Another heavily hyped episode of Fox’s Glee (4.9/14, 11.6 million), this one featuring new recurring guest star Gwyneth Paltrow, was once again the top-rated telecast on Tuesday among adults 18-49, up 9% from the show’s last week fast national result. (Glee always gets adjusted up a tenth in the finals as it did last week.) Raising Hope (2.7/7), which tends to go down in the finals, including a .1 slip last week, was up a tenth from its fast national demo number last Tuesday. A Raising Hope repeat (1.8/5) did almost 40% better than an original Running Wilde did last week in the 9:30 PM slot.
NCIS has been so consistently reliable, you can set your clock by it. Last night it drew a 3.9/11 demo rating, the same as its fast national delivery last week. (The veteran procedural tends to go up a tenth in the finals as it did last Tuesday.) NCIS’ audience, 19.4 million, was also almost identical to last week’s 19.8 million as the drama series once again topped the night in total viewers. It was actually a full night of deja vu ratings performances at CBS, with the network’s other two dramas, NCIS: LA (3.3/9, 15.8 million) and The Good Wife (2.2/6, 11.7 million) also matching their demo results from last week, both season lows.
A somewhat inexplicable 23% drop for ABC’s No Ordinary Family (1.7/5), which posted an all-time low. This is by far the steepest week-to-week decline for the freshman drama which had never dropped below a 2.0 demo rating and last week reversed its down trend with a healthy 10% ratings bump. Dancing with the Stars (3.3/9, 17.2 million), which featured another miracle survival by Bristol Palin, was down a tenth from last week, while Detroit 1-8-7 (1.8/5) was flat with last week’s fast national. (The rookie cop drama will probably adjust down in the finals because of a Dancing overrun as it did last week.)
The ongoing controversy surrounding the strike of The Biggest Loser crew didn’t have an adverse effect the ratings for the veteran reality show (2.5/7), which was up a tenth from last week. But Parenthood (1.8/5) at 10 PM went in the opposite direction, down 14% for a series low after posting a gain last week.

Tuesday is the worst night of network television outside of Friday/Saturday. Seriously, NBC, it’s time to shave the Biggest Loser to an hour and put something else on (preferably something funny).
“Parenthood” is not a 10PM show in any sense of the term. It’s a shame NBC decided to move “Chase” to 9PM on Wednesdays this spring following family-oriented “Minute to Win It”, moving “Parenthood” to Mondays @ 10 following 2 hours of sci-fi/fantasy young male oriented programming. Would’ve made much more sense the other way around.
Agreed. By placing Parenthood in a 10pm time slot, NBC forces the show to compete outside it’s genre and also marginalizes their target demo. Bottom line — NBC makes it tough on the audience to find and watch one of their better shows, while conversely pushing losers on more equitable time slots.
I’ve got a feeling NBC will call this season a wash while the brass regroups and readjusts to emerging new ownership and management.
I like Parenthood. My only gripe is they settle for mild when they should get courageous. I’m guessing the network is tasking them to make the show more self-contained like an episodic rather than a serial. This would certainly make it difficult to build drama organically when everything needs to resolved in one hour, but I suppose easier for the network to sell to syndication.
One other thing worth noting, Ron Howard and Brian Grazer produce this show. Shouldn’t they be familiar with the hazards of letting a network push a quality show into the wrong slot — evidenced by what happened with “Arrested Development”? Wouldn’t this experience compel them to go to bat with Parenthood?
Have never been a Gwyneth Paltrow fan, but that chick was amazing on last night’s episode. Stellar performance, stellar episode.
As Running Wilde is all but cancelled, Fox should pull the trigger and let the folks with mouths to feed look for other jobs.
Brick, I disagree. Maybe you’re just not watching the good shows. I watch Glee, Raising Hope (which I think is consistenly one of the funniest comedies on TV and i normally hate white trash humor – couldnt stand My Name is Earl and never watched), then catch the last 10 mins of Dancin with the stars results since the rest of the hour is a waste, then The Good Wife (also always consistently good!), and then wrap it up with a little Conan or a little Daily Show…and you’ve got yourself a fun night of TV and procrastination.
I like No Ordinary Family, but i catch it on repeats or hulu if i need to. I’ve dropped Detroit 187 – just lost my interest – it’s no NYPD Blue.
Solid flipping. Wwll done.
PARENTHOOD is NOT a 10P show! Whoever the hell ends up running the net but put this at 8 or 9p. 8p on Sunday or Monday. Save this show!
I really like Parenthood, although I see why it’s not a ratings-grabber. I think the writing and acting is really good, although it could get a lot edgier. Last week’s episode did make me cry, though, and it felt good. Love Michael B. Jordan, whichever Baldwin that is (kidding, I know).
If NBC is smart (which isn’t actually confirmed yet), they will do what they can to find an audience for Parenthood, which is a smart, well-made and entertaining show, one of the few on network television. But, this is the network that’s letting Friday Night Lights die and that show (coincidentally, made by the same people who make Parenthood) is a textbook example of a network allowing excellence to languish.
Parenthood is a terrific show but might be too much of a good thing. Just like Brothers and Sisters, it has has a very attractive cast. It’s much better written than the former but has so much going on it’s hard to embrace any one part of the whole. Jason Katims is a great show runner. Friday Night Lights was, is brilliant. He’s giving it his all on Parenthood but that might not be enough. Bigger problem is the show won’t repeat or syndicate so there’s no compelling reason for Comcast/NBC to go all in on the show.
If I’m reading the percentages correctly, No Ordinary Family’s decrease in ratings equals around half of Glee’s increase in the ratings. So it’s Gwyneth Paltrow’s fault. [evil grin]
Parenthood is the new Friday Night Lights, plain and simple. It’s one of the best written and acted shows on a network, but it will never get the recognition it deserves because it’s almost too understated and mild-mannered (I’m not saying these are bad things.)
I hope instead of completely axing it or whatever NBC decides to do, they at least give it a couple more seasons in cable/satellite land like FNL.
NBC, get your head out of your ass and move Parenthood to 9 pm. It’s a fantastic show: well-written, directed and acted and deserves an audience. These MBA cogs-in-the-wheel execs are clueless.
MOVE PARENTHOOD TO 9 PM!!! We all know that you idiots read Nikki, so wake up!!!!
I personally love parenthood! I was hoping that NBC would change its time slot to 9 or so. It comes on so late that half the time I have to watch it the following day through On Demand. Hopefully they get smart and do so… Instead of just canceling an amazing show.
Just make sure Parenthood returns next season. It’s a family show that, we as a family enjoy to watch!!
