2ND UPDATE: Extreme Makeover: Home Edition host Ty Pennington was among Denise Cramsey’s closest industry friends. He worked with her on two series, Trading Spaces and EMHE. The note he sent today to the EMHE crew is below.
UPDATE: Cheryl Hines, who executive produced NBC’s reality series School Pride with Cramsey, weighs in on Cramsey’s passing below.
9:30 AM: Emmy-winning reality TV producer Denise Cramsey died of a brain aneurysm while exercising yesterday. She was 41. She most recently executive produced the school makeover series School Pride, which airs Fridays on NBC. Cramsey, who had a first-look deal with Warner Horizon, previously created, executive produced and ran the ABC primetime reality series True Beauty alongside Tyra Banks and Ashton Kutcher. Earlier this year, she exec-produced the Jeff Probst/Mark Burnett special Live For The Moment. An impressive track record with TLC led her to take the helm of Trading Spaces for over 100 episodes. She moved from Philadelphia to Los Angeles in 2003 and helped produce USA’s House Wars, Bravo’s Manhunt, and ABC’s long-running Extreme Makeover: Home Edition where she rose to executive producer/showrunner. She received 4 Emmy nominations, 2 Emmy wins, and a Producers’ Guild Nomination. Cramsey also recently produced her first feature, a documentary entitled Expedition Inspiration which tells the story of the non-profit group that takes breast cancer survivors up mountains after their treatment.
Ty Pennington’s e-mail to the crew:
As you all know I was very close to Denise. She was like a sister, a mom, a best friend. Just when you thought you were at the end of your rope, she would make a comment that made you laugh but keep going. She believed in Extreme Makeover: Home Edition because the over all outcome was REAL. No matter how much behind the scenes crap was going on, she knew what we did mattered. I will never forget her first time as EP on the show in New Orleans. Everything that could go wrong did go wrong. She never slept, she never cried and she never gave up. To rally the team, her and (story producer) Robin (Samuels) played John Belushi’s “When the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor” speech from Animal House over the speakers from Wexler.
I have never met a stronger, more determined person with a heart that loved EVERYONE. She took the time to appreciate who you were as a person. There are people you meet in life that change you. Denise Cramsey made me a better man because she forced me to believe in myself the way she believed in me. For those of us who knew her, let’s consider ourselves damn lucky and never forget her strength, spirit and her laugh.
This holiday raise a glass, give a hug, and laugh out loud …and GIVE THANKS that our lives are better because she was is in it. She will always be my team leader.”
Cheryl Hines’ statement:
I am overcome by the loss of Denise Cramsey. She was a talented, strong, inspirational woman. I only hope her family can find some comfort in knowing that she gave thousands of children hope and happiness with the exceptional work she did on School Pride. When I think of Denise, I remember her surrounded by the friends she loved to work with, laughing at the little, unexpected moments most might have overlooked.
Here is a statement by Cramsey’s agency WME, which confirmed her death this morning:
It is with tremendous sadness that the immediate and extended family of Denise Cramsey is confirming her death yesterday due to a brain aneurysm suffered in the morning. At Denise’s side were her fiancé Scott, best friend Risa and brother Billy. Continuing the spirit of charity and kindness that embodied Denise, her organs will be donated. We thank everybody for their thoughts and prayers and words cannot express our sadness with the loss of Denise.
Warner Horizon and NBC also issued statements mourning Cramsey’s passing:
“Denise was an amazing and deeply committed producer, an Emmy winner who passionately cared about all the projects she worked on. She was an inspiration to many, whether it was from her professional work to improve public schools, help those in need or raise money for breast cancer research, or her personal love of scaling the mountains of the world,” Warner Horizon’s statement reads.
Said NBC, “Cramsey was not only a friend and colleague, she was a respected producer and passionate about her craft.”

Sad news for someone who was relatively young. Condolences to her family.
To pass away due to a brain aneurysm while she was working out in order to maintain a healthy lifestyle is scary.
