Another week, another carriage dispute that escalated into channels being pulled from a cable/satellite system. This time, it is the Scripps Networks, including HGTV and Food Network, which went black on AT&T U-Verse at 1 AM. The same networks were also off Cablevision for 3 weeks at the beginning of the year as part of the two sides’ nasty carriage dispute. In the summer, AT&T U-Verse came close to losing AMC in a standoff with Rainbow Media but the companies reached a last-minute agreement, preventing a blackout. Here is AT&T’s release:
We’re extremely disappointed that Scripps Networks won’t provide a fair deal for AT&T customers. Our team has been working for weeks to reach a fair agreement, but Scripps Networks ultimately refused to put in writing key terms that had been agreed upon verbally, leaving our customers without a fair deal as our extended contract expired.
Unfortunately, this is yet another example of a network punishing its own viewers for leverage in programming negotiations. Scripps Networks is demanding that AT&T pay double what other competitors pay — including smaller-sized affiliates — and has yet to provide a proposal that gives AT&T a choice in the channels we carry and pay for, despite repeated requests.
Scripps Networks also wants this premium price for inferior access to their content for our customers on other platforms, even though other competitors get this at much lower prices. With such an uneven playing field, they are harming AT&T’s ability to provide customers with a new video choice.
We will continue to fight for a fair deal to bring these channels back to our lineup because our customers deserve the programming they want, at a fair price.

Anyone else get the impression that these are basically the same news releases just being passed off every time….sounds pretty familiar, we can’t pay that much because it’s not fair. I’d guess a large percentage of their subscribers don’t think that their monthly bills are fair, but what choice do you have?
I’m still waiting for someone (probably net based) to come up with a way for people to pay for channels one at a time.
We can barely afford what we have now, will soon be going to free tv with the digital box’s we bought 2 years ago if this keeps up. Who needs it? HGTV, & the food channels were some of my favs.
Shame on At&t U-verse I have it regreted it when it was installed and now those were the only good channels they had. I am back to my local cable company. I guess they don’t care about their loyal customers !!!!!!!!!!!!
I agree, getting it installed was a hugh hassel, AT&T had to come out at least 6 times to get it right and now we are losing some of our favorite channels-truly the only channels we watch consistantly. I am very disappointed in AT&T and am thinking it is time to move to another provider.
It’s about time the cable providers started holding thew line. I don’t want a nickel of my cable bill going towards HGTV, as I never watch it. Same goes for ESPN, actually.
It’s not just about you and what you want. It is about the masses and I would say that many individuals enjoy these networks and not being asked what they would be willing to pay to keep them on is unfair. If an individual just wanted to watch basic television one could go and purchase a viewing box from Wal-Mart. The truth in the matter is those of us who purchase cable TV do so that we can have the luxury of watching more than just regular television. I’m totally disgusted by this whole thing.
i believe the earlier poster, “art,” to whom you responded was advocating a la carte pricing. if so, i agree with him. i’d rather pay for only the channels i watch and not be saddled with the rest.
10 years ago i had 50 channels, of which i watched 12, and my cable bill was $20 a month.
now i have 300 channels, of which i watch 12, and my cable bill is $50 a month. every time the cable companies increase your rates, they justify it by throwing more new channels at you whether you want them or not. it is dishonest.
Enough with cable. It will be dead, dead, dead in 10 years. Welcome to the world on ON DEMAND!!!!
Because when the content providers aren’t allowing their content to be distributed, you can obviously find it in On Demand services?
Yeah, this is a perfectly case study for the need for an a la carte system. I’m sure there will be lots of “who watches HGTV?” comments. Well, I do. I recognize that it isn’t not the most watched channel, but I’d like to decide for myself if it is worth paying for.
I agree with Robert D about the need for an a la carte subscription method. Of all the channels 400 channels I get, I probably watch 45 at most. Why can’t I just pay for the channels I really want?
As far as HGTV & DIY, I watched them back when they actually showed how to do things, but those days are long gone so these channels are off my list.
I believe the same way you do also I’m tired of watching the same old re- runs over & over. It’s not a bad idea to pay for only the channels you watch but the only thing about this is if the cable company doesn’t charge you premium cost for the channel you want.
Yea let’s pay per channel good idea that way we actualy get what we will watch and maybe save a buck
I love HGTV! The beauty of cable, unlike network TV, is that it doesn’t have to appeal to everyone or to the lowest common denominator, So some people don’t like HGTV, who cares. Some people don’t like Spike, TruTV, G4, etc… To each his own, which is why an a la carte service would be great.
