Rogue has released a new trailer for the Nicolas Cage-starrer Season of the Witch. In the Dominic Sena-directed film, Cage plays a 14th Century knight charged with transporting a suspected witch whose powers are suspected to have caused the Black Plague. Nice visuals, but is it a good Cage film or one of those he does for the payday? Pic opens January 7.

Uups, looks like a Hallmark movie. Can’t identify anything “hot” in there.
“Let’s finish this!…” “Get in line behind ME.”… “We’re gonna need more holy water.” cliché (DEFINITION): A cliché or cliche (pronounced UK: /?kli??e?/, US: /kl???e?/) is an expression, idea, or element of an artistic work which has been overused to the point of losing its original meaning or effect, “played out”, rendering it a stereotype, especially when at some earlier time it was considered meaningful or novel.
… i have a bad feeling about this …
Too true about the holy water line. Totally pinched from “Jaws” IMO (“we’re gonna need a bigger boat”). This movie will blow Saladin’s wang until the next Crusades – the one where the Knights Templar will try and pilfer Nic Cage’s SAG card.
The holy water line is not in Bragi Schut’s 2004 draft….
Well, if Relativity are opening it on January 6th they must have really high hopes for it. Either that, or they know something about release dates that no one else does.
zing! too true.
Does no one else remember that a different trailer for this first played in front of Saw VI in October 2009? Lionsgate was going to release in March of 2010 as part of their distribution deal with Relativity. It was pulled something like 6 weeks before the release date and was tracking horribly.
Yeeeesh! Did I just throw upna little in my throat?
The greatest evil may be the film itself. UGH!
Nic Cage doing a spot-on impersonation of Kevin Costner *sans accent* from Robin Hood Prince of Thieves!
When did Nic Cage become the modern day John Wayne? Apart from different haircuts, absolutely nothing changes in the look and demeanour of the man from role to role, regardless of the time period, genre, etc. It’s so bizarre to think that back in the 80s and early 90s, Cage was THE indie-transformational actor of his generation. Then, by the end of the 90s, he got a taste of the action movie money and hasn’t looked back since (except for Adaptation perhaps). Sad.
Go back and watch his “critically acclaimed” films (like Leaving Las Vegas) and I think you’ll find his acting was no better/no worse than in any of the crap he is in today.
Only the screenplays were better, his performance(s)sucked even then.
The verdict is Pay Day
“we’re going to need more Holy Water”, I think Scheider should sure (we’re going to need a bigger boat)
Nothing special here, but it could be mildly entertaining if you go in with low expectations. If they’re going to make this kind of movie, I think the leading man should be someone with sex appeal, and not someone like Nic Cage (whom no one really wants to see anyway.)
Didn’t I see a trailer for this on a Blu-Ray 3 years ago?
To everyone crapping on this; it does look rather corny, but the script was actually a Nicholl winner from a couple years back. I’d give a chance.
This is true. It’s a very well-written script. There are lots of factors that go into a movie turning out well or not turning out well. Movies are precarious in their creation, they can rise or topple with each step of the process, so hopefully, Sena got it right.
Agreed. The script was pretty decent, but then…Nic Cage.
Looks like they’re trying to sell it as something bigger than it is by splicing in the quick flashbacks to the lead’s days fighting the Crusades as if they’re a larger part of what’s actually an intimate, contained and creepy story. Hope it’s not as mishandled as it looks.
I thought this script was fantastically mediocre. Nothing interesting about it, zero tension, just completely vanilla.
I have hated the last bunch of Cage movies, but this one looks like it could be good. Perlman is very underrated. “We’re going to need more holy water” is a terrible rip-off, though.
I was brought on to WHITEOUT after Sena was unofficially fired from the project. His cut was atrocious, cliched, uninspired and showed an utter lack of craftsmanship. It took three other directors and an amazing editor to try and salvage it…and it still stunk. I have no idea how this guy continues to work.
Don’t mean to contradict anything you just said, but I would point out that the script for “Whiteout” was also absolutely terrible.
The script was one helluva hot mess to begin with. The trailer looks better than that pile of spilled ink. Sucked is a nice word for that horrible screenplay.
But Sena sucks. Fired from Whiteout, Fired from Gone in 60 Seconds, locked out of editing on Swordfish…. who exactly is he sleeping with to get work?
there ‘aint nothing hot about that trailer. hot mess maybe…
I saw a trailer for this when I saw The Crazies and you know what they usually say about movies postponed for a long time. Enter at your own risk.
The script was great. Who knows how many changes it went through tho…
Wow, I read the script by Bragi Shutt when I was an ICM agent trainee back in 2003! The script was great, but his movie looks lousy.
Payday! Payday! Payday!
Yikes–talk about miscasting. Come on–does Nicolas Cage look remotely convincing in any period earlier than the 1920′s? And as the center of a dark fantasy film…um, no. Just no.
And when the trailer titles are better (and more evocative) that what you hear of the movie itself, that’s never a good sign.