On behalf of Dr. Jacqueline Sanderlin and the Landrum Family, Creative producer for the show-School Pride we would like to extend our condolences and prayers to the family of a wonderful, smart, creative, funny, easy-going, young woman such as Denise. It was a pleasure meeting her and being in her “creative” presence. She helped create a TV show such as School Pride to help our kids receive better schools and updated equipment. I hope and pray the show continues with its good work!! RIP Denise…You will be missed.
Catherine Landrum, RN
Wow. So young. Too young. It is so very sad that precious little can be done to stave off a brain aneurysm until it strikes. A young, vibrant person working out — doing the things all doctors advise us to do — should, in a more fair universe, be spared such a fate.
My sincere condolences to the family and friends of Denise Cramsey. She sounded like one very cool lady. She leaves behind an impressive body of work – impressive in large part because the type of reality programming she brought to us provided stories Hollywood could use more of: about the power of the human spirit and doing good for others. That, in itself, is a rich legacy from her worth remembering on this, the eve of Thanksgiving.
RIP.
Tragic. Condolences to her family.
My sincere condolences to her family. I had the pleasure of knowing this wonderful lady. My blessings to Scott and her family.
Rest in Peace !!!
My heartfelt sympathy to her family.
She was an AMAZING woman. My heart goes out to the entire Cramsey family. Her mother is possibly one of the sweetest people I have ever met. I can’t imagine what she is going through.
Very sad. She always seemed a good straight shooting person who did her craft with care and a hard work ethic. Very sad…. RIP.
Several weeks ago Denise Cramsey was the speaker at an informal Malibu WIF breakfast, where I met her and we talked about meeting in December. Denise was warm, smart, and devoted to her profession. She cared about her projects and about her subjects. And she was very proud of her newest documentary. We will miss her.
Denise we will miss you! My heart goes out to one of my best friends Scott. I truly feel for you and all your family in this time of such a huge loss. Sincerely Brian Gaetke
School Pride was one of the best productions I have ever worked on. Denise was a kind, genuine lovely woman and an amazing leader. My love goes to Scott and all her family and friends. We will miss you so much Denise.
Our family didn’t have the pleasure of meeting Denise, but she was deeply cared for and greatly spoken about by my daughter. We extend our deepest sympathies to her family and friends. “Denise Cramsey was an amazing, beautiful woman inside and out. She will be greatly missed. She touched the hearts of so many people and will continue to do so through the spirit of her career.”
I had the opportunity to work with this amazing woman all summer. We talked about death after I got news of a friend of mine passing and she told me that you have to live life to it’s fullest because you never know. I remember her making me laugh and saying the show must go on! She touched so many lives and I thank God for letting us borrow one of his angels. my prayers go out to her family who she talked about many times.
kym Whitley….School Pride cast
To Kym, with a “Y”: You seem stupid and loose so let’s add JINX to your resume, too! Get some braces on that road grill.
I just watched a previously recorded episode of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition and was not aware of who Denise Cramsey was until then, but she sounds like she was a wonderful woman, well respected and much loved. My heart goes out to the family and many friends of Ms. Cramsey. God Bless
(P.S. To the ugly comment by “Lou Dobbs”, this is not the place for for such rudeness in regards to your comment about Ms Kym Whitley. She was here to post her condolences which should have been YOUR agenda as well. Your mother apparently did not raise a gentleman. Shame on you. So disrespectful.)
I went to high school with Denise and she was always a kind, giving, creative person. She always had a smile on her face and has done so much in her life since those days. Denise you will be missed! Prayers tro her family and friends!
I know I speak for my colleagues at Lehigh Valley Health Network. We have had the privilege of working with Denise’s sister and her mother. Knowing them afforded us the opportunity of knowing Denise by osmosis. The entire family is genuinely kind, caring, knowledgeable and loving. This was a tragic loss but Denise gave so much in her short life on earth to so many others. Our hope is that in some small way her family, friends and fiancee can take solace in knowing she loved life and lived it to it’s fullest. She loved her family and career with passion. She gave back to the world in abundance and her life was not in vain. R.I.P. Our prayers go out to the entire Cramsey family.
