EXCLUSIVE: Her song In the Deep from the movie Crash earned her an Oscar nomination. Now songwriter-actress Bird York is writing In Deep, a drama pilot script for Fox. The project, which York is executive producing with Gary Randall, is described as a Sopranos meets Desperate Housewives. It centers around a female undercover FBI agent infiltrating the Chicago Mob with the help of the made men’s women. 20th Century Fox TV is producing the untitled drama, which has received a script commitment. York, a recent alumna of the WGA Showrunners program, is repped by Gersh and Code Entertainment.
TV Editor Nellie Andreeva - tip her here.

Sounds cool, one of the most original ideas I’ve heard in awhile, which is a relief to me as a writer. She’s very talented, too.
there was a Melissa Milano (spelling?) Lifetime movie with a similar idea. Also a CBS tv movie. Not sure how original it is.
Being developed at FOX is the kiss of death.
Xenu connections.
Bird is a great talent and a wonderful person. Love the idea. Hope they take good care of her and don’t let it get screwed up.
Can someone (anyone) explain to me how a songwriter/actress a) gets a script commitment from any network. And even more preposterously—gets into the WGA Showrunners Program? I know a number of very qualified writer/producers who were turned down for this “prestigious” program. And for what? Her? Weird!
I’m sure the fact that’s a stunning woman had nothing to do with it. Just like the writer who was plucked out nowhere to reboot Buffy. A stunning blond. Some people get attention for reasons other than their skills or experience.
Couldn’t agree more. This is odd.
How did she get into the WGA program? Has she been a hard working staff writer, or toiling as a writer’s assistant for years while while paying off a $250k education?
Seriously, how did this happen? If anybody knows, please chime in.
She wrote several original scripts, all of which received rave reviews from executives, 3 of which were bought from major studios. She was also hired to write 2 separate scripts on existing ideas for major studios on the merits of her writing. This, plus her 20 years of experience as a serious actress gave her the perspective that made her an interesting candidate for the showrunner’s program, and this recent idea is one of many that this multi talented artist has been working on.
She is most deserving of this opportunity, and the fact that it is not your typical success story makes it even better.
a script commitment? why these days is someone selling a script news for Nikki Finke? sadly this site has become all about development announcements and not even big ones. oh well.
How is this not important? Is casting more important? Or whatever meaningless switch of execs at the Studio?
Well, that sounds horrible.
Negative people suck.
Here’s the thing: maybe not you, but people here on DHD consistently mock and deride anything and everything new as “tired”, “already been done”, “this will suck”, “so-and-so is a crappy actor/actress”, “that writer is a hack”, “why can’t Hollywood come up with new ideas”, etc. And when something new does come along, from a fresh (and likely talented) voice, you just couldn’t wait to come in here and give your “thumbs down”. Does it make you proud of yourself to be the first negative commenter? Maybe you need to take a look in the mirror and decide how talented you are, “working actor #274″, hmm? How’s that original idea of yours coming along? What’s that? Nobody will answer your calls? Awwww… *sniff-sniff*
I’m sure every casting person wants to hire someone as negative as you to be part of their project. And if/when you get a call to audition for this “horrible” show, will you go? Yeah. You’ll go – and you’ll be doing cartwheels in your living room for it.
Anyway, the description of the show sounds awful. “Sopranos meets Desperate Housewives.” Horrendous.
Was that better, Sunshine?
I’m not sure you really addressed most of Gary’s rant. So you think the log line sounds awful? That should be news to whom? I think he kind of pegged you.
Her song “In The Deep”
Her show “In Deep”
Well, something’s deep, anyway. Let’s hope it’s the script.
original idea? are you joking? if i see anymore fbi agent crap on tv my eyes are gonna fall out.
the networks can only seem to do doctors, cops and lawyers. can’t anyone come up with a new story engine?
This woman has an intense amount of talent that have been destroyed by years of sitting on her ass trying to please the boss in a writers room. Very few people emerge with unique and original voices from a writers room. The sad fact is most rooms are made up of untalented writers who are hired to make the boss laugh and write a script that makes it easy for him to rewrite you. Please someone write a response of all the brilliant writers rooms and great female voices in TV they launched. It is more likely voices they killed.
There are a handful of great writers room but working in that female bashing environment is hardly the way to get your own show on the air.
And you guys know it.
Don’t know the lady or her work but she damn sure ain’t bad to look at.
good for her. getting things set up is hard. good for her that she is working the system. and for those of you who don’t know, york (kathleen) has been one of the best actresses working in hollywood over the last twenty years. it just did not make her famous.
Nope. Definitely no Xenu connections.
Yay Bird! Not news to some, but I’m glad she got her own headline. And thanks Lili for defending her so succinctly. Obviously, we’re biased, but it’s not hard to be – Kathleen is a remarkable PERSON not just a “stunning woman”. I shudder to think what that guy’d have said if she was ugly or overweight. I have no idea if her show is good or not, but knowing her it probably is (she’s a perfectionist). I can say that she’s a very good person, and she would probably push to hire any talented writer, even one who was screaming “But you haven’t paid your dues yet so you must be a slut!!!” on this board.
Bird, stop posting on your own thread. Seriously. It makes you look small, and you can’t even disguise that you’re all over the comments.
wow – unbelievable how many angry and bitter people there are in this town. what does a person have to do to receive accolades from the despondents? honestly – jealously and envy are very unattractive qualities.
aside from being an amazing person, bird is a consummate professional who’s been paying her dues since the mid 80′s. all she’s doing is parlaying her talent into another arena. isn’t that as fellow creatives what we all want from our own careers? constantly be ascending to the next level? don’t be so quick to judge. give her a break and let her work speak for itself before casting the first stone. good job bird and best of luck
!
Great, we need another GORGEOUS FBI agent. If there is nothing I HATE more is gorgeous women cops, lawyers, doctors, FBI agents, CIA agents all look about 20 yrs old. So unreal it ruins the whole experience for me.
