Talk about a dream pairing for film and TV sci-fi/comic book fans: Guillermo del Toro, the mastermind behind Pan’s Labyrinth and the Hellboy movie franchise, and Battlestar Galactica executive producer David Eick are finalizing a deal to create the new TV series version of The Hulk for ABC, which is being produced by Marvel TV and ABC Studios. It will mark Marvel’s first series project for ABC and ABC Studios since Disney’s acquisition of Marvel last year and the launch of Marvel’s TV division in June. It also marks del Toro’s first TV project. Details of the premise are sketchy but I hear that the series will follow an origin story. In it, physicist Bruce Banner, whose alter ego is the green and raging Hulk, will be in his mid-twenties, less reactive and more energized as the world is still his oyster. Unlike the two Hulk movies, in which the monster was a pure CGI creation, the series will employ a mixture of prosthetics, puppetry and CGI. Del Toro and Eick will break the story for the pilot script together, sharing story and created by credit. Eick will write the script, with del Toro attached to direct subject to his availability.
Del Toro will also oversee the designing of the Hulk character, which is expected to draw on previous comic book incarnations, as well as the original 1978-82 Incredible Hulk TV series, with a few wild tweaks on the old look. Because the project is still in its nascent stage and will require a lot of prep work, it won’t be ready for next fall consideration. I hear that Marvel is looking to launch the series following the July 2012 release of The Avengers, which features the Hulk character, so the series will probably be targeted for fall 2012. Del Toro and Eick are executive producing the project with Del Toro’s manager/producing partner Gary Ungar of Exile, Marvel TV topper Jeph Loeb and Marvel Entertainment’s chief creative officer Joe Quesada. “I have always been attracted at the combination of comic book heroics and monsters, Jack Kirby’s Demon or Kamandi or DC’s Deadman or Marvel’s Dr. Strange, Morbius, Metamorpho, Mike Mignola’s Hellboy, etc,” Del Toro said. He said that The Hulk has been at the top of his list and he first pursued it as a feature film around the time of the 2002 release of Blade II, which he directed. Del Toro added that, with partner Eick “we coalesced a respectful but powerful way of retelling the Banner/Hulk story in a fresh way.”
Marvel TV identified The Hulk as a property they wanted to pursue for a TV series in the summer and, along with ABC Studios, launched a search for a writer to pen the adaptation. Eick, who is under a blind script deal at ABC Studios, floated the idea of a Hulk series to Del Toro, whom he has known for awhile. Separately, ABC Studios had been chasing del Toro ever since Patrick Moran landed at the studio as head of drama in July. As a drama development executive at 20th TV, Moran signed del Toro to his only previous TV deal, a first-look pact at the studio. Shortly after their original conversation, WME-repped Eick and del Toro met and began discussing a Hulk series. Then, they pitched their idea simultaneously to ABC, ABC Studios and Marvel TV, and the pitch was very well received across-the-board.
Eick, creator/executive producer of Battlestar Galactica’s Blood & Chrome spinoff that was recently picked up to pilot at Syfy, has been involved in several series that re-imagened popular properties/characters, including Battlestar Galactica, Bionic Woman and Hercules: The Legendary Journeys. “I’ve enjoyed the challenging, rewarding process of revisiting beloved characters,” he said. Eick called The Hulk “one of the crown jewels of the Marvel world for generations” ans said it was a “dream opportunity to join one of my all-time filmmaking heroes, Guillermo del Toro, in a faithful but unique retelling of the primal, emotionally-rich tale of one of my all-time comic book.”

Fuck Yes!
Guillermo del Toro uses more scream mad georgeish turn in his work than others in a day and age where everything is turning digital and computerized he brings something a little more tangible i can already with his past work envision what the Hulk might by like or what we could expect and completely get blown away with his abstract imagination, Guillermo del Toro has an chance to create a series to entertain the Hulk fans and even non-comic book readers alike
It’s embarrassing to the Hollywood Creative Community and to the general population of America that “The Hulk” is even discussed
to be brought back in any form of entertainment, whatsoever.
