EXCLUSIVE: It will be an abbreviated second (and probably final) season for the CW’s drama Life Unexpected after the network today decided not to order additional episodes beyond the show’s original 13-episode order. The writing has been on the wall: despite critical praise, LUX has been the the lowest-rated series on the CW this fall and was the only series with a 13-episode order not to receive a back order from the network 10 days ago when freshmen Nikita and Hellcats and veteran One Tree Hill received full-season pickups. In contrast, LUX, which stars Brittany Robertson, Shiri Appleby and Kristoffer Polaha, had only been given a pickup for 2 additional scripts. While the CW is putting off the final decision on LUX until May, the January season finale will likely serve as a series finale. It seems like the show’s writers are treating it that way – I hear last the episode will resolve many of the storylines on the show to give fans a satisfying finale.

That’s a shame that LUX never found its audience. The Cast will move on to bigger things as will Liz and her team…
I think this is stupid. The CW always cancels the best shows. One tree Hill and Life Unexpected are two of the greatest shows, they give the CW viewers, otherwise I am sure no1 would ever watch. I hope they reconsider to renew these episodes. It’s a big mistake.
I agree..the cw always cancels the best shows!!! yet leaves something like HELL Cats give me a break!!
SO LAME!!!! LUX was the best show on television!!!!!! Hello! Why does the CW always cancel the BEST shows. I am so done with that network! They wouldnt know a good show if it hit them in the face!
I loved the show Life unexpected. Why is all the good shows taken off and they add garbage like another csI or another reality show which is trash. I do hope they will bring back Life unexpected if not I will not watch CW again and I will pass this info on to my friends and hope they do the same.
Life Unexpected was one of my favorite shows on TV this season. It’s sad that a show like Hellcats, one of the most pathetic shows I’ve ever seen, received better ratings. It makes me have little faith with society. I keep telling myself to stop watching shows that come out on the CW, because this is not the first time this has happened. I didn’t listen to myself and now I’m sad to lose one of my favorite shows )o=
This is a very well-written early report on the sad news of an extremely under-appreciated, full-of-heart, rarity of a show that was unfortunately developed for Dawn Ostroff’s embarrassment of a network. One she’s quickly pile-driving into the ground with offensively mindless and plastic programming trash. (only exception: Vampire Diaries) The woman, who must have something juicy on someone, is such a delusional, clueless buffoon and it’ll be a great day in Hollywood when she gets the ax. To the writers, cast and crew of LUX, thank you for all you’ve done. Your refreshing and inspiring work would’ve been much better served on a real network. Unfortunately, LUX, this kind of stuff (poor ratings for great shows) happens to the best of ‘em – and it’s been a great ride.
This show is better than anything else The CW airs by a mile, and if they let it go, while whatever they stick in the timeslot might get better numbers, their arsenal will be greatly weakened in terms of quality. Shame.
LAME!!! seriously? This is a horrible call on the CW’s part. This is an awesome show with fantastic talent! And they re cancelling it! Again, LAME! This is not looking good for the network, cancelling the best shows?? Yeah thats real smart!!
Well, the final straw! I’ll watch Life Unexpected until the end, but no more CW for me. It’s time for me to move on to a better network.
I toally agree! I’m sick of the CW and there LACK of talent. OTH, and LUX are the only good shows and they are lucky to have them. But I guess this generation would rather be brain washed into watching stupid shows, its less the THINK about I guess….
I miss Gilmore Girls, and I hope OTH gives me another season. As for LUX, I’ll watch until the end, I just hope they give it an ending and don’t just cut it off (besides, I need to see lux and Eric hook up…they are so cute together)
TV is so full of sex and or violence. CW and Dawn Ostroff cater to the lowest common denominator. Always. CW won’t support a truly good show. I find the posters for Nikita porn. I don’t watch. Does Ostroff want the CW to be Fox now?
I am a 26 year old and I watched Gossip Girl and LUX. Nothing else on that network likes women. It is really disgusting.
CW is now going to lose the leftover WB viewers it wanted to attract. We grew up watching Gilmore.
Or maybe they don’t want us.
Im with you..cw is constantly cancelling shows.. dont really think they give the shows a fair shot.
worst news of the day. This show is a fave for many reasons, mainly because it’s great.
