UPDATED WITH FINAL NUMBERS: Fox News towered over the competition — cable and broadcast — with its midterm election coverage last night. According to Nielsen, Fox News averaged 7 million viewers in primetime, up 128% from the network’s previous midterm election coverage in 2006 and more than doubling the audiences of CNN (2.4 million) and MSNBC (2 million). In the 25-54 demo, Fox News drew 2.4 million viewers vs. 1 million for CNN and 669,000 for MSNBC. Fox News’ viewership peaked with 7.2 million viewers between 9-10 PM, compared to CNN and MSNBC’s peak audiences of 2.6 million and 2 million, respectively, from 10-11 PM. During the 10 PM hour, Fox News also beat the three broadcast networks as it averaged 6.9 million viewers vs. 5.9 million for ABC’s election coverage, 6 million for CBS’s and 6.1 million for NBC’s. For its entire marathon coverage from 6 PM to 3 AM, Fox News averaged 5.3 million viewers, beating CNN (1.8 million) and MSNBC (1.5 million) combined. It was a big night for Fox News’ core conservative audience as the Republican Party took control of the House and made significant gains in the Senate.

That’s no surprise. I was watching Fox too, mostly for the smart and sexy Megyn Kelly. But I did occasionally flip to MSNBC… their constant freakouts over the results were HILARIOUS
What a douche. You’re a typical FOX “News” viewer because the newsmodels are hot. You stay classy there, Fabrizio.
There were no “freakouts” of any kind on MSNBC. In fact, I thought all 5 commenters from the main desk were very conversational with each other, and with their own incisive points of view. There were no freakouts because there were no surprises. Happiness that the creepy Sharron Angle was beaten by Harry Reid perhaps, but pretty much everyone is happy about that.
Hey Gary, you stay classy with more of those “douche” comments.
Gary A:
The five morons on MSNBC were whining and complaining every time a Republican won another race. And no: most people are NOT HAPPY that Prince Harry was re-elected. His and Princess Pelosi’s arrogant pushing through of the job killing, debt rising, and unconstitutional Obamacare is why the Republicans won in droves last night and will allow them to win in droves again in 2012, which will allow Obamacare to be repealed in 2013! Wake up!
Gary, you’re everything and more with your “douche” commments. Just like the monotone liberal coverage from msnbc, you don’t like anyone else thinking differently from you. Stalin would be so proud of you Gary.
“…anyone else thinking…” would be a great start.
Come on man! There are plenty of failed socialist states you can move too without making ours one of them. Go live it if you love it.
Speaking of douchebags — Gary A — you are a hoot. The MSNBC coverage was representative of the thuggish and sophomoric punditry that is usually imposed upon Fox News by democratic “thinkers” like yourself. Put your hands back over your ears you wuss.
Fox News actually did have the best product last night (out of the cable channels). CNN had the best experts but their production was kind of a mess. The set was cluttered and the handheld cameras weren’t a good call. MSNBC was embarrassing; they were just mad and snarky. Laurence O’Donnell was out of control.
The MSNBC coverage was hilarious, but totally off-the-rails partisan and unprofessional. The panel was laughing openly at Republican guests and talking points, and Chris Matthews asked Michele Bachmann if she had been hypnotized. O’Donnell was pale and shaking and seemed on the verge of tears; he came off like Niles Crane discovering Daphne Moon was shacking up with his dad. It was a hell of a spectacle but not calculated to enlarge the MSNBC audience.
Our cable system has never bothered to carry MSNBC. I don’t think anybody has noticed or cared except me. And I care because I don’t want that moronic waste of bandwidth polluting my HDTV, so I care in a good way.
I actually like watching the opposition sometimes so I watched MSNBC for a while.
I kept getting up to check my speakers and clean my TV screen, then I realized all the growling and spitting was coming from the other side of the screen!
According to TV By The Numbers, Fox News gets the largest viewers share during the 2010 midterm elections in USA, with a total of 7 million viewers. Meanwhile, CNN grabbed the second spot with 2.4 million, and MSNBC landed third with 1.9 million.