How does one sit at a conference table and not pee down his or her leg when this idea is brought up? Do the attendees stare at their shoes and bite their lips so they dont laugh out loud in hysterics-they grin and bare it for the check. Well have fun-something I will never see. Btd
green with envy
David Eick will do the same thing he did on BIONIC WOMAN. That statement speaks for itself. As someone on that show, I’d never repeat the experience of toiling under him.
Hey there Mike, I was curious about this, what was your role and why did he come off so horribly?
It will suck even more than the movies and that’s saying a lot.
I wonder if all the accolades will somehow translate to profit. There were so many brands, and names in this piece I lost count. Seems like someone is trying really hard to convine everyone else this is a great idea. I’m not so sure.
The considerable disconnect between the rest of society and Hollywood continues. The original Hulk series worked, and the second movie worked, but seriously… a “created by” credit should be reserved for people who actually, oh I don’t know, CREATE something.

RE: PULLING YOUR HEAD OUT
Dude.
Would you please stop setting up new projects and start making one? It was fair for you to you to renege on your HOBBIT deal since the project had money problems. But now you’re cutting too much bait. Why aren’t you at least in pre-production right now? You’ve taken so much time that THE HOBBIT is already put back together, which means you dropped out for no reason at all.
Hurry. The F. UP!
And why haven’t you picked KILLING ON CARNIVAL ROW back up? The script is ready to shoot, it’s a franchise, and it’s better than every single one of the other things you’ve set up–it’s one of the best spec scripts of the last decade. Why aren’t you at least producing it, and getting it back on track?
You’re doing a HULK TV show before, or instead of, KILLING ON CARNIVAL ROW…?
You’re doing a HULK TV show before, or instead of, HATER, the terrific David Moody novel you set up two years ago…?
Dude.
Will you please pull your head out, make better decisions about the quality and number of projects you develop, and start shooting something? We need you.
You know, you’re bitching about Del Toro DOING something is moot. The man might make great films, but he’s still at the mercy of the people WHO FUND THEM. He stated at the Scott Pilgrim Q&A 2 weeks ago that he hasn’t gotten the green light on At The Mountains of Madness, that WITH JAMES F’N CAMERON backing him. If that doesn’t tell you the state of trying to get a damn project off the ground, then I don’t know what does.
We all look for heroes and need them more now than ever. If ever there was a time for a show that shoves a huge hulk of enthusiasm into our fear-laden current existence, it is now! I can’t wait!
I’m green with envy that this was not my idea!
We all know that everything has already been done since the dawn of time, it is the way it is presented that matters and with these two involved, I’d say, it’ll rock. Can’t wait to see, best of luck!
Somebody’s really, really invested in The Hulk taking off as a character. HE’S JUST NOT THAT INTERESTING. We had the late ’70s version and two big screen versions, not counting the animated outings. Three different actors in six years. Out of all the Marvel characters, Hulk gets the most at-bats. Spidey I can see, he’s essentially Marvel’s Superman but the Hulk, come on.
Eick continues to squander his BSG currency… Caprica? Boring. Bionic Woman? Beyond awful… so he dregs up THE HULK… Marvel’s least impressive hero. If they had the balls to do the Peter David Mr. Fix-It Grey Hulk with brains that might, MIGHT, be interesting… but that’s too much of a divergence from what the public thinks they remember about Hulk, considering most people don’t read that book.
I don’t see why Marvel doesn’t do a DAREDEVIL TV show, much more suited to the small screen than the big screen. Or they could try their hands at THE DEFENDERS, since they’re getting behind characters that are only marginally interesting.
Let’s be honest…
At the 11th hour Del Toro is gonna “pull out” of directing duties and be a name-only producer. Next.
WOW
Good job Messrs Loeb et al. The buzz on this might shake apart the internet.
It’s because of shitty ideas like this that cat videos on youTube get so much more views than network TV.
David Eick has not creative vision at all. Guillermo del toro has no knowledge of tv at all. anyone who thinks this is a recipe for a hit show is WRONG. Paul Lee, this is not how you want to start your tenure.
