Paramount Pictures has pushed up the wide release of The Coen brothers-directed True Grit to December 22. It had been scheduled to open on Christmas. What difference does three days make? Well, it can help build audience awareness going into the holidays. Christmas Eve is normally a down day at the box office, and distributors often shy away because it doesn’t reflect well in the box office tally. But after Paramount brass was shown the finished film by the Coens, the decision was made to giddyap and get the Western out in front of the holiday. So instead of opening on Christmas Day–which falls on a Saturday–Paramount gave itself the equivalent of having two days of sneaks to build buzz among the adult audience the film is shooting for. Here is a trailer for the film:

why?
Paramount must REALLY like the finished product. The trailer did kick butt and I’m willing to be the finished product is stellar as well. This movie, from the tracking I’ve gotten wind of, should do boffo box office and be a critics darling — a rarity in 2010. After that, next stop: Oscars. All aboard?
Glad to see it. This is the only movie I’m really looking forward to this holiday season.
So…does this indicate anything about the films prospects, or is it simply that the studio wants to get a head-start on the weekend for financial reasons.
Coen Bros. Deakins. Bridges. Cannot wait to see this movie!
The script is phenomenal and the Bros. will win major awards love for the adaptation. Damon is also playing WAY against type (SPOILER with a key body part missing for much of the film) so he could be a contender too. But the lynchpin is this young girl they have cast–If she clicks this is the movie to beat this year. As is the script is superior to Inception and The Social Network.
Okay, I was about to be a smart ass and then I watched the trailer. Looks good. I’m a big Western fan and I remember watching the original True Grit as a kid on TV. I think I’ll pay to see this one. Hope it doesn’t disappoint.
Sorry, but the Coens are the most overrated directors out there. A True Grit reboot? Really? Who the frak was asking for one to begin with? And since they’re the fucking Coens, the Academy will rubber-stamp their arthouse, dense crap once again.
Because they’re the Coens, or because they make, you know, good movies that most everyone love? “Arthouse” and “dense” seem like pretty good indicators you just don’t understand their movies.
As a person who hates both Matt Damon and Josh Brolin for political reasons, I will say that this looks extremly awesome.
You HATE people you’ve never met who have no actual power because they disagree with you politically? Classy.
Amen to that. It’s beyond conceited to even think about a re-do of one of the Duke’s film. Who the heck do they think they are??????????
Just to be clear, it is not a remake. It is a different adaptation of the book. The first filming of “True Grit” was under Henry Hathawy’s direction of Marguerite Roberts’ adaptation of Charles Portis’ novel. The Coehn bothers will deliver, as always.

The Coens actually made a good movie? Is there honestly anyone who’s surprised?
If you’ve ever seen them talk about it, they claim rather exhaustively, that No Country For Old Men is not actually a Western.
While that sounds ridiculous to me – seriously – I suppose this is their way of going ‘Yeah now *here’s* a Western!’
I’m sure it’s as good as it looks.
It might even ‘revive’ the genre, to a certain extent.
appears to be just a remake, not a ‘re-imagining.’
why not just watch the Duke in the original.
yawn…..
The trailer looks good but nothing special.
Ditto on Coens’ being overrated.
Matt Damon in yet another movie?
Has he met his quota for the year?
Huh? This is THE second worst trailer I have seen,, I didn’t believe anyone, the score sucked. P better get back in the edit booth and make the needed changes. Who approves their trailers? I’m not buying Joel or Ethan approved this.
This looks extremely stupid. Lets hope they do NOT try to sell it in the Midwest, it might play ok in large cities but anything other than that will be offensive.
Don’t try to sell it in the Midwest? Really? I’m writing this while sitting in my midwestern home, saw the trailer with a midwestern audience at a midwestern multiplex, and should be offended by it… why?
This is a good thing. This means that Paramount is excited for the film, and it improves the film’s box office chances opening on the Wednesday before Christmas. Most everyone will not be working or in school during this time. Expect this to kill at the box office and during awards season.
I especially like the very fake facial hair on the baby-faced Damon and Brolin. Looks stupid, as does the film. Haven’t we seen this before? Ditto on the over-rated Coens, still riding the Fargo gravy train.
As a fan of John Wayne and a child of the 60′s, I am stoked about this movie. I think the Coen Brothers are consistently good film makers and IMHO, the best of our day. Consider their portfolio: Miller’s Crossing, Barton Fink, Raising Arizona, Fargo, The Big Lebowski, O Brother, Where Art Thou?, No Country for Old Men. The original True Grit was an awesome “feel good” movie with the crusty old Duke, doing his thing. After watching the trailer, the Coen Bros. seem to be capturing the hopefulness of doing right, with the darkness that was so well captured in Blood Simple and No Country for Old Men. Bring it on! I can hardly wait.
I saw True Grit in the theather with my Dad when I was 10 years old and now I look forward to seeing it 41 years later with my kids. From John Wayne to Jeff Bridges does not get any better than this!
The movie is awesome its in my top 3 of my time ……:…………………………the girl is hot
I loved it the funniest part I thought was when he asked so you were backin up which way would that Be? Well I always go backwards when I’m backin up.
