The writing had been on the wall for the low-rated cop drama but TNT made it official today – Dark Blue will not be returning for a third season. The series starring Dylan McDermott and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and Warner Horizon TV never found its footing and its renewal after the first season came as somewhat of a surprise, especially after TNT picked up another dark police drama, NBC’s Southland. Dark Blue didn’t improve in its second season this past summer, averaging about 2 million viewers per episode. It was the only TNT series whose fate had not been decided. The others, The Closer, Rizzoli, Leverage, Memphis Beat and Hawthorne, all got renewed.

Yikes. This article is seriously THE FIRST TIME I’ve ever heard of this show. Now I don’t watch any of the renewed shows, but at least I’m aware of their existence and have seen commercials for them… But Dark Blue, never even heard of it, and I’m sure I’m not alone here.
Dark Blue ran 2 seasons and was a summer show. If you didn’t watch TNT during the summer, then obviously you would have never heard of it.
TNT heavily promoted Dark Blue for exactly 6 days before it’s second ssn premiere, and most of those spots featured Tricia Helfer looking hot and cop-y. The moment S2 premiered there wasn’t a poster or tv spot to be found. For a good reason. This show was built on the premise of cops going DEEP, DEEP undercover. Once a week. Literally EVERY WEEK one or more of the cops found themselves DEEP, DEEP inside a different secretive, paranoid criminal organization that never thought there was anything wrong with someone they’d known FOR A WEEK being intimately involved with their illegal plannings. So so dumb. So so flawed.
The funny thing is, had the show been a criminal organization per season, it actually could have been a fantastic show. I was shocked it was renewed after season 1 to be honest.
Up until a few months back, I too had no clue of Dark Blue.
Never heard of it.
I don,t understand these People Dark Blue was a Fantastic show
every time TnT comes out with a Good Show it gets Cancelled Just like WANTED that was a good show to.
dark blue is and was the best show besides levarage. now that i heard that there wasnt going to be a 3rd season thats just bullshit.dont expect me to tune in to (tnt) anytime soon.
Unfortunately the writing was on the wall after the 2 hour season premiere back in August. Ratings were really bad for TNT standards and it never improved. Plus, on the TNT boards, almost everyone hated the addition of Tricia Helfer. I liked the show, but I’m happy that TNT still has Southland as far as the dark police drama goes. RIP Dark Blue.

A brand new promo of Southland is airing tonight, per a tweet from Michael Cudlitz.
I have heard of it and even watched a few shows. It came on late and it was an intense show. It was a good drama show. To bad it did not develop a following.
Good show? All the characters just yelled at each other like that meant they were on the edge, they were tough. Get the gun! Find the suspect! I said decaf! And not to mention the guys all had stubble, the exact same stubble on their faces. Like ooh, we’re hardcore cuz we don’t shave. I mean that was great in the 80s on MIAMI VICE, but com’on.
This concept of every male having exactly the same amount of stubble, day in and day out, was also used on Lost. Bogus.
I enjoyed Dark Blue. It had an original take on the cop drama. I never could get into Southland. I kept waiting for Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Vizzini, and The Rock to show up
(i.e. Southland Tales)
Season One was actually pretty good. Dylan M had a strong ensemble cast. The crimes were cool. The cops were moody and mysterious. tIt was renewed in S2 because it had a culty following that really dug it and he series showed signs of gaining critical mass. But the revamp sent the hardcore fans like me running for the hills. I watch the S2 opener, wrinkled my nose and never went back. They tried to make it ‘friendly’ in Season Two, which was so untrue to the characters and tone previously established. The retooling made it worse instead of better. Its too bad. It had something at one point.
I’m disappointed to hear. I’ve watch both seasons.
Watched both seasons and really liked it too. Was looking forward to Season 3 and this is the first I’ve heard of it being cancelled.
I also watched the show it was good. Alot of action and so on.
I didn’t even know this piece of garbage got a second season, as I stopped watching halfway through the first. Horrible, horrible show.
So sorry to hear the final fate of the show. I enjoyed both seasons and hoped it would get one more try.
Strong show. Excellent writing. Will be missed.
Wow, i didn’t see the first season of Dark Blue and stumbled onto it last summer by accident. I was SO looking forward to seeing it again this summer. Dylan is hot and the show, although not realistic, was great – probably because it wasn’t realistic! It was good old fiction! I am disappointed to see Southland is thought to be better than Dark Blue…
It’s “Rizzoli & Isles,” not just “Rizzoli.” Jeez.