I doubt this was Paul Lee’s idea, remember Bob Iger runs Disney, he bought Marvel for a reason, to integrate it into Disney, and that means ALL of Disney Marvel merchandise at Disney Stores, Marvel games, Marvel Television shows. Disney is a master at integration; even if the show is marginal in ratings, think about an infomercial each and every week, while advertisers PAY to advertise on your infomercial.
Disney will have that 4 billion they paid for Marvel back in no time at all. Two more shows are in the works for ABC and ABCFamily.
This is pure Disney.
New take on Hulk: He’s just a poor, misunderstood scientist, upset at the loss of a woman and then crazy hijinx ensue. Holy cow. How many times are they going to revisit this character before they realize everytime it fails because the idea of a mindless, slightly evil Hero isn’t one that we really want.. I mean, the 1970s series, sure there is that.. But they do realize that was redone with very little script changes (outside of the fact that HULK was turned into an ANGEL in “Highway to Heaven”) So, here you go, here’s the solution: Hulk is now a self-loathing scientist so hurt by the both evil and yet redemptive acts that he does as an out of control super-hero that he spends the rest of his time working on only being near cars he can quickly crush – but he also must always be near the new, 2011 (Vehicle of Show) because it’s built so tough, and it stands up to him, allowing people to flee him in it. Either that, or people who escape him must be using Windows Phone 7 and have time to show you how to “Bing It” before they can get away, part of the secret to HULKs success… he only crushes GOOGLE devices.
Guillermo del Toro and Ron Moore would be tremendously exciting. But… David Eick? He’s not a writer, much less a “creator”, and not someone people enjoy working for or with. Urgh.
And… The Hulk? Seriously? Another one? Again? Why? What about something new, fresh and more interesting like Doctor Strange or Cloak and Dagger or anything else that hasn’t been done to death already for frak’s sake?
Sorry, but it’s hard to get excited about this, esp. two years in advance. (And as a religiously devoted fan, I’d pay real money to see Guillermo actually make a movie instead of endlessly taunting us with more project announcements. Mercy.)
In all the world of storytelling, this is what you choose?
Time is man’s most valuable commodity. It cannot be replaced and one never knows how much one has.
With that understanding, how can you waste your time on this?
REALLY???? After 2 bad movies they want a go at TV now? It was a cheesy bad TV show already! Sort of shocking, don’t get it at all.
Yet another rehashing of another tired character being rehashed for the millionth time! Can’t wait!
Give it a chance lol, obviously the hulk is very special to marvel and they wanna try to start from scratch to rebuild the true honest story of this character. I hated ang lee’s version of the hulk,he was a fan of the 70′s tv show maybe, but ang lee is nooo comic fan like me. It totally wasnt the origin story @ all and the hulk got clowed in hollywood! Hulk is never ass naked,Cmon Man lol! I liked ed norton’s a lil better but still couldnt get a hold on the story. But im willing to anticipate what’s gonna happen with this character,i’m a die hard hulk fan! God Bless! CBW
What could possibly go wrong?
Hulk no want TV show. Hulk old want rest now. Hulk say dead horse no like be beat.
Here’s why the Hulk keeps getting “at bats”… And why he’s infinitely more interesting than Spidey… his power is tied to an emotion… And he resents his power. Inner conflict equals good storytelling. Unfortunately people keep fucking it up, fortunately the bar is set very low so all Del Toro has to do is not fuck it up. That’s my big note… Don’t fuck up.
Eick & Guillermo Del Toro is a thrilling combination. If everyone can give them some creative breath, they might just come up with something sensational.
I love the nerd rage here. “How dare Marvel make a show about a well known character, that even had a popular TV show once! No, instead do a show about characters the public has never heard of and doesn’t give a crap about!” Nerds. Got to love em.
David Eick is a creative black hole and, simply put, a talentless dirt bag. Del Toro will eventually figure it out. So will ABC.
Guillermo Del Toro sure is a busy guy. How many projects has he lined up by now?
