Fox brass are getting more and more nervous about the way Simon Cowell is conducting this controversial but lucrative 7th series of The X Factor in the UK before the show comes to the U.S. in Fall 2011. Viewers are ringing up ITV and TV regulator Ofcom complaining that Sunday’s vote show was rigged. They’re mad because Treyc Cohen, 28, was booted off The X Factor after a sing-off with tabloid favourite Katie Waissel, whose panic attacks and other escapades make for better ratings than Cohen’s serviceable voice but dull presence. One judge abstained after two other judges, including Simon Cowell, voted to send Cohen home, and a fourth judge voted for her to stay. Had that judge not abstained, creating deadlock, then the public vote would have decided the winner, which would have been Cohen (with 2/3s of the public vote). It’s not the first time that an X Factor judge has abstained. But the loser’s father says the ”fix” was in, telling The Sun: “Lots of things happen behind the scenes so certain contestants are kept in.” Ofcom tells me it’s unlikely to investigate. Meanwhile, it’s sobering to think of the amount of money involved. X Factor pulled in 14.9 million viewers on Sunday night’s vote show, peaking at 16.7 million with a 50% share of all TV viewing. This 7th series is expected to earn £72 million ($116 million) in revenue through a mixture of advertising (£50 million), sponsorship (£10 million), phone-line revenue (£5 million), the live tour (£5 million) and merchandise (£2 million).

Are you trying to tell me that producers fix outcomes in reality “contests”? Not in my entertainment industry, where everyone is nice, honest and moral! It’s shocking opinions like these that make me want to ride my unicorn back to bubblegum island…
I mean, you said it best when you described Treyc’s “serviceable voice but dull presence”. While a vocal powerhouse, she fell just flat for me week after week. The judges who voted to send Treyc home could easily say, aloud on live television, that they sent her home because she didn’t have the X-Factor.
And American execs shouldn’t be concerned, Katie Waissel’s spot on the live shows has created huge buzz in the press that keeps people talking/watching. Although they do take X-Factor a lot more seriously over there than we do with any of our reality shows.
Treyc has a great voice, but she wasn’t going to win. No personality. And Katie Waissel is more interesting, but sounds like someone is strangling a cat at times when she sings. She isn’t going to win either. Frankly, American X Factor will probably be more interesting than Idol has been in years.
Katie isn’t going to win anyway, and the UK voting public overwhelmingly do not like her.
Cowell can connive all that he wants to (and certainly, I’m not at all shocked that ‘reality’ shows purportedly about the public having their say get fixed to suit the makers, that’s old news anyway) but this particular series has been the most obviously shambolically stage managed farce.
Even more so than ususal. Although vastly below par contestants this year don’t do the show any favours. I would have though Cowell would be furious that it’s so obvious this year, but since he is still making money, it’s all good in the end.
However another source of anger is that the abstaining judge who point blank refused to vote was the ‘manager’ of both girls. Who, weirdly, gets paid a fortune to make such decisions if they arise.
If she couldn’t make the decision, she should be fired because she is incapabale of doing the job for which she was suppoesdly hired. Instead, she wimped out and sulked like a baby. If the arrangement was rigged, then Katie should be dumped and Treyc reinstated because the public vote was clearly against her.
Either way – Katie will deservedly get the boot soon. Her ‘performance’ in the sing off was embarrasing, amateurish and pathetic. It will have done nothing to endear her to anyone who was already not on her side.
It dont matter wever trayc isnt goin to win or not, trayc has got a better voice and again someone has gone instead of Katie. trayc should be up there on that stage and showing people that shes got more potential.
thats already known
Lol, thank goodness the UK still can have a scandal. Someone told me that Bristol Palin was in a gorilla suit and can’t dance a lick and is still on her ‘Reality Show’ about ‘Stars’ because Tea Party people want her to win regardless of her lack of star status and lack of any discernible talent.
We are soooooo screwed.
Im currently watching the Australian X factor as Ive just moved to Auz, the show here is as false as the British version even down to the host who looks as though hes twinned with Dermot!! Lets face it they know what they want before a contestant even opens their mouth. The public never get to see the mysterious polls conducted and the amount of advert breaks is ball-breaking, I just want to switch off. Im also dissappointed in Ronan Keating who is currently an Australian judge, he seems also to be playing the tactical game and helping send good performers home. Honestly, I think its been aired to long and they need to wrap this whole charade up!!
Every last one of these reality shows is fixed!
Why else is the extremely awful Bristol Palin still on DWTS?
Why doesn’t American Idol release the votes for each of the “stars”?
They’re rigged!
A bigger scandal with these shows is how they send home talented and skilled performers during the auditions because they are too “trained” leaving the audience with a lot of non-talents. Susan Boyle, their biggest star in Got Talent, spend many years in voice training and was turned away from auditions 13 times before she finally broke through.