Unsurprisingly, the site described the data, which also showed that among adults 25-54, Fox News got 2.4 million against CNN’s 1 million.
All numbers are for primetime, 8PM to 11 PM, time when the votes were tallied.
God I hate Republicans…..stupid, facists, racists, ignorants
Yeah, you’re clearly the level-headed one…
There goes another tolerant liberal….
No, there goes another leftist. Liberals try to find the good in everyone, even the retarded republicans out there who are so easily manipulated into voting against their own interests. Personally, I’m a left wing democrat, which means I feel no need to pretend tolerance when it comes to shitheads and power hungry vultures such as those who have been pulling the strings for the GOP these many years. I call them the way I see them. Thank God I live in California.
It’s good to live in California? Out of money… overrun by immigrants… home of Hollywood, where power hungry vultures abound. Oh, wait… you’re an L.A. power hungry vulture, and thus feel entitled to look down your nose at people that are struggling, aren’t you?
If you hate CA so much why are you reading “Deadline Hollywood.” Have you ever been to Hollywood? Who are the power hungry vultures you speak of?
And “overrun by immigrants?” Our country is a country of immigrants, genius. If you meant illegal aliens then put down that strawberry in your hand because your only contributing to the problem.
Don’t get the hollywood haters hanging out on this site. Seriously, don’t you have something better to do than troll around on a *hollywood* industry site?
Yep, I live in a liberal, wealthy enclave, and I can smell the ocean. I work hard, I make great money, I pay a crapload in taxes, and I don’t complain about it. I don’t look down on people who are struggling, when I can, I extend a hand. I do, however, look down on ignorant, fear driven retards. Have a nice Winter.
NO, obviously you don’t live in CA. A lot what he/she said is true. I live in SoCal and part of industry.
As far as immigrants… he/she means illegal. If you want to come in this country do it the legal way…pay your fee, learn and speak English and integrate into community. Don’t segregate yourself from other races.
Re; Fox…. racist, fire starters of lies and hypothetical ideas and dummy enablers.
And your problem with immigrants? My family “immigrated” here in the 1700′s and this country was built by immigrants from all over the world. It sounds like you have a problem with specific kind of immigrants, namely Hispanics. And if you are speaking about illegal immigrants, 40% of illegal immigrants are “white”, which includes 500,000 Irish citizens in the Boston and NYC areas. Or do they get pass because their skin is light enough?
Thanks gobacktosleep, at least you’re an honest leftist that admits his own hatered of others that don’t think like you do. I the old days, they’d call you a bigot, but Joe Stalin would be proud of you. See you in hell.
Go on… Tell us how you really feel!!! I love seeing 12 year olds at their finest. And your party supposed to be the level headed, “we know better”, more mature and sophisticated ones. I bet you couldn’t even last a week on the boarder with the rest of us. How do I know? Because you actually need to have self-reliance and heart to survive without handouts, all the while knowing how to protect your family from an invasion of Mexican military crossing over as guard dogs for drug runners.
Lol….I actually wrote this out of boredom cause its a slow day here….but I love seeing all the responses….dance puppets, dance
I think you mean “borders,” as in “them mexican gangsters is crossin’ our borders WITH GUNS THEY BOUGHT IN ARIZONA”.
Hey Bill Maher, you don’t have to use an alias here. We know it’s you.
So what’s new? Fox just dominates the game lately.
Only Dummies watch other stations
only dummies watch one station and follow blindly
Indeed. I love that nonsense that some people spew out. “I am proud of the fact that I get my news from the same biased outlet everyday”. Good for you.
Our Chinese masters are quite pleased.
So 5 million teabaggers want to watch the network where the inmates run the asylum. Is anyone surprised? They want unadulterated propaganda by the shovelful. What else when you have no ideas?
Time to slide back further into the ditch, so much for what’s left of the middle class.
