Katie Couric, Alec Baldwin, Brian Williams, Mark Feuerstein and Lorne Michaels took turns roasting outgoing CEO of NBC Universal Jeff Zucker at the Center for Communication’s annual Frank Stanton award luncheon at the Pierre Hotel in New York today. According to news reports, Couric, in a subtle reference to the recent comments by Rick Sanchez that Jews control the media, called Zucker “living proof that Jews may control the media, but that doesn’t mean they’re good at it.” She took a shot at both NBC’s and her own ratings woes at third-ranked CBS Evening News. ”There’s no surprise he was drawn to a game where the lowest score wins,” she said about Zucker, referring to his passion for golf. “He showed me that being in third place really isn’t that bad.” Michaels gave Zucker props for keeping Conan O’Brien on The Tonight Show in the show’s final week when the comedian was blasting the NBC Uni CEO night after night. “I doubt that would have happened at CBS. It definitely would not have happened at The Walt Disney Co. – they’re far too well run. Possibly at Fox.” Williams said the award has “a kiss of death” to it, a reference to the fact that former Viacom CEO Tom Freston too was pushed out of Viacom just a few weeks before receiving the Frank Stanton award.
Zucker also played off the coincidence, warning other industry types who get the news that they would be honored by the Center the following year to “run – do not return the call. And start lining up your next gig now.” As for all the jabs he got from the speakers, “I haven’t felt so much love since I sat down with Steve Burke a few weeks ago,” Zucker quipped, referring to the now infamous sit-down with then-Comcast COO and now his successor as NBC Uni CEO, in which Burke told him he was being let go.

So happy to hear that people think it’s cool to celebrate a moron who brought down a network.
This is a pretty revolting event. Who thought he deserved this award? So many peoples lives were overturned by this obnoxious and arrogant man. He gets millions to leave and his peers see fit to give him this honor.
Sorry, I am a little confused.
But hey Les Moonves and Peter Roth still have felon Charlie Sheen on their payrolls so what do I know about human decency?
What I do know is that if Jeff Zucker or Charlie Sheen were women they would never have been given second, third and fourth and fifth chances to succeed.
Charlie gets the ratings…
I love the dais at the roast, multi-million dollars actors and newspeople, corporate executives, etc. All who have had longtern relations with Mr. Zucker. From his early days at the Today show to the last day he drives out of UNI. In his wake and due to his actions, 100s of people if not a few thousand lost their jobs, their families, homes and stability. Once I saw him interviewed in front of Universal regarding the WGA strike. What is that famous saying, He is so cold he pisses ice wager-Zucker releases razor blades. His attitude toward labor in a labor intensive industry was just criminal. But as usual, he will get a fortune, membership at a country club, and an associate professor’s degree to teach at some prestige university-Communication in the 21st Century. I would only hope the Roast benefited somebody other than his ego. Maybe a few bucks went to a charity. One could only wish!!
Boo! How can you roast Zucker without using actual hot coals?
By “roasting,” I was hoping you meant as on a spit.
big mistake to get rid of the red haired guy, bye Mr. Z….
I agree, you have it so right………a female would never have been able to get to Sheens salary with all the bad press….big loser
Has NBC fired Katie Couric for that joke yet?
Thank you Jeff Zucker for helping to reboot KNIGHT RIDER. If only the series had lived up to the brilliant potential of the TV movie…
Okay, but “The Office”, “30 Rock”, “Parks and Rec” and “Community” are in a class all by themselves on network television. I know their ratings are poor, but that’s not my problem as viewer. Funny is funny.
Okay you like those Thursday comedies. But Office was all Kevin Reilly. (And David Kissinger, who, people forget, was from the Universal side that had the comedy.) Zucker was not a fan of it. 30 Rock was his too. Parks and Rec are from the Office producers. Community is a piece of shit but oh well.
None of this has anything to do with Zucker.
Zucker’s favorite pilot of this season was “Chase.” Don’t forget that. If it were all up to him, Emeril would have three spin-offs by now.
Too damn bad they couldn’t REALLY have roasted him…