AT&T recently “lost” the Hallmark channels. I didn’t watch them but I do watch HGTV and the Food Network. Seems to me AT&T wants what it wants and does not even take into consideration it’s customers. I guess we could say the same for Scripps. If they are on our side how is it that the customer is the only one getting screwed in this situation!!
Everytime a network demands more money from a cable carrier who do you think ends up paying for the increase? We all do. We all did without these guys( HGTV, FOOD NETWORK,ESPN etc) before they came along and we will when they are gone. They will be gone if they keep trying to get more and more “blood from us turnips”. Someone will come up with a replacement for this entertainment at a lower price.
In the name of fairness, why didn’t Deadline post Scripps’ Press Release. I for one moment don’t believe ATT’s spin. There are two sides to this story and your reader deserves to hear both of them. Post the Scripps Press Release and let us decide for ourselves.
ATT U-Verse sucks big time!
I agree.I’m fall on the side of Scripps.AT&T IS JUST TRYING TO FIND ANOTHER WAY TO FORCE IT’S CUSTOMERS TO PAY HIGHER PRICES FOR IT’S SERVICES.
I agree with this comment. First it was Hallmark and now these channels. It is greed gone wild and the customer is no longer king in this product market. I’d like to see the Scripps Networks side of the issue. AT&T is looking out for themselves not their customers. Do you mean this had to reach the midnight hour of negotiations before anything could be done and then use the consumer to put pressure on Scripps to make a better deal? While we’re at it, my wife wants Hallmark back without raising prices and get rid of some of the trashy channels we are forced to accept.
Cable needs to be Ala Carte, I have 250 channels on Dish Network and watch maybe 20, why should I have to pay for ANY FOX crap just to get DIY? or HGTV? Let people choose at least group networks and let them choose Scripps (HGTV, Food, Cooking Channel, DIY) or FOX (FBN, FX,etc.) Then viewers will have to power to choose what they want to pay. Oh but that would be too easy.
What a sad thing for U-Verse subscribers that enjoy watching the Scripps Network shows (Food Network, HGTV, etc). Yes, I said enjoy watching. Subscribers decide what package they purchase by the channels in which are offered. I am an avid view of the above mentioned shows. Please do what you have to to get these shows back on U-Verse quickly or if not I will just drop my AT&T U-Verse and go with someone that offers your channels. Thanks!
I am very aggravated and disgusted. I enjoy HGTV and the Food Network. I just switched to AT&T Uverse, if I had known these channels would not be offered I wouldn’t have switched. Fix it ASAP.
I agree with this viewer. I will not pay one more cent to get the channels that I like. I will simply go elsewhere; and there are plenty to choose from. AT&T, you should listen to your customers.
If this isn’t settled immediately, I will go to a provider that offers these choices. I watch mostly the cooking channels on the weekends and am not happy I couldn’t watch them this weekend. I have been a loyal customer of AT&T for too long to have to deal with this.
my wife is pissed off….this collection of channels is all she watches. I’ve been asked to look at switching to Comcast….the only other choice in Villa Park, IL
I guess Scripps Network better figure out how to get in the gaming business because they are causing more folks to play games rather than watch TV. Plus I can always watch more YouTube videos, more entaining anyway.
Back to Comcast we go!
I SPENT 4 HOURS WITH THE INSTALLATION GUY FROM U-VERSE PARADING AROUND MY HOUSE WITH THE PROMISE OF THESE COLLECTIVE CHANNELS! SO I MISSED A WHOLE DAY @ WORK FOR THIS! IF THEY DON’T FIX THIS? I WILL SWITCH PROVIDERS FOR INTERNET,CABLE ,& PHONE! ASAP!!!! WHAT A DISAPPOINTMENT! SHAME ON YOU AT&T!
Yes if 4hours was all I spent, the originally install was 4hrs but in my case 1 week later I had tech after tech at my house for 2mnths !! One night my tv froze 25 times I spent a 1 week vacation with 4 different tech’s who did finally fix it and now I loose the only channels I watch !!! Comcast I’m coming back
The content providers, like Scripps and others, want to leverage their product as highly as they can. They produce some expensively made, interesting, and very watchable programs. These are the ones that everybody will miss.
They also produce some marginally watchable, less interesting, and cheaply made programs. They also run a lot of infomercials. It has to be in their best interest to wrap everything up into bundles or packages and push for the best return that they can get for the whole ball of wax.
An al a carte system would work, but it wouldn’t produce the revenues that the current system does. Would anybody actually “subscribe” to the infomercial channels? Only the “cherry” programs on the “cherry” channels would sell.
