UPDATE: The Shubert Organization has announced cast on this. Joining Kiefer Sutherland and Brian Cox will be Jim Gaffigan (playing George Sikowski), Chris Noth (playing Phil Romano), and Jason Patric (playing Tom Daley). They haven’t yet set a theater.
EARLIER: Last time Kiefer Sutherland was hanging around New York, he was here saving the world as Jack Bauer in the final season of the Fox series 24. Sutherland is coming back to town, this time to star in a revival of the Jason Miller play That Championship Season. He’ll star alongside Brian Cox, with Gregory Mosher directing. Rehearsals start in January for a February 10, 2011 opening. The play is about four guys who come for a reunion with their high school hoops coach 20 years after they won the state championship. The players have all stayed in touch the coach (Cox) but never really achieved their career goals in life. The reunion might be their last, and secrets spill. Sutherland will play the role of James Daley, a local junior high school principal. The original play debuted in 1972 and won both the Tony Award and Pulitizer Prize the following year.
All this goes on while 20th Century Fox continues to work out the beats of the 24 movie. It’s unclear when that picture will go into production with Sutherland reprising. There is a script draft by Billy Ray, and the most recent word I’d heard had Tony Scott discussing the film with the studio. Scott has made no commitment to the project, though he would be an inspired choice given his penchant for creating cinematic tension in films like Man on Fire and the upcoming Unstoppable. At its series best, 24 moved at a similar breakneck pace.

He does know he can’t whisper right?
Wow Tony Scott possibly directing a 24 movie? That’s the best movie news I’ve heard all month! Man on Fire was one of the best shot and edited action films of recent times and very, very underrated. That style plus Jack Bauer intensity? Plus Chloe on the big screen??? Killer. Sounds better than the Matt Damon-less Bourne movie they’re trying to foist on us (much as I respect Tony Gilroy). Hoping this one happens!
I see the sentimentality in Jason Patric appearing in his dad’s play, but I hope he and Kiefer Sutherland have made peace over Julia Roberts or it is going to be a really interesting rehearsal period.
I am definitely going to see Kiefer in this play. Sure missing 24. And the movie news is awesome. Great news all around.
I hope that the movie’ll be made, it would be too sad that “24 h” stops like that. The cinema’s going to offer to Jack Bauer a bigger dimension, it isn’t the moment to give up him, the story isn’t finished, we are many in Europe to look forward to the movie “24 h”, also, if Tony Scott takes care of the movie it’ll be, I am sure, a big show, we count on you Mr Scott !!…
I am years late commenting on this but am only recently a Sutherland fan – am rewatching the entire 24 series from season 1 through 8 LOL on 8 now and watching from a critical standpoint instead of an adrenalin standpoint – also following Touch – so I became curious how such a SKILLED actor could have gone largely unnoticed on the silver screen. I wish I had had the opportunity to see him on stage … I’m sure the stage is much more telling on a person’s acting abilities certain more unforgiving. As he has matured so have his skills – I’m sure life experience, raising a family etc. has helped him evolve – bottom line we need to see more of him – all his old work from Max Dugan to Lost Boys to Stand by Me to Flatliners to 24 to the present he is now in his prime as an actor – I only hope Hollywood knows it and casts him in some truly significant roles and soon!!!!
