EXCLUSIVE: Screen Gems has locked Easy A director/producer Will Gluck and star Emma Stone in deals to make another movie together. Gluck will write it, and direct and produce, while Stone will star and be executive producer. They are working out the beats of the film but the goal of Screen Gems president Clint Culpepper is to have the picture ready to start production next summer. Stone will be free by then after starring alongside Andrew Garfield in the Marc Webb-directed Spider-Man reboot. Gluck will write it while readying the Justin Timberlake-Mila Kunis Screen Gems comedy Friends With Benefits for July 22 release. Easy A has grossed north of $65 million worldwide since it was released in September.
“Will and Emma blossomed in Easy A, which was easily the most well-liked and best critiqued movie Screen Gems has made,” Culpepper told me. “To have them want to team again at Screen Gems makes me the happiest and luckiest guy in the business. I think he was afraid I might pour a glass of iced tea over his head had he tried to go anywhere else.”
Stone will next be seen starring in Crazy, Stupid, Love for Warner Bros, and she is filming an adaptation of the Kathryn Stockett bestseller The Help for DreamWorks. Stone’s repped by WME and Raw, while Gluck’s at UTA.

Shouldn’t Bert V. Royal write the script? He did write Easy A.
Good point. I mean, yes Stone is absolutely great, but “Easy A” was obviously a case of Story as Star. It was a great story, it was featured heavily in the marketing; it was a smart and superbly-executed script, matched with the right star.
Hollywood meanwhile was shocked, SHOCKED, a movie like this could be a hit. This shit ain’t rocket science, Hollywood — pay less attention to brands and more attention to story.
Stop falling over each other in bidding wars over board games and toys and then acting shocked when smart, original, story-driven material proves to be a big hit with audiences.
And I know you’re looking for the Instant Hit, Just Add Water and Stir! that you can drop on your boss’s desk who can then tell the shareholders this Instant Hit will be ready to shoot next week, but yes, sometimes it takes a little time and resources to develop material properly.
Look at the Pixar model — focus on STORY, support writers, stick with them (and pay them) through the rewrite process. No, Pixar films ain’t for everyone — but anyone wanna argue with their b.o. track record?
But anyway, yeah, Screen Gems removes Royal from the equation at their own risk…
Seriously. I have no idea who this writer is, but Emma Stone gets credit. The director gets credit. This movie made 8x its bugdget because Bert Royal wrote a screenplay. You could have put any director and any actor in this part, and it would have gotten good reviews.
I read the original script. Gluck rewrote almost every scene.
Really? Then why wasn’t he credited?
I read the original script too, and take a different view.
easy to change the words around when the scenario is already set in place. try “writing” without an outline and it’s a bit harder. that’s why treatments get sold for a lot of money and witty lines of banter get quoted on facebook. plot points > zingers.
Will Gluck is a national treasure.
Um…Emma Stone as “Executive Producer”?
Clint is a ristaker and the best marketers of the movie he does. I know he is rough around the edges but I would want him and Strauss on one of my movies.
Why would this young talent hitch her horse to the no talent Gluck? The Easy A was one of the worst films of the year. A myopic self loathing film if there ever was one.
Emma Stone = a smarter, sassier, sexier Molly Ringwald.
Will Gluck = a talentless, wannabe John Hughes.
Someone make a time machine and bring back Mr. Breakfast Club to match the talent of this gem.
Ok, story, yeah, yeah, I agree, but this movie was completely wooden (with the 2 saving graces- Tucci + Clarkson).
I am sorry, but this script just did not ring true either in the farce or the smart division. Even if I think he’s a guy with legitimately good intentions.
Easy OUT is what I would call the movie. I really resented how all the hating happened from the Christians at the school. The point should have been that, as shown in Mean Girls, the haters come from all camps. Self-righteousness ill-will born of insecure groupthink.
Story lacked real bite where it needed it, was all telling and no showing. Stone, can you read this new one for tone?
Bert’s great. And no one’s writing young people comedies anymore. At least ones that aren’t straight to DVD’s. HIs play Dog Sees God is another example of how well he captures the youth voice. Maybe if he wasn’t with Paradigm this shit wouldn’t happen.
I worked with both Emma and Will and they’re both really good peeps. Congrats to both of them. Here’s hoping they make another good movie together.
Are really asking why the director isn’t credited as a writer? Do you know anything about the insane rules of your ridiculous WGA? And why any director who completely rewrites a script doesn’t want to waste her/his time and energy with their inane arbitration rules? Todd Phillips and Sorkin said it best: the Whiners Guild of America.
The WGA official credits could NEVER be inaccurate, right? Come on, people.
I’m sure Gluck did a substantial pass of the script. The whole movie is in his tone.
