After month-long negotiations, Juila Louis-Dreyfus has closed a deal to star in HBO’s comedy pilot Veep, from British comedian, writer and director Armando Iannucci. The Seinfeld alumna will play the central character, former Senator Selina Meyer who becomes Vice President. Iannucci co-wrote and will direct the pilot as well as executive produce with Chris Godsick and Frank Rich. Louis-Dreyfus, who most recently starred on the CBS comedy The New Adventures of Old Christine, will serve as a producer.
TV Editor Nellie Andreeva - tip her here.

Now that she will be on HBO, Julia can finally use the word ‘Fuck’ like she wanted to when she was pitching projects with Larry David on Curb Season 2.
Love Julia, so happy for her…Funniest woman on the planet.
I worked with her yesterday on the set for VEEP. She is a GREAT person and very down to earth. It was a pleasure working with her.
Finally a good project for her.
Old Christine was a weak show, with great supporting characters.
Thank GOD! An actual, viable TV star with the bona fides to carry a show as hilariously as I know she will. Pity CBS that they canned her, now she can shout “fuck” the live long day.
this creative comedic pairing (and the idea) has me drooling.
Now this – this could be really good. Everything crossed.
Ugh. ANOTHER Julia Louis Dreyfus show? Okay, she was on one of the best sitcoms of all time. But she was never the funniest part. Why can’t we have just one Dreyfus-free season? Does she need the money that bad? Didn’t she make a million bucks an episode on Seinfeld?
Yes, we need more viable TV stars on premium cable if they’re going to be more than niche players in the world of TV comedy.
Iannucci is a comedy genius (PLEASE WATCH The Thick of it and In the Loop), and JLD is amazing. Cant wait for this.
I love Iannucci, but can we also say that JLD should hire whichever photog took the above picture of her for any photos she ever has taken? Just smokin’ hot.
Will her breasts be the plotline of every episode……as was in ‘Ol Christine?
As someone who’s not a JLD fan, I will at least say this: wow is that a hot pic of her.
I’m SO excited for this. Between the brilliance of Iannucci and JLD, it should be a tremendous series!
I’m glad she is finally going to cable in something in a little different. Julia was so much funnier than she had to be on “Christine” and took that show further than the materiel deserved to go. Really one of the best female comedy actresses working and hopefully HBO is the best fit yet
Iannucci is a genius and highly revered over here in England.
I hope you Americans ‘get’ his political satire.
For a warm up watch all 3 seasons of The Thick Of It and you will be drooling. Absolute perfection.
Think Curb meets Yes Minister (English sitcom from 1980s) meets The West Wing!!
yes, we ‘get’ his humor. Hope you ‘get’ that the British condescension shtick went out of style around the time of the Spice Girls movie.
Ha, well put.
I wasn’t meaning to be condescending, I just know that there are cultural differences between the average Englishman and the average American.
feel free to explain to me Benny Hill and Mr. Bean, though, while you’re at it
Love ELAINE! Happy for Julia.
Brilliant! JLD + HBO + Iannucci = quick smart humour for grown-ups. In the Loop smartest comedy in a long time… feeling optimistic about this show.
Wow great picture – she looks 30.
no she doesn’t- looks like a mug shot
This could almost get me to pay for television.
I have never seen any actress, who specializes in sitcom television, better than Julia Louis-Dreyfus. From SNL, through Seinfeld,Watching Ellie, and the terribly underrated Christine, her work is the gold standard for comic acting. Her career is one big master class.
It’s great to see her back on TV. I’ll buy the seasons on disc.
Thus is a brilliant idea. Plus, all Iannucci has to do is write down and have Julia spout each idiocy out of Sarah Palin’s mouth and it should be gold.
NOT A FAN
I hope they don’t wait too many seasons before the cast of Seinfeld starts making appearances.
ideas: Jason Alexander as a stubborn Sec. of Defense and Michael Richards as a mad Italian media baron turned politician.
Great, count down to the 1 billion Sarah Palin References and jokes . . .
