EXCLUSIVE: Scarlett Johansson is in final negotiations to star alongside Matt Damon in We Bought A Zoo, the Cameron Crowe-directed adaptation of the Benjamin Mee memoir for 20th Century Fox about an American who moves to England to operate a zoo. Deadline reported on Monday that Johansson had the inside track on the role, but she and the studio were apart on money. Fox was also talking to Amy Adams, Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Rachel McAdams. Crowe and Aline Brosh McKenna wrote the script. Johansson has been on the short list for several plum parts recently. She is in contention to play Daisy Buchanan in Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby, along with several other actresses. Lionsgate also wanted her for Pride, Prejudice and Zombies, but that now appears in doubt.

She cant act! Matt Damon is wasting his time with this crap and working with ScarJo, that is pitiful.
She pouts, she sulks, she deadpans, occasionally she “smolders.” Has anyone actually seen her act?
The Emperor has no clothes, people of earth.
Scarlett Johannsen…no clothes.
Sorry, what were you saying?
Girl With a Pearl Earring
Lost in Translation
Love Song For Bobby Long
A Tony award for a recent Broadway debut
There ya go.
“Pearl Earring” — just because it was an arthouse indie flick doesn’t mean it was good or that she acted well in it. She was mostly catatonic throughout the movie, posing, not acting.
“Translation” — her best role, but more because it fits her “acting” style. Sulking and moping.
“Bobby Long” — that was a joke of a movie.
And if these are her “best” roles, that doesn’t say much for her abilities and certainly not her range.
The Tony Award…no idea. Haven’t seen it. Maybe she did OK in that. But yes, Broadway loves to throw Tonys at Hollywood actors. Keep them coming back and filling the coffers, etc…

Unlike Julia Roberts or Keira Knightley (to name two recent examples), her work was uniformly raved… even by the bitchy NY Times critics. Surely if she can make a DEBUT on Broadway and not only not embarrass herself but get rave reviews than that’s a testament to her abilities, no?
And you obviously haven’t watched the aforementioned films very attentively. Bobby Long was a not a great film, no, but even the numerous bad reviews acknowledged her performance as being excellent. And she did far more than just pose in GWaPE or LiT.
It is scary how this non-acting lady continues to get high profile movie roles- besides the fact she is not even a box-office draw.
The story sounds a bit boring, maybe I need to read a full synopsis of it.
Also she can’t act, maybe they just want her to stand there and look pretty.
How could anyone ever pick Scarlett Jo over Rachel McAdams?
First she should go on the new Fox reality show, “We Hired an Acting Coach.”
Damon has been shouting to anyone who’ll listen what he really wants to do is direct. So why did he take this zoo movie with ScarJo? I think he’s afraid to jump in the water.
We Bought A Zoo…isn’t that the title of Bush’s Iraqistan folly memoir?
ScarJo makes perfect business sense.
The studio faced the usual choice in leading lady:
Go younger & make money, or…
Go older & make art.
Not surprisingly, Crowe, Damon, and Fox want to make money.
Matt (40) seduces & fucks 26 yr old Scarlett in a damn zoo…in England…in an updated version of “build it and the animals will come”.
Forget talent.Though better actors, Amy’s 36 and Rachel’s 32. Paired up with Matt, the flick would become an “adult” love story set in England, appealing to the same demographic (30+ women) as The English Patient. This formula works, of course, but why risk it.
Just grab the lower hanging fruit of older guy-younger girl romance that will attract a younger, more movie-going demo.
Naturally, Crowe and Damon will talk “talent” when discussing their choice of ScarJo for female lead in “Zoo”.
But we’ll know the REAL reason that Hanks, Damon, Pitt, Depp, Clooney, Bale, DiCaprio, Butler, et al all get to bag MUCH younger women on screen:
Who the fuck wants to pay to see old people (35+) fuck!?
Dude you were spouting this line in that other post and you were appropriately smacked down. You obviously know nothing about this project and even less about how casting decisions work.
Go find a Pervy Old Men Seek Younger Women chat room and try your schtick there…
This is amazing news! It’s a shame that some if the other commenters don’t understand what this story is all about. This is a really inspiring true story about a man buying a zoo and what he, his family and the zoo had to face afterwards. It really brings people home from the box office movies that are about. Can’t wait to see it!
Clearly Scarlett can act. She has decades of experience and many awards nominations and wins. Plus, didn’t she just win a Tony? And Crowe is known for bringing out amazing performances from actors. I think everything about this project sounds great.
Scarlett Johansson is underrated. And she’ll be working with two guys – Cameron Crowe and Matt Damon – who are extremely talented and passionate about their work. She will do a great job!
Why would anyone choose Johansson over McAdams? I’m sorry I like Rachel too but she can’t pick a film to save her life. I have yet to see her display a ‘great talent’ other then in bit supporting roles aside from Notebook and Mean Girls. Time Travelers Wife was tragic, Sherlock Holmes she could’ve been anyone, State of Play was really about Ben and Russell. Red Eye made me notice her acting but other then that what has there been. Scarlett just won a Tony, let’s not even forget that she was GREAT in Girl with a pearl earring, Lost in Translation, Vicky Christina Barcelona, A Love song for Bobby long, etc
I am wondering why they paired Scarlett with Damon? There is a huge age gap happening there….
Maybe she`s learned a thing or two. ….give the kid another chance.
Hey, you might bump into something looking into the rear view mirror anyway.