This wonderful show is lead by the voice of a wonderful writer Liz Tigelar. It is on a network that doesn’t understand or appreciate it. Original voices in TV are so rare and to be valued. CW, CBS, ABC, Lifetime squanders talent — especially female writing talent all the time. Sad this fine show didn’t find the audience and wasn’t properly platformed by the CW. It is simply terrific.
I watched the recent episode during election night and as much as the characters are interesting, the story line has gotten off track into the soap opera realm. The Baze character hasn’t grown with a new found kid in his life because he is still on the “king of the one-night stand” mentality as he overwhelms his boss. I thought his return to a “real job” would be his turning around point but it inevitably returned to his sexual needs. Cate is consistently a train wreck and the marriage was a bad decision to begin with and neither one should have walked down the aisle because it was plain to see that the reasons for marriage wasn’t there to begin especially the ever lost Cate is still seeking love and acceptance from someone she clearly still has feelings for. And Lux and the teacher is just wrong on so many levels that it is giving impressionable young girls minds that it is okay to have a relationship with a teacher. The number of real stories with student/teacher affairs is criminal and they seem to play this ff as some unrequited love story when in fact, it is a criminal activity being played out like it’s okay. I particularly find this story arc disturbing and if they allow it to go on without consequences then it deserves the 13 episode end and never return.
Oh, lighten up, chick. With all the murders and viciousness on TV and in real-life, you choose to focus on a so-called “disturbing” attraction between a way-older-acting-than-16 young woman…and a guy just a few years older than her? Are you for REAL?
Yeah, you just go take out your personal “vengeance” and “vendetta” against a show for a fictional storyline (the most interesting on the series, by the way). Maybe you need to buy DVDs of Ozzie and Harriet or Leave it to Beaver. (Oops, does “Beaver” offend you, too?)
Sheesh.
i agree with you 100 percent on the whole teacher student realionship storyline they tried to make it seem ok but it was a real jump the shark for this show it seems to me that they wrote this story about a student and teacher realionship just so some tv watch dog group can complain about it and hope some major news network like fox news whould pick up on the story and complain about it and whith that controversy the ratings whould pick up with people watching just to see what was the big deal
Stupid and bad decision!
“Life Unexpected” is the best show on the CW: Better than all the other garbage on that network. Does the CW want to specialize in canceling quality shows. I started watching “Life Unexpected” even though the fact that the CW ended “Veronica Mars” was unforgivable. If they cancel LUX, I’m done with these people.
Sad news… Unfortunately, most quality shows just don’t get the backing they did 10-15 years ago. This show has had be as a fan since it premiered. When horrible shows like Hawaii 5-0 find an audience and good shows like this does not its pretty sad
This is a great, smart little show that the old WB would have known how to market and support, but sadly the CW marketing department only knows the tactic of “sex sells.” The storylines have gotten soapier this season, but I chalk that up to dumb network notes. They think we’d rather watch yet another story about a student/teacher romance, when, really, the stories about trying to fit in as a former foster child were the most interesting and engaging. The escapism of “Gossip Girl” is fun, but I’d bet more people identify with the feelings of awkwardness and worrying about where you belong depicted on “Life Unexpected.” Too bad the network didn’t bother to capitalize on that.
I’m so upset about this…I can’t believe “One Tree Hill” “90210″ and “Nikita” are actually getting revived and this show isn’t. I love Kate’s character, she’s such a train wreck sometimes, but she makes real women mistakes. I love Lux and her best bud. I was really looking forward to seeing the show progress. It can’t be that horrible. I was reluctant to watch at first, but after watching 1 or 2 episodes I was hooked. Please give it another chance…I say place it after Vampire Diaries and you’ll see people will get hooked just as I did.
‘I can’t believe “One Tree Hill” “90210? and “Nikita” are actually getting revived and this show isn’t.’
It’s because hardly anyone is watching it. The other show have more fans. It’s not that hard to understand.
It’s true, Veronica. Unfortunately, Americans are not very bright. TV Ratings are a clear example.
Exactly…not very smart.