Is anyone ever going to notice that Warner Horizon is doing an absolutely terrible job managing its shows? They were the “studio” for both Rubicon and Dark Blue, and were totally MIA in both cases. If they didn’t have “warner” in the name they would have disappeared over the horizon long ago. Craig Erwich is taken seriously by exactly no one.
Other than Leverage, I thought this was TNT’s best show.
Ol’ Brucky strikes out again…
I agree about the stubble, I think there was a critic that pointed this out when the series started this past season, the critic stated that Mr,. Dillon needed to be informed that just because you have stubble doesn’t make you hard or even dark.
I also agree with two of the other posters, it tkaes weeks to months and sometimes years to infiltrate a criminal enterprise, and they would do it in a couple of days going by the time frame the series was using, and it was never really that “DARK” a dark drama about police would be where the cops themselves wouldn’t be able to tell if they were cops trying to bust bad guys or sinking into their cover too well.
I was a kid when the series Wiseguy was on television but Ken Wahl’s character on that series truly deep undercover, even his family didn’t know he was actually still a good guy, he was sent to prison as a dirty law enforcement officer at that is how they created the characters background from that point onward, I think his brother who was a priest, was the only family member who knew his character was actually not a criminal and wasn’t a dirty cop, it was all planned to get him setup to infiltrate criminal organizations, it could take several episodes for him to get into just the bottom tier of an organization, and it would take all season to eventually bring them down.
Dark Blue was very unbelievable at times, but it had some promise, but I didn’t get the addition of Tricia Helfer, and they just jumped into a romantic relationship with Dillon and her character after the the second or third episode. She wasn’t a necessary addition.
This was TNT’s best show wow cancel it? really?? so sad and depressing TNT why do away with the best show on tv… WOW FX has way better shows then TNT they should pick up dark blue. TNT goes for all the junk shows.
How the heck does Hawthorne come back???
Oh yea Will Smith has some pull – what a mess that dated old boring show that reads like 1990 when we were all in high school or even older like 1985 – it must be a favor to Will and Jada
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! Please bring back Dark Blue. I stumbled upon it during season one and waited for the next season. I watched season two too although it seemed to end too quickly. I held my breath waiting for season three and found out it was cancelled. What a disappointment. I know it would have eventually picked up more viewers. It had such great characters and the drama was very heart-stopping. I wish I could watch re-runs or something. Shame on you TNT for not knowing real drama.
Terry
Yes I agree, Dark Blue was a good show. I looked forward to it every week. Please bring it back.
…Once again Dylan McDermott is the “star” of a weekly ensemble cast and all the other actors can act circles around him (think The Practice). The Dean Character was especially good given the limited range he was written.
…The second season Fed addition was the beginning of the end.
Logan Marchall-Dean was awesome in this show. Was just watching Devil on Cinemax and thought I’d look to see when Dark Blue was coming back on. Can’t believe it’s cancelled!
Dark Blue is the best show ever. TNT needs to bring Dark Blue back it gets better rateings than southland, Memphis beat, and rozzoli. I hope TNT doesn’t become another NBC you know have a great show then cancel it for no good reason and then put some stupid show in it’s place. TNT needs to get rid of southland, Memphis beat, and rozzoli and bring back Bark Blue and pick up The New Knight Rider and Heros then TNT would be the most watch channel. So TNT Bring Back Dark Blue…. I’m just Sayin!!!!!!!!
This was the best show on TNT. Now I have no reason to watch your station. Yes, they should have ran a full season as one undercover story, rather than each episode be independant. But, seriously people how many of these cop dramas are that realistic. Southland sucked and got cancelled after the 4th episode on local TV. So TNT picks it up and its sooo much better now…doubt it. I really dont get who watches these stupid shows and how good ones get cancelled. I think this show never got the advertising that other shows get…that is why no one watched it. The only reason I found out about it was the first season was played right after Leverage. Poor marketing by TNT on what should have been your hit cop drama!
I am so disappointed that every time a low budget series come out and its about something different networks pull the doggon plug. Dark Blue was the bomb series and I will truly miss it.
I cannot believe Rizzoli…got renewed and not Dark Blue. I really liked that show, so too bad it wasn’t renewed. Interesting characters and didn’t feel like ‘the same old cop show’.
I have to agree that Dark Blue was so much better than Rizzoli and Isles and also incredibly better than Hawthorne (what a lame excuse for a show that one is). The first season of Dark Blue was very good but the second season less so. I was hoping that they would go back to the original formula for season 3 and see if ratings picked up. I guess that will never happen now.
