EXCLUSIVE: Warner Bros, producer Chris Nolan, and director Zack Snyder have begun to cast a “wide net” to find the next Man of Steel. Insiders tell us the studio is open to creating a star as it reboots the Superman franchise: specifically, that the actor will either be a discovery or on TV but likely someone who isn’t well known yet. And he’ll be in the age range of 28-to-32. The studio expects to look at hundreds of young actors before making a decision. Agents who are readying candidates note that hiring an established series regular might not even be possible. The film will likely begin production around next June, and that shooting schedule could wreak havoc with fall prime time schedules. The studio has to meet that production start date because some of the rights are in jeopardy in 2013.

The Superman search will likely take time to play out, as did the hunt for the new Spider-Man which went to Andrew Garfield. There will be inevitable buzz on actors like Armie Hammer, the strapping 6’5″ actor who played Cameron. And Tyler Winklevoss in The Social Network and who was eyed by the studio to play Batman in a Justice League movie that Mad Max helmer George Miller was poised to direct until the film got scrapped. But Hammer is only 24. The studio could go the TV route with True Blood’s Joe Manganiello, who claimed during a recent movie junket that he’s being considered and is certainly a strapping 34-year old. Or an actor like Ian Somerhalder of The Vampire Diaries, who is turning 32 and listed at 5’9+”.
Warner Bros is producing with Legendary Pictures. Nolan and David S. Goyer hatched the story, and Goyer is honing his script with Snyder. Nolan and his partner Emma Thomas are producing with Charles Roven and Deborah Snyder, while co-financier Legendary Pictures’ Thomas Tull is executive producer.
While the Batman films have been populated by established stars Michael Keaton, Val Kilmer, George Clooney, and now Christian Bale, Superman has always lent itself to discoveries. Christopher Reeve was a find in the Salkind franchise, as was Brandon Routh in the Bryan Singer-directed Superman Returns. (Before Routh got the job, Matt Bomer was eyed seriously by almost-directors McG and Brett Ratner.) Even on the small screen, the original Superman TV series star George Reeves and Smallville’s Tom Welling and Lois & Clark‘s Dean Cain were discoveries. The lone exception we can recall was the time that Tim Burton tried to put together a Superman film with Nicolas Cage, an effort that failed because the budget became so high. And then Josh Hartnett was courted during the Ratner version (that got scrapped when Singer took over), but Hartnett didn’t take the role, even though he stood to potentially make $100 million for three pictures if all had been made. Trust us, the new guy is going to get hired on the cheap.

DONALD GLOVER FOR SUPERMAN
Yes.
Second.
Wesley French is an unknown but would be a cool choice. Canadian actor.
Nice try Wesley. I don’t think they’d cast an aboriginal actor as Superman. He is hot though.
I say give Ryan McPartlin (Captain Awesome from “Chuck”) another shot. he supposedly auditioned twice for the Singer version. He’s 6’3″ and 35 years old. The guy is built like a statue, has an amazing deep voice, and is able to do action, comedy and drama.
That… would be an awful idea. He’s terrible.
good idea
Ryan would be SUPER AWESOME! (Seriously, I think he would be great in the role if his locks are dyed black.)
Armie Hammer.
Seriously, watch the indie “Billy: The Early Years”! It’s about the early life of Billy Graham and he did an awesome job even though the script wasn’t excellent… I watched and thought “I know he’ll be a star.”
Jon Hamm even said on Conan that he is too old to play the role
to be honest hamm does’nt seem to interested in the role
I know a lot of people will be interested, but truly if it was my client up for the role, I’d be cautious. Has anyone’s career ever thrived being Superman?
Bud Collyer.
No. Superman is the destroyer of careers. The image of the stupid panties never goes away. The fans have no loyalty to the actor, only the character. Add up all the fans who say they love Chris Reeve. Now ask why 1/10th of that number never showed up and supported Reeve in any other movie. But, they love Reeve so much, that no actor will ever measure up to him. The new actor is doomed to failure in the face of that nostalgic love.