This show is remiiniscent of the old days when the wb ruled the air. LUX has a presence similar to dawsons creek with a touch of gilmore girls. I wish this network would stop pulling the plug prematurely on well written dramas. One of the funniest shows to date that ended to soon was Related. It was true comedy and an escape. Maybe if it hadn’t been for the merger that show could still be on our minds. Who knows what’s in store for the cws future after it looses it biggest players OTH smallville and even LUX. It’s scary to think that this network will succumb to overkill known as reality tv.
When I saw this show it reminded me in voice of two brilliant but unappreciated shows “Side Order of Life” which Lifetime threw to the wolves and Liz wrote on. Then the genius of “My So Called Life” which ABC put in three different time slots over two seasons. 18 were made in all. Stuart Bloomberg who was the exec at ABC that killed it now as a producer takes CREDIT for it.
Special writing voices writing shows about character. People look back at My So Called Life (it took years but it is finally out on DVD and sells well) and we see a show that is not stupid plot contrivances but about growing up in high school and trying figure out who you are. Network execs no longer exist who can understand or support a show like this.
So what are the lessons? Besides don’t put the word “Life” in the title?
It is all about male driven episodic stories with writing that sounds the same.
ABC likes the fact that in the season finale of Grey’s Anatomy a gunman walks into the hospital and opens fire.
It is so sad.
You’re right. The Wb had class and dignity. Good show runners were drooling to be on the same network as Everwood and Smallville…shows where sex was secondary to heart. CW should just be put out of its misery…or maybe just Dawn Ostroff.
I’m not really surprised, because a show that had a lot of potential has given way to ridiculous storytelling and contrived plots.
The biggest asset this show has is Kerr Smith (Ryan), and I truly hope bigger and better things are in his future. I never watched “Dawson’s Creek” much, but love him on this show. Ryan is the only mature character among them all.
I find Cate flighty and annoying 80% of the time, and cannot identify with this woman who is so unprofessional and unconfident. Lux’s relationship with her teacher is absolutely wrong and I hate it (like the actor who plays the teacher, though). And how many times can they throw Baze into situations where he doesn’t belong, just to create supposed “tension” in Ryan and Cate’s relationship?
Sad that what could have been a great show declined so fast, but the last two episodes remain on my DVR- I just haven’t been motivated to watch. Apparently, I’m not the only one.
I was disappointed with the “julia” story line. I loved this show last season and instead of trying to move the story along with how do two people raise a child they hadn’t seen or known about for 16 years… we get a fling with a teacher, pregnancy scare before the wedding, etc. It’s not up to the standard they set for themselves in the first season. I’m sad to see it get canceled.
This has been an odd fall for the major networks… I’m not vested in a single new show. I liked The Whole Truth but that’s gone now. But all the new fall shows could get canceled and I wouldn’t notice.
Oh I heard NBC won’t air reruns of Parenthood in Dec – does that mean they aren’t vested in that now?
Yes, it was a great show, but why all the hate for the network?? Blame the uneducated masses who aren’t watching! How can you blame the CW for taking off a show that isn’t bringing in the ratings? If only 5 families shop at a local grocery store, is the store OBLIGATED to keep their doors open for those families who are smart enough to shop there? Even though they do not purchase enough groceries to pay the light bill? Or is the store smarter to close the money-wasting location down and re-open elsewhere?
Don’t blame the CW. Blame the public.
I don’t “blame the public” either. Your statement that people who don’t watch the show are “uneducated” is disgusting and insulting. And I say this as a fan of the show. The attitude that anyone who doesn’t like a show you enjoy is stupid is really conceited and rude.
I love how everyone blames the network for canceling its lowest rated show. Not one of its lowest rated shows, but THE lowest rated show it airs. Why don’t you blame your friends who don’t watch the show. It’s so *bleeping* lame that you people continually the networks for running their business. Get a clue people.
I don’t “blame” anyone. If people don’t want to watch a show, that doesn’t make them stupid or bad or anything. It just means they don’t want to watch, for whatever reason. Maybe they prefer a different show or work during that time or simply don’t want to turn on the TV. Maybe they hate Kerr Smith or are outside walking the dog or are going online. Whatever.
The CW is doing the right thing. The show’s ratings stink, and it’s had plenty of time to improve. It’s not cheap to put a series on the air. They’re losing money off of it. How many rational people would keep something that’s losing them a small fortune?
