Focus Features has released a trailer for The Eagle, the Kevin Macdonald-directed historical drama that stars Channing Tatum as a Roman leader who heads off into the wilds of Scotland to discover what happened to his father, who vanished along with the legion he commanded. Jamie Bell plays the slave who accompanies him. The film opens February 25, 2011.

Wow, a Channing Tatum movie that looks not only good but awesome. BRING THE GLORY OF ROME BACK TO THE BIG SCREEN!
Agreed. Looks pretty good. Like the master/slave switcheroo
Looks good. I’m in more for Jamie Bell than Channing Tatum though.
In the book this is based on, Marcus frees Esca BEFORE asking him to go across the wall with him and they are held together by friendship. Nor is Marcus ever asked to pose as Esca’s slave; he travels as a “healer” and dispenses salves for blindness. But depend on modern filmmakers to think that friendship and adventure isn’t enough to hang a film on – and also to turn Picts into Mohicans.
What junk!
another stupid war movie but with tights and a bunch of 10th string actors… can you say bomb.
Who cares that they’re going to save this eagle. It looks dumb. Like Jamie Bell, but Channing looks drab as usual.
Looks line another stupid movie…what a waste of money.
That’s great…another trailer that gives away major plot points. GREAT marketing strategy! Someone give these people a raise! Who knows…they might actually make an EFFORT.
The attempts by actors like Tatum to affect odd and entirely inconsistent “accents” for period pieces leaves me utterly stupefied. Why oh why do they do this?
“Yoo ah still moi slave!”
Hilarious.
Is it a problem that I’m instinctively siding with the Picts?
In the end, the Picts won. The Romans left and their crumbling wall is a humble reminder of how a modern and technologically-advanced military failed to defeat a blue-painted opponent armed with sharpened sticks and stone weapons.
You clearly know nothing about the northern Britons of this era and certainly nothing of archeology. It’s probably the fault of Hollywood, that would rather portray “barbarians” as knowing nothing of metallurgy or cloth-weaving, but the Romans’ opponents were actually very skilled with weapons and metals, did beautiful jewelry, and certainly did not fight with sharpened sticks and stones.
By the way, since no one has mentioned it, this film is based on Rosemary Sutcliff’s classic “Eagle of the Ninth” and if it follows the book, should be more than just another fight movie.
I think I just saw the whole movie in that trailer. And I didn’t like what I saw. Not even Jamie Bell as a slave boy can get my butt in that theater.
No thanks…been there, done that.
I’ve read the book the film is based on and no, the trailer does not give away the entire plot, the story is much more complex.
As far as casting, I can’t comment on that but I do look forward to seeing the film.
Glad to hear someone else has read the book. It would be fantastic if they manage to capture some of the book’s essence with its strong friendship and more subtle clash of cultures.
Oh come on people. It’s an allegory. The civilized Romans (guess who that represents) against the barbaric, backward and tribal Picts (The Scots). Some crazy Roman dude goes looking for his father and the symbol of his great civilized nation….an Eagle. What he finds is a culture and people who are not as barbaric as the propaganda back home suggests, but they are pissed off that some foreign army is encroaching on their ancestral territory. Yeah we’ve seen it before…but we’ve learned nothing.
Is it me or does this movie look and feel a lot like GLADIATOR?
Channing Tatum in an historical epic? This has to be some of the worst casting I have seen in a while. Hollywood just keeps getting sillier and sillier.
Good trailer. The film looks interesting. Once I saw Channing’s name the first thing I wondered was how he would handle the Roman accent. Too bad he didn’t change his voice. I wonder if he tried but the producer/director decided against ala Tom Cruise in Valkyrie. It could have been a nice change of pace for his career. Instead he’s that same guy from all those dance movies.
Uhhh what exactly DOES a “Roman accent” sound like anyway?
Judging by the movies, when native Roman speakers talk to other native Roman speakers, apparently it sounds part Irish/British/Amish/Pirate…
Channing Tatum can’t act period. This is like a an episode of Rome with terrible acting. We also had Centurion come out with almost exactly the same type of story line. Lamo! ‘Nuff said!
Looks like the sequel to CENTURION.
sorry to say that this looks really dumb. and channing looks ridiculous.
Terrible casting. Looks like a sure box office bomb.
This looks like CEnturion.
Hopefully Tatum can be as good as Fassbender was in Centurion, he was badass in that.
Not impressed with Tatum but it looks like a good story to me. I’ll have to get the book now.
Guess I don’t have to see the movie now. Just saw everything in the trailer.
Gladiator light, but at lease ashton kutcher isn’t in it
Wrong casting. Channing Tatum’s face is too modern for this period film.
How does this guy (Tatum) keep getting work? boggles the mind THIS GUY CAN’T ACT. boggles the mind.