Every fan professing to love, or at least tolerate, Routh has not spent one penny on any film Routh has been in over the last four years. Part of the reason Routh doesn’t get work is because his work doesn’t make anybody money. Most of it is direct to DVD. It doesn’t make money because not even a tiny fraction of Superman fans will support him with their dollars. They’ll say nice things about him as Superman, but they won’t support Routh in any other roles. The same thing happened to George Reeves and Christopher Reeve himself. The same will be true of the next actor. These fans have no loyalty to the actor outside of the role. But they are also very demanding fans. Anything less than perfection is harshly punished.
Their vendetta can last years and years. They have never forgiven Dean Cain, and after nearly 20 years still stir up message boards and never let anyone forget how much they hate him. They destroyed Singer’s reputation. It is a shattered shell of what it once was. If Snyder doesn’t deliver the best Superman film ever, they’ll destroy him too. They are tireless. They never forget and they never forgive. And if you do manage to win their love, they won’t pay a cent to see any non-Superman movie you make.
Tom Welling. He has been Clark Kent for 10 years and since this is Smallville’s final season no scheduling issues. There is no one better.
I think you’ve forgotten Henry Cavill and, in fact, have some of your “almost cast by McG” facts wrong.
Henry had the part and had even tried on the in-work costume for McG’s Superman before it went down.
I dont see why he shouldn’t be as strong as a contender as he was before.
I don’t care as long as they get a Lois Lane who can act this time, and has some “balls”. Margot Kidder had them…Kate Bosworth was a wimp. Lois is a damn in your face journalist. A smart career woman in a time when they were rare.
Margot Kidder’s Lois was more like an unattractive post-feminist reporter.
I always conceived Lois to be a Howard Hawks-type, in-your-face-but not-that-annoying career gal.
I hated Margot Kidder’s Lois Lane. I like strong women, but she was just a b/tch. Bosworth somehow managed to come off even worse.
Tom Welling is a wonderful actor, is perfect for the role, and will be finished with Smallville by June. I can’t imagine anyone else in the role but him. Other suggestions are simply laughable.
He will be done with SV but he is the producer of Hellcats now so probably still a schedule conflict.
I thought Brandon Routh was perfect and I don’t understand why they won’t bring him back. Not only did he look great but he had a little of the awkward geeky sweetness that Christopher Reeve brought to the role and serves as a counterbalance to the chiseled abs and cleft chin.
Routh was a snore.
Another vote for bring Routh back. He deserves another shot and is well-liked by fans of the character.
As one of those fans you speak of – and I know I’m not alone – Routh was anything but liked in the role. Hated is too strong a word for a jobbing actor merely doing his best, but in Routh’s case, his best is just not good enough.
He was dreadful, wooden, charmless, dull and too effete.
Oh I know he has his fans (who I can only assume have never read the comic), but don’t try to speak for all of us as if we are of one voice. We are most certainly not. The very best thing you can say about Routh as a choice is that he would certainly be controversial and would potentially put a lot of people off the movie before it even starts due to the association with the abomination that was Superman Returns.
As for Welling… Superboy maybe. Superman? Yeah, right. Good joke.
It’s not an easy casting to make, but surely – SURELY – in all the world there must be better choices than these two. Nice as they may be, Supermen they’re not.
So much agreement here. Well said.
Speak for yourself, bub. This lifelong Supes fan isn’t interested in ever seeing Routh on screen again. The franchise needs a fresh start and someone new to wear the cape.
Agreed … Routh deserves the role.
Tom Welling is the best choice.
Justin Timberlake…no brainer.
justin timberlake as superman. best joke of the day!
boy can’t act.
hell lets just make the new superman president obama ……lmao tom welling all the way
Justin Timberlake? Best joke of the day.
Boy can’t act
RICK MALAMBRI FOR SUPERMAN
I SOOOOOO AGREE!!!!!! Rick should definitely be superman!
TOTALLY AGREE!
NO ONE COULD DO IT ANY BETTER NOW THAN RICK MALAMBRI!
RICK MALAMBRI FOR SUPES!
