good screen presence. and rocks the bald look. comes across as intelligent, and at the very least it would give the movie an academy award winner to work on the soundtrack
you are killing me dude
your are the biggest idiot i have ever encountered.
I don’t know who should be Superman, but Russell Brand
told me that Katy Perry had been approached for Wonder Woman.
(but was probably going to turn it down)
Perfect casting if you ask me!
megan fox for wonder woman
From the first time I watched MAD MEN, I thought that John Hamm was born to play superman.
Just bring back Routh. And before any supporters suggest it, Tom Welling is a horrible “actor”.
Routh is worse than Welling “genius”, why do you think he’s not a star 4 years after failing with SR?
LOL. God that is so true. That some sad fan would champion the Wooden Wonder Routh is hilarious.
Are you aware that Tom Welling was auditioned for and offered the part in Superman Returns (Which he declined because of his commitment to Smallville) before they decided to go with Routh?
No?
I didn’t think so.
dumb ass hmm if he sucks wonder why he has lasted 10 seasons in smallville how many series you know that have lasted that long he has more superman time in then any outher superman ever played
Tom Welling really is the perfect choice.
I agree. He’s been perfect on Smallville. Why not keep him?
Tom Welling or Jon Hamm would both be great.
Please not Ian Somerhalder and Jon Hamm is too old to even be considered.
For god sakes just wait till Smallville is done and cast Tom Welling!!!!!!!!!
Are you kidding?
1) He’s a horrible actor.
2) Why would you want to anchor a big-screen event to a fucking tv show? You want the Nolan Superman to be “Smallville: The Motion Picture”?
As far as tying things to a TV show, ask Star Trek about that. Paramount has been pretty happy so far. Plus, unless the movie is about Clark Kent growing up pre-Superman, then it couldn’t be a Smallville movie, could it? Logic dude. Doesn’t matter who is the star. If it isn’t Clark pre-Supes, it isn’t Smallville.
Smallville and the original Star Trek series are two different franchise establishments. It takes a little stretching to compare them like that. The argument you make doesn’t match the point he was making.
Superman is an iconic character (previous to smallville) while Star Trek became famous because of it’s episodic adventures.
He means that a television show aimed at a heavily teen oriented viewing audience should not be the guide for a major motion picture. The quality should be far superior to a CW show. An attachment to it cheapens the film.
yeap tom has more superman hours in then any outher actor he has it down to a t
I agree with you. I don’t want Tom Welling to be Superman. Instead of Superman, it will become Smallville: The Movie. Plus Tom Welling isn’t that much of a good actor.
It should be Brandon Routh or that Hammer guy.
LOL. Anybody willing to promote Routh really doesn’t have much cause to insult anybody else. I have never seen an actor with as awkward a body language as Routh. The dude can’t even stand naturally, without looking huddled in and cringing. His Superman stood like a whipped poodle.
Not that werewolf dude from True Blood please, he’s a TERRIBLE actor. Worst on the show.
Henry Cavill is absolutely great for Superman.
Henry Cavill is an EXCELLENT suggestion. Very attractive with the height, broad shoulders and strong jaw that the Superman character requires!
He is the embodiment of British aristocracy. Where is the modest farmboy in him?
I totally agree i’ve been pushing for him on other sites, glad u agree maybe we should get a pettition going, and WB Nolan, Synder will listen lol.
Alex Skarsgard for Superman. There, I said it.
Well if it is not going to be Hamm as Superman, then they might as well just go with Armie Hammer.
He is 6’5 and has the right build to bulk up and tone up to look like a visually imposing Superman and can be made to look older than his 24-25 years of age on film.
If Routh is not coming back, then Hammer would be a much better candidate than Joe M thats for sure.
I concur. Those are the only two choices, and one of them isn’t really a possibility.
Where do these spammers come from with all of these posts suggesting actors that are laughable at best??????
This film will be made or broken by the casting of Supes. If it’s not Armie, the franchise is kaput.
Awww not another young metrosexual Superman. Why not an actor in his late 30s or early 40s?
YES! It’s SuperMAN for God sakes. Besides, he’s the oldest of the old-school superheroes. It would make a lot of sense for him to be a bit more mature than the other heroes in the DC movie universe.
Jon Hamm is the best choice I’ve seen so far.
While I am an ENORMOUS Hamm fan and have the biggest crush on him, I think the costume is where he can’t pull it off. Frank Quitely draws my ultimate Superman, a large build that is held almost regally, but if they tossed Hamm’s frame into a tight material with a cape it wouldn’t look pleasant. Which is sad, because he is the perfect Clark Kent.
Jared Padalecki? Hell, no.
Tom Welling is Superman. It’s hard to envision anyone else when Tom is so perfect. Just like it was hard to envision anyone else after Christopher Reeve.
What about Henry Cavill? He’s an English actor with 2011 looking like it might be his year w/ Tarsem’s ‘The Immortals’ and ‘The Cold Light Of Day’ with Sigourney Weaver + Bruce Willis..
Also seems that he’s, essentially, 007-in-waiting.
Cavill really is the perfect choice. Very talented, and he certainly has the look. Plus he’s British, and a trained actor, which will definitely appeal to Christopher Nolan.
Why would being British be a plus? Are you nuts?
Christopher Reve did say he thought the episode with him on SV back in Season 4 i think it was, he viewed as passing the Superman torch to Tom
He also read the script for Superman IV: Quest for Peace and thought it would make a great movie. No offense to the late Christopher Reeve — he was a nice guy and talented actor, but I wouldn’t put the future of a billion dollar film franchise in the hands of a mediocre TV actor based on his opinion alone.
