David Letterman’s ratings gains over Leno continue. First he tied Leno 3 weeks ago among adults 18-49 for the first time since Leno retook The Tonight Show in March. The two were tied for the past 3 weeks at a 0.9 rating and now, for the first time, Letterman came out on top last week for a clean sweep: victories in adults 18-49 (1.0/4 vs. 0.9/4 for Leno), adults 25-54 (1.3/5 vs. 1.2/5) and total viewers (3.8 million vs. 3.6 million). Compared to the same week last year, Letterman was up a tenth (11%) in 18-49 and down 4% in total viewers. Leno was down a tenth (10%) from what his temporary successor on The Tonight Show, Conan O’Brien delivered on the night last fall. In total viewers, Leno was up 50% as he has been bringing in older audiences. Overall, CBS’ Late Show and NBC’s The Tonight Show have been slow-moving ships stuck in the 0.9-1.0 demo range with only small upticks or slips week-to-week.

Jay can blame the entire 10pm line for a weak lead-in, especially, Chase, LOLA and everything else actually.
But of those lead-ins are WAY better than Conan’s lead-in last year… The Jay Leno Show.
Nope – Chase, Parenthood, and The Apprentice are all getting lower ratings than what The Jay Leno Show got last year.
Who is still watching this crap? Late night television is so OLD. A real bore. Johnny Carson is still the best. RIP.
Johnny Carson may have been “the best,” but that fact remains that as you said, the Late Night format is a complete anachronism. Sure, in Johnny’s day there was the novelty of seeing your favorite film star
in a “candid” setting, but now with TMZ, US Magazine, etc., most of us are sick and tired of these people.
Add to that lame, milquetoast “comedy” bits, kindergarten-grade innuendo, and boring, hollow “celebrities” shilling for their latest sub-par product while reciting “amusing” stories suitable for doped-up people recovering from surgery, and what do you have? Why would anyone want to watch crap like this, save for geriatric invalids hoping to speed up the death process?
Hopefully Conan takes his no-pressure opportunity to stretch and improve the format.
Leno was not good before Conan…during Conan..and now, after he removed Conan.
And, at the end of the day, who watches? Who cares?
With a 0.9, Leno must be losing money for NBC! Just like Conan lost money for NBC with a solid 1.0 in the fourth quarter of 2009.
I think it’s pretty clear what needs to be done: give Jay the 10pm AND 11:30 slots so he can be his own lead-in.
And I suppose he should also get at least 5 minutes of the local news, too. That only seems fair.
When Conan was failing last year, weren’t people trying to say that Leno’s poor lead-in couldn’t be blamed because the news and syndicated shows were between the two in different markets? Yet now it’s the NBC shows’ fault that Leno is failing because they’re bad lead-ins… ooooooookay.
LOL….shhh….you aren’t supposed to remember facts when speaking about Leno.
He is an innocent victim in every situation he is in.
Covering Leno is like covering office intrigue at RFD TV. Nobody’s watching, nobody cares.
Finally this douche Leno will get what he deserves.
Leno is a stooge and Letterman is a sour old cynic. There are no reasons to watch these shows. The skits & bits are unfunny. The jokes range between dirty, sneeringly liberal, or too in-house. The guests are predictable & empty-headed. Both networks would be amazed at what just a tiny little bit of creativity, wit, and simple unpredictability would do, in terms of viewership.
Jay has not been the same since all this crap started. Also his replacement for Kevin…Sucks. He needed Kevin to cover his backside when needed, often. However, Letterman should place his name on a ballot, that’s all he does any more is beat-up on any and all people that attempts to serve for anything within a community? He is the Dummy of Late Night and ill informed for “all” of the subjects that he criticizes other for !!
3.8 vs 3.6 million, but usually even. It doesn’t matter what or who is on before…its the guy and the guests. Bottom line, for the few who actually still watch late night TV live, you like one or the other or a special guest who appears.
However, I’m informed there are some knee slappers in the Louisiana bijou who enjoy Letterman’s Top Ten.
These shows are still on? LOL. Their demos are moving along the lines of daytime soaps with far less promotion. Time to bring The View and Talk to late night!
Letterman is a pervert who sexually exploits his female staffers and got away with it. Jay is a porn obsessed pig who insults his audience. Both of them use scab writers for their monologues. And you’re expecting anything good? My only question is why isn’t there a real alternative? And don’t say Conan or Chelsea. Conan is too frat boy and Chelsea is as bad as any male, and twice as unfunny.
