EXCLUSIVE: David Frankel, director of The Devil Wears Prada and Marley & Me, has just agreed to direct One Chance, a feature based on the unlikely overnight success story of Paul Potts, a schlubby British cell phone salesman who showed up onstage to sing opera on ITV’s Britain’s Got Talent in 2007, and left a hosting panel that included Simon Cowell and Piers Morgan with their jaws on the floor.
Frankel, who just wrapped The Big Year with Jack Black, wants to make this his next film to start production in April. The project was originally set at Paramount, which let it go. With Frankel aboard to direct a script by The Bucket List writer Justin Zackham, producers Brad Weston and Mike Menchel today will go out to financiers looking to secure production financing to make that start date. Frankel’s repped by WME and Anonymous Content’s Rosalie Swedlin. The film is a comedy that follows Potts from his origins as a chubby child to awkward portly adult with a passion for opera, and the various mishaps along the way that kept his spectacular voice a secret until he unveiled it one night before most of the United Kingdom. He has gone on to become a global opera star who tours the world and has sold millions of albums. The picture will likely shoot in Wales and it’s possible that an unknown will be tapped to play Potts, with established actors around him. CAA and WME are repping the project together.
Cowell, who created Britain’s Got Talent and was originally going to be a producer, has too much on his plate and dropped off the project, though he’s give it his endorsement. I first wrote about the unlikely pic project two years ago, and at the time, Cowell recalled the moment to me this way: “That particular day was one of the worst, the acts were just terrible, we were fed up and on comes this guy with a funny little suit and bad teeth who looked very nervous. I can remember looking at the other judges, with that ‘here we go again’ feeling. We had 2000 people in the audience, and I’ll never forget how much the room changed when he began singing.” If you think Cowell was exaggerating, watch Potts’ TV debut below:

THIS is a story I would love to see as a movie. The ultimate and inspiring underdog story. I want to know why he hid is talent for so long.
Thank god they got it out of Paramount. Literally one of the best scripts I have ever read. It’s surprising they went with an American director, but Frankel’s got the perfect sensibility.
will admit, never heard his voice before, but just played the clip. Got a lump in my throat just hearing him, he’s magnificent, but sadly, I’m not certain where the audience is for the film. I would happily see him in concert, but I’m not certain I care enough about him, opera or his story to see it on screen for 120 minutes.
That’s the whole point. A story of a regular person, who due to adversity was ‘DOWN”
And his talent made him rise above it. In this time of adversity, it tells you to stick to your dreams. They can come true……………
And you see a man’s life completely change in 5 minutes. This remains one of my favorite things I have ever seen. Hope the movie does him justice.
haven’t read the script, but feels like a little made for tv movie?
When I saw Paul on BGT I thought he was going to bomb, when he opened his mouth I knew he was going to be like a bomb,he was going to explode all over the world and touch the hearts of millions.Paul is so deserving of this and more, his life has been a total struggle but Paul has fought through and with the toss of a 10p piece lady luck gave him a break and said its time for you Paul to emerge onto the world and take your place which has been waiting for you.He stepped up and forward, since then he has never had to step back once his whole life has changed entirely, and it could not have happened to a better person,Paul I hope you will go on for ever and live the dream that you have held for so long, may you forever keep singing, don`t forget to come to Cornwall Paul, the Pasty is waiting.
There are thousands and thousands of fans all over the world who are ready-made audiences for this film. And there are others, everywhere, who love an “underdog succeeds” story — especially in these discouraging times. So I think the audiences are there — and some are practically foaming at the mouth waiting for it!
Wow, I’m not in to opera but wondered how they are gong to sell this until I watched the youtube clip. AMAZING! I have never seen it before. They need to make that clip into the movie trailer, it says it all. I was teary eyed and moved. What a great story and POWERFUl voice this guy has. I’ll be upset if they show anything but that clip for the movie trailer.