No, so much for anti-American traitors like you!!!!!! You know, I meet your kind in the street all the time – talk a bunch of smack anonymously but get scared and run away when confronted in public. Come to AZ and talk like that in the streets and see how far you get when you get taken to the boarder and try to stop illegal aliens from crossing my land that I worked hard to develop.
I’ll bet you can’t wait to read AWOL coward GW Bush’s latest. Enjoy — you can get a copy at…[ahem]…”Boarders.”
You lose all credibility…ALL…when you use the word “teabaggers.” That shows who the ignorant propagandists truly are.
Buh bye now. Have fun when you lose again in 2012 now that the grown-ups are back in charge.
So….2% of the population of the US is some kind of media slam dunk? I’m sure their coverage brought in all kinds of new viewers…
You can say that about any show, newspaper, book, play, website, etc, and it’s pointless to do so. The audience is fractured in a thousand little pieces.
Have I developed a new hearing problem? I kept hearing a weird drum beat whenever I clicked to CNN. boom-boom, boom-boom
Yes, thank God you live in California. Just don’t ask the rest of us to pay for your socialist train wreck-of-a-state economy. Who needs the San Andreas to shudder you off into the deep end, you’re doing a great job yourselves.
And what state do you live in that is rated below CA in world financial economy?
Cause anyone who has a brain knows CA has been in the top 10 in the world economy. That’s above other countries… I didn’t say states. I said countries.
Now what state do you live in? (rhetorical)
Typical liberals hearing one thing and spewing off another. CA’s economy being one of the 10 biggest in the world speaks nothing of its stability or sound policy. Do you even live in CA? Have you seen our debt?
Actually, California is a donor state and despite all of our current economic and budgetary problems nearly 20% of our federal tax payments go to the many states who receive more than they pay in.
it’s quite funny left wing Libs are so blatantly ignorant and nasty, like “it’s ok i’m a liberal and for the people, my vile speech is acceptable” They really do love the smell of their own flatulence.
Left wing “libs”? What is it with YOU right-wing crypto-fascists and your fascination with all things liberal? You do realize that the founding fathers were extraordinary LIBERALS, engineering a Constitution from the likes of John Locke (liberal)? I always wondered what these Reaganite/crypto-fascist types thought of that fact? The founders and their influences sure as fuck weren’t conservatives for their time. The ideas they had at the time were considered to be way out there and what you would call “vile speech”.
While you’re at it, learn to fucking spell and construct a sentence with a capital and period. I always tend to notice right-wingers find this difficult. No surprise, I suppose, considering educated people with degrees tend to trend more liberal. If you DO in fact have a degree, I would ask for your money back immediately.
Oh JohnDoe, we “right-wing crypto-fascists” are just fascinated by the hate that spews from a “let’s all love one another” arrogant, elitist left-wing nut like you. It amazes me how everything YOU expouse is exactly what the founding fathers would think, which is absolute rubbish.
BTW, seeing how you are a fan of Joe Stalin, do you think you Liberals should just hang Conservatives or shuffle them off to gulags in the California desert? Look into your black heart and tell us JohnDoe, just tell us.
Republicans? Democrats? Tea party? who cares who wins. Lobbyists are the ones who control Washington.
Exactly. All the Tea Party candidates that were voted in yesterday will get flooded with lobbyist cash and vote for their corporate masters, just like the rest of them. Watch how quickly their so-called values get tossed out the window for a fat campaign contribution.
Yes, the neocons and ignorant tea baggers like to all get their news in the same damn place (it tells them what they want to hear, how they want to hear it). The rest of us (you know, the critical thinkers who don’t want to elect a government that will establish a theocracy and take us all back to the dark ages) prefer to get our news from a variety of different sources. I got the election results online so I wouldn’t have to hear the bullshit analysis that goes with it on the TV.
The difference between Fox and MSNBC were stark. Name calling and bitterness on MSNBC as opposed to legitimate analysis on Fox. It’s amazing that MSNBC still doesn’t get it.
