Lionsgate has closed a deal with Mike White to direct Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, the adaptation of the Seth Grahame-Smith novel that spices up Jane Austen’s time-tested 1813 literary classic with a smattering of flesh-eating walking corpses. David O. Russell stepped out but left behind a script that had filmmakers salivating for the job. White got the formal offer on November 5. Lionsgate can now get busy on casting Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy, and the other characters in the Austen tale. Russell originally had Natalie Portman interested in playing the female lead, but she left the project some time ago as actress, though she is producing through her handsomecharlie banner with Annette Savich, and Darko Entertainment. When she left, Russell wanted Scarlett Johansson and Bradley Cooper. Unclear if they’ll stay, particularly as Johansson was in contention for several other high profile films that were casting up before landing the female lead opposite Matt Damon in the Cameron Crowe-directed We Bought A Zoo.
White, who scripted School of Rock, made his feature directing debut on Year of the Dog. He is repped by UTA.

…and don’t forget he was on The Amazing Race with his dad!
LOVE him! Can’t wait to see this!
Agreed. I think he’ll do a great job.
Based on that photo he can play one of the zombies.
He was an ass on the picket line outside Warner Bros. and he’ll probably ben an ass on the set.
Hi Mike, stop bragging.
GREAT Mike White picture. He’s not necessarily the best looking cat in real life, but that’s a rough pic nonetheless. Yikes.
So you are we thinking of casting? Lets discuss! I glad they Natalie Portman backed out. She’s been in enough period pieces already. Scarlett Johansson, meh, she’s okay. Hmmm Ben Foster, Fridha Pinto, Henry Cho, Maggie Grace, who else? Just throwing out names here.
AT LAST!! THE MOVIE THAT HAD TO BE MADE!
When were filmmakers salivating over this script? It is terrible.
Script is bad and Really is right.
Tick, tick, tick. This is a movie that will be mentioned years from now as a cult classic but will BOMB in theaters. It will probably be a good movie — like Watchmen or Donnie Darko — but it won’t do dick business in initial release. Maybe after-markets will be kind?
It’s yet another bet on the Comic-Con audience that won’t pan out, IMHO.
Having read the book, and marveled at the authors ability to seemlessly inject zombies into Jane Austin’s original script, I have an idea:
Merchant Ivory recently made a version of Pride and Prejudice, (I’m pretty sure it was Keira Knightly, but I could have things confused) Lions Gate needs to buy that film, hire the same actors, and have Mike White Inject the new scenes and dialogue the same way the author of the book did. It would be awesome!
This is a brilliant idea! Truly a mashup then.
austen fans don’t want to see a zombie movie. zombie movie fans don’t want to see a costume drama. who greenlit this?
What the hell is the obsession with Hollywood & remaking classics. This is a classic love story that was greatly done by both movies which were true to the piece. Adding zombies is just the male way of trying to make the movie interesting. Um, maybe it was meant to be watched and read only by females. & if guys are interested in reading & watching the movie then don’t be ashamed to do it or if you are then go see the newest action flick. Heck, I don’t mind action movies, as long as they stay true as well. But this is just dumb & stupid, like that book of where Jane Austen is a vampire, come on people, come up with your own stuff!!!
Hey Chrristine please don’t speak for all women as I do not wish you to represent me. Personally, I can’t wait to see this movie be made. Those of you bashing on the idea, have you even read the book….probably not, which is why you don’t see the humor. It would be amazing if Keira Knightly came back and played the zombie version of Elizabeth Bennet. I love zombie everything. Can’t wait, can’t wait, can’t wait!!!