To my dearest friend Mary and her most loving family,
Words cannot express how deeply saddened we are and so devasted at the passing of your daughter,Denise and can only imagine you and your family’s heartfelt saddness. What Denise accomplished in so little time on this earth for the good of humanity will be remembered forever. She truly was an angel in her own right. Mary, you know that you all are in our thoughts and prayers.
Sincerely,
Mike and Rosemary
I met Denise only a few months ago and yet i feel as if i have known her for years. She had a very genuine personality that made you believe every word she said. She was a true leader who never asked anyone to do anything that she was not willing to do herself. She inspired everyone she came in contact with. I was always amazed at her energy and enthusiasm for life. Very few people have that sort of impact on others, but she did. I will never forget her and she has left a legacy all over this country that will live on forever. She will be sorely missed, but never forgotten. God Bless you Denise….Tom and Dawn
we extend our support, love and compassion for the family, friends and teamers Denise made magic with. she was young, spirited and a visionary. her passing is not taken lightly. we will continue to live life fully in her honor. bless. lisa silvera and team in miami
You were always amazing. The stars will shine brighter now with big D! Nobody loved you like me. Rest easy buddy, you earned it.
Carolyn,
Although no words can really help to ease the loss you bear, just know that you are very close in every thought and prayer. I am overcome with sadness.
Trish
I met Denise recently and instantly loved her. She was so happy and told me how much she loved her family, her mom, Scott and his two boys, we laughed and shared funny stories about life. The news of her death hit me like a rock, she was a bright shining star, you only had to meet her once to know she had a heart of gold and was full of talent, love, compassion and humanity.
I met Denise on the Idaho shoot, she was a driving compassionate force for that wonderful team of caring people that she inspired. It was ammazing to see , first hand, that the tears and caring of all who worked with her were real.
My sincere condolences to her family. May time and love for Denise ease your pain.. with time
Sympathy to her family and friends for the loss of who sounds like one hell of a lovely woman who touched lives .
After watching a few episodes of “School Pride” and seeing the “In Memory Of” at the end of the LACES makeover on Friday night, I realized who it was…once I did some research, the stunning fact remains she has done what so many of us wish we could–to not only make a difference, but make an indelible difference on those around us–and not just one person at a time, hundreds of people at a time. I hope that the spirit of her work is carried on; I certainly enjoy watching the transformations taking place by the people who will benefit. If not for anything else, the rest of the nation can see that “L.A.” is not the perfect 8-x-10 glossy place people think it is. It is my native home and am glad Ms. Cramsey came in with fresh eyes to help the schools that need it so badly–and to highlight great children in our communities. To the creative soul that you are Denise, may you rest in peace.
I met Denise and worked with Denise for about a month prior to working on the “School Pride” episode in Kingston Springs, TN. I was the furniture guy, known as “Demco Dave” to Denise and her staff. I had the pleasure of coordinating when a lot of the furniture would arrive with Denise. In the short time I met and worked with her, I thought very highly of her passion. I shared her vision for schools because I have a father who is a School Superintendent. I understand the needs of schools and I support the direction Denise and others associated with “School Pride” are going with the show. My wife, kids and I would like to send out deepest sympathy to the Cramsey family and friends. May you rest in peace!
– David
As the maintenance Lead for our schools, I had the privilege of meeting Denise during the filming of the School Pride episode in Needles, Ca. She was a delight to be around and had the most professional crew I have ever had the pleasure to work around. She always wore a smile, even in the oppressive heat of August in the Mojave Desert. She seemed to be a tireless leader that was respected by everyone. I hope her family will accept my heartfelt sympathy for their loss. Thanks for all you did for my kids, Denise.
the preverse dilemma of existence…so talented, so loved, so dedicated, so remembered..she left much too soon. I
can know her through her body of work.
