EXCLUSIVE: Hot Tub Time Machine director Steve Pink will helm the remake of The Toxic Avenger, which he’ll write with Daniel C. Mitchell. Deadline revealed last April that remake rights to the Troma Films seminal title were acquired by producers Akiva Goldsman, Richard Saperstein and Charlie Corwin. That package was expansive and included the 1984 original, four sequels, an animated TV series and comic books. Corwin’s Original Media, which is a partnership with Dutch reality TV maker Endemol, is funding development of what the makers call an environmentally-conscious action-comedy. In the original, the protagonist is a mop-wielding simpleton named Melvin, whose trusting ways made him easy prey for gym thugs who tossed him into a vat of toxic waste. The transformation into Toxie didn’t help his complexion, but gave him rippling muscles to wreak havoc on New Jersey polluters. The byproduct was that despite his misshapen appearance, the chicks finally dig Melvin after a lifetime of being ignored.
“The Toxic Avenger is exactly what the country–wait, that’s not big enough–what the world needs right now,” said Pink, who also directed Accepted and whose scripting credits include Grosse Pointe Blank and High Fidelity. Kerry Foster, who runs Goldsman’s Weed Road, is executive producer with Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz, the Troma proprietors who created Toxic Avenger. Shara Kay is co-producer. WME made Pink’s deal.

Sigh.
I could see a Toxie remake working. Something between Kick-Ass and Machete. But the thought of this watered down PG-13 remake makes me shiver in disgust. An honest Troma hommage needs breasts, bush and blood.
why, why, why, why, why, why, fucking why?!?
Toxic Avenger vs. Jersey Shore?
If they go over the top like the original did, it could be fun to watch. They must go for the ‘R’ however.
The original Toxi is fantastic. A truly unique movie on so many levels. I can see the remake working, but only if they keep it R-rated and true to the original. If they dilute it with a PG-13 rating just to get a few more butts in seats, then I’ll cut myself.
Lloyd is laughin’ all the way to the bank…
Good on ya.
original was a rotten, smart satire of the eighties; it was way ahead of its time… hopefully Pink can capture this “Toxie spirit” and poke ribald, sly fun at our dysfunctional present-day situation…
I agree tough remake but given the names involved, if anyone can pull it off they can. That said, can Jamie Gunn at least be a consultant??
HTTM was unwatchable.
Don’t worry, Troma’s still making the low budget, gore soaked, hard R fifth installment of the original franchise, Toxic Avenger 5: Toxic Twins.
Finally, a project that gives Steve Pink a chance to fully exploit his limited potential.
can’t wait to never see it!
This is what steve pink follows hot tub with?? Is he insane? Wow…
The whole series blew ass, why remake a shitty film? Troma and Kauffman suck.
“Why remake a shitty film?”
Welcome to Hollywood, dummy.
Okay, so PG means we won’t hear anything about ****holing a blind chick, but they have to have a villain beaten with his own arm somewhere in the movie.
Dunno, I guess I’d rather see a might-be-good remake of a shitty film than a shitty remake of a great film.
That show made History, just leave it there….Please….
Can anybody come up with an original idea anymore? This movie will suck like most of the remakes do. The original was great and I dont think the remake would fly today.
