Tom Hanks was a frequent guest on Conan O’Brien’s late night shows on NBC and also appeared on Conan’s final Tonight Show,. Tonight, he experienced some second-hand Splash experience on Conan’s new TBS show. (Recall that mermaid he starred in?) Here are the opening jokes from Conan’s monologue, both about his new network. “That’s right – the whitest man in show business is back — on the second blackest channel on TV…. You know what’s great? Now that we’re on the air, TBS can finally stop running promos for our show. Unfortunately, that leaves an 18-hour hole in their schedule.”

Last night was good, kind of like seeing your favorite uncle at the family reunion. Tonight, however, had me really excited for Conan to be make and made me believe that he’s really going to kill it with the new show and bring back edgier fare like he had on ‘Late Night’. That bit with TBS S&P was classic, and the Taiwanese (or wherever it was from) news clip was the sort of absurdist, irreverent stuff that I love Conan for.
Then of course Mr. Hanks is always a class act and great as an interviewee, loved that whole segment as well. Overall a show that I liked much better than the premiere and hopefully is a sign of things to come and a tone setter for the TBS version of Conan O’Brien.
Hahaha! that’s how Conan’s show love by his followers and how his celebrity guest participates and cooperates with his jokes without getting mad and being down to earth. I really love his show.
Splash is one of my favorite Tom Hanks movies.
Poor Conan, it really was a crime against humanity to have him taken off the tonight show. Those who find Leno superior are obviously unevolved. I hope he can overcome TBS’s shortcomings. And i hope he can get some good guests, he really deserves them… A lot more than Fallon, and even Kimmel for that matter.
The king of late night tv is back, all hail the king.
Thanks for the cool share.
I loved that censorship bit. All ninety minutes of it. Only one question: how come Conan didn’t play guitar with Soundgarden. Did the RA of his dorm take his guitar away?
Tom is adorable. Too bad he can’t be Conan’s wing man.
This was a much looser and funnier show than last nights. I wasn’t totally sure I was going to watch it again live, but I’m glad I did. It was great from start to finish.
I’m with Coco, don’t get me wrong, but the splash is like a pie-in-the-face gag. My favorite Tom Hanks appearance on Conan’s “Late Night” was when Frankenstein was wasting a minute of our time, and stumbled upon (and pushed from view) Hanks eating an ice cream cone.
Was it just me or did Tom Hanks not call George Takei Mr. Solo…instead of Sulu, and Conan didn’t catch it?
Interesting.
