It was widely expected but, since the weekly numbers for the broadcast late-night shows are not released until the following Thursday, Conan O’Brien’s weekly victory did not become official until today. For his first week on TBS, Conan drew a 1.6 rating among adults 18-49 vs. a 0.9 for Letterman and Leno, who were tied for a second straight week. Leno also tied the demo performance of The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien the same week last year. In his current second week, Conan has been averaging a 1.0-1.1 demo rating, so he will probably once again top his broadcast rivals for the weekly victory.

Go, Coco!
Not surprised at all. His overall numbers may not be as good as the network guys, but that’s to be expected being on cable. The demo win, however, is what’s going to make the difference and be the reason he’ll be sticking around for a long time to come. Younger viewers are obviously loyal to Conan and have followed him to TBS.
The writing is on the wall for Stewart and Colbert. It is the age of Coco.
It’s a good show. Soundgarden is back and they did the show, so that’s a good sign.
It’s not as good as his old 12:35 show on NBC. It’s not wacky as it was, not as good. Neither are Jay or Dave. But what is good as it was?
Oh yeah, Soundgarden.
Actually, I find this show as funny as, if not funnier than his old 12:35am NBC Late Show.
Conan on his TBS show is very loose and very raw with his comedy.
I haven’t seen Conan so relaxed for many years, going back to the days he worked on The Simpsons.
Actually, I find his new show as funny as, if not funnier than his old 12:35am late show on NBC.
Conan seems very loose and very raw on his new show. Guests on the show also seem more loose and more honest than most shows, including Conan’s old show. Notice he never shows movie clips anymore relating to any new films guests might be starring in.
I haven’t seen Conan this relaxed in many years, going back to his days working on The Simpsons.
Shocking.
The show’s been great. Welcome back Coco!!
You rock, Conan! It’d be even more impressive if you didn’t beat 2 old, over-the-hill dudes like Leno and Letterman. But how sweet it must feel to kick Leno’s ass.
God, to beat shows on CBS and NBC from a cable network?! That is huge. Fire the chin, NBC, and young America will start checking out your network again. Till then, no dice.
Agreed. I’m so sick of “the chin”. It’s amazing that he continues to be on the air this long. He must have a lot of industry connections in order to keep doing this despite mediocre ratings among younger viewers.
Three unfunny rich old men fighting for ratings crumbs and beating a once classic format to death. Way to go, boys.
I’m glad to see this. NBC and Leno screwed Conan. His show had surpassed Leno’s even when he was in his late late show spot. I hope the viewers stick with him. Conan’s abilities showed through when he had to deal with an intoxicated Harrison Ford.
Commenters on this article are full of age discrimination and bias against experienced and better talented than the restricted and limited Conan O’Brien.
All persons regardless of age have a civil right to work and have Constitutionally guaranteed rights to employmwnt. Maybe perhaps certain age groups choose to not believe those rights.
are you kidding me?? a right to employment?? what country – or rather – universe are you living in? if someone sucks, wtf should they be on tv? hey, you know what? I changed my mind – you’re right, and I’d like to enforce my right to have my own tv show. LindaT, give me money and a time-slot right now!
If we have a constitutional right to employment, how come so many employers fire people at will, and without cause? You don’t know what you’re talking about!
Many people in the 18-49 age group relate better to Conan now because we’ve experienced mistreatment at work, unfair firings, and people in power trying to back out of their agreements.
There is no company loyalty anymore toward employees. They can you when they feel like it. It’s not like the good, decent work culture from the 1950s forward we heard about from our parents and grandparents.
How come so many baby boomers are reluctant to move on or retire from jobs so the rest of us can have a chance?
There is little job security anymore, and the younger generations know this and have to deal with it daily.
Jay Leno gave up that job and took a risk at a 10 PM time slot. When his show failed to impress his bosses, he should have done the decent thing and moved on. What if Johnny Carson had wanted his job back only seven months after Jay took over? Would Jay have liked that? No! But Johnny Carson had class and dignity, and we can’t even imagine him being that selfish. Jay’s ratings weren’t the best when he started, either. They did an ad campaign “America’s standing up for Jay” to encourage people to watch.
Age discrimination? Right to employment? Are you the chin’s lawyer or agent or something?
You’re just asking for argument if you’re implying Leno is better talented, or has more range than Conan.
The big story here isn’t Conan. Though these numbers are pretty good for TBS. The big story here is Leno and Letterman, These ratings are historic lows. And don’t tell me that all TV is down –Kimmel just posted one of his best weeks ever…Jon stewart has been beating Leno and Letterman regularly; Nightline has been doing great.
Leno and Letterman are late night Brett Favre’s, only he’s still got most of his ability.
I don’t know what it will take for the networks to see just how uncool it is for people under 45 to watch Jay or Dave…and let’s face it, the young viewers that Jay does have, we all know they’re not the kids who got As and Bs and rode to school on the big bus.
Letterman is a legend, so I can understand why he still has a job.
The chin on the other hand, for years I have wondered why he still has a job.
The average age of his show is something like 31. He ain’t goin’ anywhere with numbers like that (anybody who thinks he’s failing is an idiot), especially since Dave/Jay have average ages approaching 60.
This is news? Seriously? For years, we hear that Dave and Jay have audiences that are, for the most part, in their fifties, and we’re supposed to be surprised that they didn’t outperform Conan in a demo that is capped at 49?
Hell yeah you’re supposed to be surprised. The major networks have a HUGE advantage luring viewers. I didn’t even know what channel TBS was on my TV until 2 weeks ago. For anything on TBS to beat a major network show is a BIG deal, and an upset. This is like a junior college team beating the Lakers.
“This is like a junior college team beating the Lakers”
Are you serious? This isn’t anything like a junior college team beating the Lakers because if such a game were to occur the junior college team would have to outscore the lakers to win.Conan didn’t beat Leno or Letterman in total viewers, just in a particular demographic which Leno and Letterman never got strong viewership from in the first place. This is not surprising or news. It’s like being shocked that a sprinter loss a marathon to a experienced long runner.
And as for Lorraine Lamour comment of Johnny Carson having class and dignity, thanks for the laugh.
Jay Leno KEPT The Tonight Show Number ONE for year after year after year and after year. He is still Number ONE overall. Jay Leno NEVER gave anything up. It was NBC management decision and Jay Leno is a dedicated and loyal employee and has never had problems with ratings. Conan will do fine on basic cable and has his age restricted following for the most part. Jay Leno still prevails.
Leno’s following is a lot more age restricted than Conan’s. Leno’s audience averages around the age of 60 and has no hope of getting any younger.
Old audience means less ad money.
Tokyo Sandblaster to all Leno fans. Don’t laugh, its Conan Humor.