Let’s face it, if you want to take Giada de Laurentiis to the dance, you’re going to have to take her ugly sister, too. Like it or not, Giada isn’t going to give it up unless her sister is having a good time.
Laz!
I am disgusted. I am a Uverse customer who pays for TV. They have agreed on terms for delivery of TV – what they haven’t agreed upon is other delivery methhods. Give the customers what they paid for (TV) and negotiate other access separately!
I am wondering if there is some collusion between ATT and Scripps to get more money from the customers. We can’t trust either one. If these programs are not brought back, I will go elsewhere. Anyone have good ideas as to which provider is the best? I was angry when I lost the Hallmark channels; I am now more than angry about the loss of HGTV, Food Network, and DIY. I couldn’t care less about the country channel. What makes me even angrier is the fact that there was no warning that this was to take place. I will give them one more week, and then I am switching back to Time Warner or some other provider.
It seems that the most interesting programs keep diappearing from the possible channels available that have some legite intereset. The high price attached seems to defy the already high cost of entertainment, deminishing the pleasure of mere entertainment. During a time in which the common man seems to be holding on to their last dollar, corporations seem to be finding ways of taking it away.
So, in the end is one corporate headquarters against the other seeking the best possible profit from the pockets of the consumers. What seems to be forgotten is that without the consumer there would be no TV ratings, no gains in program popularity, and ultimately a loss of interest which could result in buyer disinterest. So where do we go from here? Corporations need to come together on an agreement that supports buyer interest and promotes continued use of the product that is valued by so many.
It seems odd that the most highly valued programs, those that have valid interest, are the ones affected, and not those that have a myriad of commercials which most consumers shift through in search of what else is available. Hope the “big” boys can work it out for as a consumer, I do look at the best value as well as quality of the product. Mostly, if it does not meet my needs or interest it usually does not get the vote.
Congress may eventually screw us all over, by getting involved in the carriage agreements. Time to write my friends in Washington:

TV will eat itself. The industry is so consistent and determined in shooting itself in the foot that you can’t help wondering whether they honestly think that file-sharing is the best thing that ever happened to the music industry. Can you imagine going to a store and being forced to load on other random products at checkout because they don’t sell well? I can, it was a practice in the Soviet Union during communism and everyone knows very well how that ended.
As much as I like HGTV (and I did watch it daily until today), I do think AT&T is standing up to my interests. I mean, the whole country just voted for “no more extra spending”, what makes the TV industry think they are immune to this notion? Enough is enough, the channel switch option is just a button click away.
ATT says “Scripp’s Networks …has yet to provide a proposal that gives AT&T a choice in the channels we carry and pay for”. Am I missing something? We, the consumers, who pay for all this, are not provided a choice in what we watch and pay for. But we are supposed to side with AT&T who think they deserve what we can’t get. At the very least when carriers are soliciting new clients, they should make available the upcoming contract deadlines with providers that might result in blackouts so we can make a more informed decision. Is AT&T, and other providers, advertising a line-up or just the possibility of said line-up.
Maybe when channels go missing we should get a rebate for the service interruption. That would certainly give the carrier a little more incentive to work out the problems.
This is absolutely ridiculous not to have these channels…….. These are some of my favorite shows!! PLEASE work it out!!
It seems AT&T Uverse can keep all the trash programs on but clean family programs like Hallmark, HGTV and the Food Network are taken off. We need a reduction in our bill. All I have to say is so long AT&T. Today I changed to SuddenLink Cable they have all these channels.
Sue
Hi,
Well, I called at&t and my hubby was sooooo furious so I had to do the talking. Anyway, we got a credit of 75.00 and 10.00 off for six months. The customer care service member was very nice. I could not take it out on him but meanwhile my hubby was loud enough
that the heard what was on his mind.It is kinda messed up that we don’t have those channels to enjoy for the time being and I do expect them to be more expensive if they do work something out. We are just going to wait 3 weeks for this negotiation between uverse and scripps network and if the price changes/the channels are no longer available then we drop at&t….very simple. No need to get all worked up.
I changed my service to ATT because they had the programs I wanted, namely Food Network/Fine Living. I will change my provider if these programs do not reappear in the lineup. The consumer should not be penalized because of a corporate dispute.
If Scripps wants to pull the channels and be a “non-team” player with AT&T. FINE — REDUCE MY BILL since the current price includes channels you no longer can provide. (breach of contraact). Of course the service provider (AT&T) will not reduce my bill, forcing me to look elsewhere — but all the cable service providers are in the same boat. The networks are once again dictating to the service providers what the consumer NEEDS.
You guys got to bring these channels back,I’ve been a u-curse customer for only a month 5 service calls and dropped channels? unacceptable.
