CBS Films has just released a trailer for The Mechanic, the drama that stars Jason Statham as a killer who takes on an apprentice, played by the excellent young actor Ben Foster. Charles Bronson and Jan-Michael Vincent starred in the 1972 original. The pic will be released January 28, 2011.

The bad news, of course, is that this is a CBS Film.
The good news is that it appears to be a perfect Jason project, and for those who enjoy his films…this could be fun.
Well yeah — that’s why they ended up with borderline B-listers. If it was Warners or Fox this would be Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling.
I think most people (action fans and most other movie fans alike)would prefer Jason Statham and whoever the young punk is to Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling.
They may be B-listers, but I would see a Jason Statham movie before I see a Russell Crowe or Ryan Gosling one. He looks good without a shirt, and sh*t will get blown up. Sometimes that’s all a moviegoer needs. He’s a sure bet, in other words.
I’m actually excited that Ben Foster’s in it though – he can act and might elevate this beyond a “better piece of crap” to a decent movie.
CBS films didn’t make The Mechanic it was a pick up. Nikki covered the news.
I like this trailer.
Tom, someday you’ll be promoted beyond assistant but until then why don’t you leave the slamming of an entire studio to the grown ups.
This is a solid trailer.
Wow, so somebody obviously had a Hitman Cliche Recycling contest, and CBS films won!
Is it going to “get personal?” Check!
Does someone have to “finish the job?” Check!
Will Badass Hitman have to kill the person who usually tells him who to killl? Check!
Put on sunglasses while walking away from an explosion? Check!
Tell us all about the hitman code? Check and double check!
Foster is an interesting actor, terrific in “3:10 to Yuma,” it’s a shame to see him in something so shopworn and stale.
I think at the end of your comment you forgot to put “check point.” I don’t think anyone has a move to voice their opinion on the film. dead on!
you nailed it!
Drama, it’s an action film lol,
read the script. should be a pretty good flick with the principle cast. love jason statham but still not convinced that he can open nor carry a blockbuster. he is an amazing sidekick in the action films he is in but we will just have to see.
can’t wait to see Statham and especially Sutherland!!
Wonder when Ben Foster will not be considered a young actor? It’s been over a decade since Liberty Heights.. I don’t think young needs to be in front of his job description any longer
Agreed. Eventually they may have to attach the words “Oscar Nominee” to his name as he is one of the best (seemingly unknown) actors around these days. He has more acting chops in his hair follicles than the likes of Channing Tatum, Chase Crawford, and all these “pretty boy actors” have combined.
They should have called this The Carpenter because the acting is wooden…
Saw the original as a kid. Not a big fan of remakes but it’s been long enough and besides all films recycle familiar themes. Some themes more than others.
They already did this film when it was called “Henry Portrait of a Serial Killer”, then again when they called it “Mr. Brooks”.
This actually looks kick ass.
How many times can Jason Statham make the same movie??
This looks incredibly cliched to the point of parody. Seems to suggest it has none of the character or existential irony of the first film.
Ben Foster is not an excellent actor. Absolutely no reason to remake this picture.
Action fans are gonna make this Jason’s biggest movie. He’s primes us and this looks great.
Don’t know what the Ben Foster criticism is about.
He’s the real deal.
I like Jason Statham, I just simply adore how he acts well in an action movie and do the stunt. I will definitely like to see this movie next year.
oh great another movie with ben foster playing ben foster in a movie with the horrible ben foster. He has ruined so many movies by being the same in everything. At least I can scratch this one off the list to see.
Love Jason! he can make anything good!
Boy, it’ll be tough to top the Bronson thriller. Sure the special effects will be great, and the sound will be spectacular, but Bronson was Bronson and it was a role made for him.
This film made the rounds a little while ago. It wasn’t very good but has marketable elements. Lionsgate who is always in the Statham business must’ve passed if it got all the way down to CBS.
They’re remaking /that/??
Good grief, I remember the original – in fact, I still have it on VHS – a portion of the era (70′s) where everything that Bronson did had some attention paid to it.
I wonder what they’re going to dig out of the boneyard next?
There has only been one really good film with this theme in recent years – when Léon trained his young apprentice Mathilda in “The Professional”. I certainly don’t expect this remake to match that film, or the original.
I don’t understand the hate. this looks like another good popcorn flick.
It will be great to see Jason as the lead in this action flick instead of on the sidelines.I saw the original awhile back, can’t wait to see how the remake turns out.
I saw a “world premiere” over 3 months ago at the theater inside Northridge, CA mall. Glad I got free tickets. Talked to some of the audience when it was over. Most agreed with me and didn’t like it either. It was scheduled for release in early Oct., 2010; as noted by a headstone of a person who died in the movie. Won’t give the name of the person that died. Maybe it got bad reviews at this screening and others; that’s why they pushed the release to late Jan 2011; so they could “clean it up”. From what I saw, it will appeal to the male audience 16-25 yrs old.
If Leon survived the ending of the Professional, this would certainly be his sequel.