Where was this “name-calling”, Sparky? Matthews went a little off target saying that Michelle Bachman was “hypnotized” (which isn’t name-calling). But other than that, who called anybody names? What “bitterness”? Any examples? Did you actually watch the MSNBC program that you so despise, or are you just re-flatulating what some other ignorant person told you? Some FOX-lover, perhaps?
People like you are sheep. You think that being told what you want to hear makes it factual because it supports your [narrow-minded and politically-groomed] beliefs. You don’t do your own research. You refuse to listen to all sides of an issue before making your uninformed judgments. You believe that your political leaders aren’t lying to you (not to mention your info-tainment leaders – Palin, Beck, Limbaugh, O’Reilly, all of FOX…) even when they are proven time and time again as lying, dishonest and intentionally misleading. You keep going back to that trough.
You don’t want to see or know the truth because in the inimitable words of Aaron Sorkin via Jack Nicholson, “You can’t handle the truth.” And that truth is more important that looking at pretty people telling you what you want to hear.
Gary, I’m not sure what you were watching but MSNBC’s coverage seemed closer to Real Time with Bill Maher than actual journalism. They were laughing at the Republicans they had on, consistently making snarky or sarcastic comments about the right, and they were beyond testy a number of times (O’Donnell about Rand Paul, Maddow about Bayh, Matthews with Cantor, etc.) It was, at best, partisan but it came off to me as completely unprofessional.
Worst of all, I thought they did a disservice to the liberal point of view and actually helped make the Republicans look good. Rush Limbaugh pointed to Eric Cantor’s interview with Chris Matthews as a How To on getting interviewed on TV (which it was). Matthews even set up Michelle Bachman so that she was able to get off a zinger. Maybe you liked it but, personally, I was embarrassed.
(Also, as a suggestion, you might not want to follow “Where was this name calling?” with name calling. Just seems like a bad strategy to me.)
What about Olberman immediately questioning the speaker-elect’s sincerity in his emotional speech? That seemed like some quality journalism coming from a respected news source…oh..wait…
Olbermann wasn’t questioning Boehner’s sincerity (although O’Donnell jumped in to defend the Speaker-Elect as if Keith was picking on him).
Olbermann said that Boehner once said he cried at supermarket ribbon cutting; he stated that to underscore that Boehner was an emotional guy and that the crying was in his character and not some crocodile tears for the camera.
(And the good feelings for Fox were quickly undone by O’Reilly claiming that he couldn’t understanding why Boxer got re-elected because everyone knows that Democrats have ruined the state of California… which ignores the political realities in Cali which make it hard to balance the budget and also the obvious fact that the Governor who has really run it into the ground was Ah-Nuld, a Republican.)
I had a group of friends over last night, both Democrat and Republican. We were switching between the network as well as cable broadcasts all night. We all agreed that Fox had the best overall coverage and CNN made much improvement in balancing its analysis. However, MSNBC was embarrassingly unprofessional and partisan. The ridicule and laughter was the most unprofessional any of us had ever witnessed on a national or local news program. At one point Lawrence O’Donnell could be seen lowering his head in reaction to the antics of Olbermann, Matthews and Maddow. He even seemed a bit confrontational with them after Boehner’s speech. I predict some of these faces will disappear from MSNBC soon. The new owners have to be apalled, MSNBC tarnishes the once respected NBC News brand.
You’re right. There was absolutely nothing wrong with FOX’s coverage on 2008′s elections. They were completely fair and balanced about Democrats gaining complete control. Isn’t it funny how they were professional and balanced about the elections last night, then? Hmm.
The ultimate in Maddow’s and Ubermoron’s sophomoric rantings were when they started commenting on Boehnher’s emotional speech on being named Speaker of the House. A totally human moment in which they were still so rage-filled that they couldn’t shut down the politics for one second. It was pathetic – and even the other two on the panel seemed embarrassed by their incapacity to give the guy the sincerity of his moment. They are both left-crazed robots. I would think they would get tiresome to anyone other than the most strident, hate-spewing leftists.
How in the world did MSNBC think it was a good idea to have Olbermann and Matthews anchor their election coverage? You don’t see Hannity and Beck anchoring Fox News’ coverage. Stupid.