Katie Weasel is a fame-hungry wannabe (as are the all). Her mentor herself told Katie she came across as annoying when she chose her. Wagner will outlive her and that’s enough for me. The problem is the moveable goalposts of Simon Cowell’s intent. When he wants to save someone he will ‘base his decision’ on the performance. Last week, when Treyc wiped the floor with Weasal, he ‘based his decision on who he thinks the public want’ (he means advertisers btw). The public don’t like her and they will vote with their telephones. She can’t win.
That’s not really a scandal as such. Treyc has a good voice but has honestly never connected with the viewers. Maybe with time she may have learned how to but I still didn’t see her winning anyway. It’s been a couple of live shows now and Treyc hasn’t shown much improvement.
Katie is terrible but she’s tabloid fodder. One thing you have to give her is that she’s really entertaining. And that’s why she’s still on the show- but her days are numbered anyway.
I’m sorry, but Treyc SUCKED. She had such a great voice, but she didn’t know how to use it, sung with no passion and was a horrible performer. Maybe it was a confidence issue? I don’t know, but its wrong of her dad (or her) to think she was voted off unfairly when she was constantly getting herself in the bottom two. Plus, she should feel honored that Cheryl (judge) abstained from voting because she didn’t want to choose between her two girls. Katie will go home next week. Don’t you worry! Then hopefully Paige, Mary and ESPECIALLY the entertaining but WTF? contestant Wagner! LOL
BTW…this is my first season watching X-Factor UK. Do they usually release the results of the public vote? How did we know Katie would have gone home by two-thirds of the vote???
The problem here is that there’s an assumption the judges are informed of who has the lowest votes and that we do not know. Also, the judge who abstained was the mentor for both singers and chose to not partake and let others decide/not play favorites. Had she chosen Katie would that have been more fair?
The X-Factor has always been set-up to allow the judges to formally choose who stays/who goes no matter what the public says. This is nothing new. We’ve seen this sort of thing happen on American Idol where the judges pick people who have a “story” or are “different” and leave them floundering on stage for viewers to question where the talent is. Then we see Simon make concerted efforts to imprint on voters how someone as bland as Lee Dewyze should win and push forward the influence.
And this type of controversy is what Fox is HOPING will happen with their version to get stories and headlines like this.
One question might be why the judge in question abstained. As she was reminded – it’s part of her job on the show.
Sure, it was not a great situation. But it’s still part of the job. If she can’t be professional and DO HER JOB(and let’s face it, such a word has little place on a reality show) then she has no place being there herself.
Cheryl Cole is not qualified to Judge, end of. Simon Cowell has a crush on her, Cheryl is a good looking woman, end of. Fox TV Bosses are too professional to pick Cheryl Cole on that basis, when there are plenty of English and American artists who wholely deserve to get that job. Tell me why it should be Cheryl Cole, other than the above reasons. I feel sorry for Simon’s fiancee and I bet he dumps her for Cheryl.
There is a simple answer to this alleged rigging, the public are the voters each week, when the vote is counted the bottom two who are left to fight it out should sing their final performance.A vote then should be handed to Dermot sealed in an envelope by the 4 Judges. It means that tactical voting can not be influenced by individual judges, such as Chery Cole reneging on her vote.
Lizzy, if you have been in Australia for any length of time, then you’d have known that the host is a very last minute replacement for Matthew Newton who had a nervous breakdown or similar & has had to be hospitalised. So to criticise the host is a bit harsh. I may not like him, but he is doing what he can under the circumstances. Ronan’s contestant Altiyan Childs is an absolute gem. Totally different to the usual wannabes. Most of the other contestants pale in comparison. Except for Sally. The other so-called ‘good’ contestants….like Mitchell,is that who you mean ??? Most are as bland as can be.
I watch these talent shows lots, mainly for the entertainment value. I know a talented singer who auditioned and she never got through. I have found that if anyone who auditions has ever been in a studio, the X factor will not put them through. They like to have the “exclusivity”. I work with a couple of talented singers who would absolutely kill it in the live shows, but they would never get through in the first place. It is good for X-posure but anyone who thinks they are going to win is a long way off. To change the subject a little, nobody has noticed that one of the lads in One Direction doesn’t actually sing, he mimes! Can’t believe nobody has picked that up. Congrats Kylie for the live performance.
Oh and go Wagner!
MY X FACTOR MICHAEL LAWSON 40 CHLOE MARCH
Cheryl Cole is an attention seeker. She has a criminal record for assault, she beat up a black woman and used the word ‘n….r’, that is why she was accused of racism. And accused again with the Gamu situation. Cheryl cannot sing or judge. So why is she on X Factor as a judge? Simon Cowell fancies her, his fiancee wants him to stay away from Cheryl, and my money is on Simon dumping Mezhgan for Cheryl. She’s been in a girls band and that’s it. If she looked like the average woman, she would not be there. She relies totally on her looks. Simon is pushing all the buttons for her to be known worldwide and his answer is to put her on USA X Factor. Cheryl is not as nice as you all like to think. On Saturday she showed her true colours in real trailer trash style. No class, no tact and no talent.