Jared Padalecki, Mark Salling, Kellan Lutz, Matt Lanter, Matt Bomer; I love Hamm but he and Joe M are bit too old – especially with how young the new Spider Man is. I’m vibing it’ll be an unknown.
Matt Bomer is TINY. Are you crazy? He is marginally better than the rest of the meatheads you list, but at least they aren’t TINY.
Don’t be ridiculous, he’s not ‘tiny’, he’s a shade under 6 foot. He may not be big enough to play this role, sure. But then he’s got serious talent and doesn’t need this on his resume anyway.
Bomer’s 6’0 and he can gain weight. It’s not that hard.
Why does Superman have to be as young as Spider Man? Isn’t Spider Man supposed to be a kid fresh out of school? Isn’t it boring for all superheroes to be roughly the same age? The Superman character was created almost thirty years before Spider Man. Wouldn’t it make sense to portray him as more mature — being part of an older generation of heroes?
I still think that Tom Welling is the perfect choice =D
brendan hines from “lie to me”….
The key is to cast CLARK KENT, not Superman. That’s why Reeves was so good, and Routh so terrible.
They should target and screentest Henry Cavill and Armie Hammer and no one else….that’s it!
E
They should target and screentest Henry Cavill and Armie Hammer and no one else…that’s it! Especially IF Hamm is going to be considered too old.
End this ridiculousness which is the Superman casting process before it gets out of control like it always does.
Armie Hammer! Clap! Clap! Clap! Clap! Clap!
I’m 6’5″, 220 and I’m made of STEEL.
Armie Hammer. Superman is 25 in year one. Armie is 25 when MOS is shooting. He also has the look, height and chops. Which other choice has Oscar buzz?
Oh and BTW, Welling *shudder* will be busy with Hellcats. Good. Best place for him.
NewsFlash:
Tom Welling is a TERRIBLE actor!
He won’t be cast in a Nolan produced film!
You are just flat out wrong.
Tom Welling is a good actor who has developed into a really amazing actor as the series has progressed. Plus, he’s easy on the eyes. Good humor, and he’s been playing Clark Kent (not Superman) for years. Best choice.
once again if tom welling is so terrible why has he been in every episode of sv and why has sv lasted 10 seasons i think your just lame and maybe you need to sit down and watch all the first 200 episodes of smallville you will be apoligizing realy fast
Why? Because 90% of American television sucks and illiterate morons like you will watch any piece of crap on a TV screen if it contains young, attractive actors. Smallville is nothing more than glorified fan fiction for the Gossip Girl crowd, and has about as much relevance to authentic Superman mythology as an episode of Mighty Mouse.
You may not understand all this, but fortunately, Christopher Nolan does. That’s why Tom Welling won’t be anywhere near this project.
Yes Christopher Nolan is impressed by fanboy rage. Which is why Heath Leger was never the Joker. … Oh wait. No. No. I meant to say, “which is why Batman wore a cloth costume and not another rubber suit.” … Oh wait. No. No. It’ll come to me. Give me time. I’m sure there is bountiful evidence of Nolan giving a crap about fanboy rages.
Tom Welling is actually a great actor. Admitedly, he was new to the craft 10 years ago, but even then, he had a great ability to convey transparency and depth in the character. He has skillfully shown the character’s muturing, from age 14 to 24. He’s grown from a caring, trusting, conflicted, loyal teen riddled with aignst and insecurity to a gritty, confident, deeply compassionate, highly complex man fiercely grounded in justice. His acting is really transparent and shows his complexities and challenges throughout the years.
To discount his acting because he’s on a show percieved to be targeted to teens is narrow-minded. Have you really taken time to watch the show? It’s full of deep undercurrents and philisophical challenges. His acting (and that of Michael Rosenbaum and John Glover) is what brings that to life. Every person I know who’s watched the show, young or old, male or female, has found the show compelling and drawn to the Clark that Tom Welling has developed.
A movie with Tom Welling as Superman is the only one I will go to see
i wont watch it if tom is not clark kent /superman
I love it when people say that about a movie. Liars. You will both see it and Tom Welling will not be in it.