Laura,
I don’t understand why you are attacking AJ and I when it seems we share the same point of view. Perhaps I should have put quotation marks around my use of the word “uneducated.” Of course I do not think people that watch a certain show are uneducated. But there have been several statements on this page that would claim that to be the case. And those people DO in fact “blame” the network, claiming to boycott the CW and claiming it is all about trash TV.
AJ and I are just pointing out that it is not Dawn Ostroff’s or the CW’s fault that this so-called “trash TV” is the only thing on the CW that people tune in for. They have tried to put quality television shows on the channel, but the public does not tune in to those shows. Therefore, if they want to blame anyone, they should blame the viewership. THat is all we are saying…
LOL, you call what I said an attack? You can dish it out, but you can’t take it.
Also, the idea that LU is “classy” while other shows on the CW are “trash” is pretty amusing. It’s full of melodrama, random infidelities, casual sex, and that charming student/teacher romance. Yeah, that’s really so much more classy than everything else on the CW!
LOL, you think what I said was an attack? You can sure dish it out, but you can’t take it.
LU is no more “classy” than anything else on the CW. It has casual sex, random infidelities, risque scenes and dialogue, teens getting away with disrespectful and sometimes illegal behavior, a teacher fooling around with an underage student, etc. How is that “classy” while the rest of the CW is supposedly “trashy”?
Boycotting CW! Life unexpected was a really really good show.
the only good shows on CW now are Smallville and Supernatural and they are both ending this season
Life Unexpected was gar-bage and lasted a bit longer than it should have
Never saw it. Only show’s I watch on CW are 90210 and Vampire Diaries.
LUX is most certainly the smartest, most well-written show on the CW. This feels reminiscent of Veronica Mars. A bigger fan base will find it only after it’s gone. But we honestly can’t blame the CW for canceling, this is a business after all. Thank you CW for green lighting a fantastic show in the first place…. but next time don’t give up so quickly on it. (Remember shows like Grey’s Anatomy? Bad ratings at first, huge success later on.) Also don’t throw your most struggling show against the highest rated show on TV (DWTS). Be smarter with your scheduling! We’ll miss you LUX!
I thought that it was a great show, even though this season has very off in very bad directions. Yes, Baze is a pain and a child, Cate is annoying as hell, but Britt Robertson’s Lux is brilliant. She has a lot of talent and deserves to do well.
Part of the problems is that The CW has no clue on how to promote it, so basically, they just stopped. The old WB would have made this a winner.
Maybe the producers should try to move it to ABC Family. It would fit in with their programming.
AGREED!!
The CW can’t market for anything!! You are right. If this was on (the old) The WB, it would have been a winner!
it’s unfortunate that this show did not develop the fan base needed to keep the show going. I enjoyed the 1st season, but as some have already commented, the 2nd season storylines have not been as strong as expected given the 1st season writing.
I know many like the teacher/Lux storyline, but it is unfortunate that the writers feel they have to go down this path to encourage viewership. Since we are all talking about it, I supposed they accomplished gaining attention, unfortunately not enough. All the actors are great, love Cate’s Mom, and I’m sure they will be on other great shows.
Here’s hoping the finale will provide closure to the storylines and leave the faithful viewers with a good feeling.
CW is disgusting and CBS/P just as bad. If you are a talented writer be warned about selling your wares to these deeply untalented executives. Dawn Tarnowski Ostrof has no taste or character. And the folks at CBS/P take whatever was creative or original in your work and grind it down to nothing as they make you outline it until you are actually explaining in outline how the lights are turned on and how shoelaces are tied. CBS/P is the most humorless and literal minded group in town.
This show was too good for them.
CW is more than disgusting. They have played the sex card too many times…and now they can’t convince the audience there’s anything of substance on their airwaves. Tribune has given up on them, the audience has given up on them, and alas, Dawn Ostroff is probably getting a fat Christmas bonus. Tell me what she has done other than being really good at keeping secrets on Les Moonves.
Hey “Jason” did you write that idiotic teacher/student storyline? Heh heh heh, sounds like you’ve got some anger issues dude. This show was really good until they destroyed it with stupid plot lines