Wow, the comments here from both sides demonstrate exactly what’s wrong with political discourse in this country. Didn’t anyone pay attention to jon Stewart last weekend?
I watched mainly FOX News, but I switched to MSNBC every once in awhile to see if Keith Olbermann would shove a gun into his mouth. Is Maddow a “shemale”?
The whole bunch at MSNBC is a joke. A big joke. They talk, point out, and ridicule republicans (not democrats) for being partisan when both parties are. They are a bunch of hipocrits. Whiners and cry babies. And dishonest. Joe Scarborough is the only guy who is honest and truthful. Bottom line.
Wow, are you all actually arguing about what corporate news channel is the best?
They’re all the same! They’re all bias. They’re all sensationalist. And they’re all bought, owned, paid for, and controlled by gigantic media corporations! They report on only what they want to report on to get the highest ratings. I never understood the extreme distaste that Liberals have for Fox News since CNN and MSLGBT are the same as it is.
Fox News is the most entertaining of the corporate news channels, though. Bill O’Reilly is so amusing (I like how stern he acts over ridiculously unimportant, minute occurrences). Sean Hannity’s whiney pipsqueak voice is laughable. Greta Van Susteren’s mouth is incredibly captivating. And Glenn Beck is just hysterical. Oh, and did I mention that Skeletor – I mean Anne Coulter – sometimes makes a guest appearance on this channel?
Meanwhile, on MSLSD, Keith Olbermann is convulsing over something that Bill O’Reilly said or did, and Rachel Maddow is pretending to be a 20-year-old boy.
Msnbc represents the political left audience, Fox represents the political right audience, of which I include myself. Most Reps know this fact, however, most Libs do not. Why? Because they don’t understand there is a two-party system in this country and cannot grasp the fact that others should have opinions different than their own.
To be fair, there is a left and right political fringe that both feel this way. Most of the critical thinking centrists realize that different media outlets represent different opinions. Those on the fringe swallow what they are told, believe it without any thought or research whatsoever and repeat it. I myself read and watched several news outlets, including Fox and CNN. MSNBC is not a serious news organization and I certainly wouldn’t waste my time watching it with something as important as an election going on.
Interesting. My sympathies are more on the left, and believe me I am quite aware (along with everyone else I know) that MSNBC has tried to mimic Fox’s success on the right by becoming the left leaning cable “news” network. Both of them are biased and not objective news sources, in my view. Funny though that MSNBC’s tagline “lean forward” suggests their bias, while Fox’s “fair and balanced” clearly does not.
Like you, I get my information from many sources (and actually MSNBC is not one of them). But from what I have seen personally, Fox really does misrepresent actual facts on a regular basis and polls of their audience have shown that a significant number of them end up misinformed on actual objective facts compared to the general population.
Just my two cents.
Not surprised Msnbc pulled up in the rear. They put out a very sad team on there panel. There bias was very evident and they acted like children who could not get there way. It’s not surprising that the main team on NBC Brian Williams Ect would not cross over to the Cable channel. They wanted nothing to with Msnbc shabby team.
I watched msnbc almost the entire time on tues and while I enjoy some of their banter, there is no mistake that comments made were very sarcastic and condescending. I think Lawrence Odonnell is still ranting about the debt ceiling. Rachel Madcow trying her best to say republicans took a huge hit cuz Harry Reid won was laughable ( note to Rachel ” the Democrats took a beating!”) and Chris Matthews interview Michelle Bachman was as disrespectful as not having one republican point of view on any panel till after 2am.
Looking forward to global warming wiping the east and left coast from the map. Fairly useless inhabitants.
And Big Momma’s House 2 was the #1 movie in America one week…Just because people watch it, does not mean it’s good…
MSNBC was so very biased, in favor of the Democrats, on election night that it was pathetic to watch. Chris Matthews and his return of the blame game to the Bush Administration clearly showed that he too does not get it. FOX was more fairly based in their reporting, and it was the Republican’s night.
