HBO is really coming back in a big way with Boardwalk Empire and Game of Thrones. Boardwalk started out slow, but has grown into a great show with great characters. Both shows will win many awards. Terence Winter is a great writer
Boardwalk Empire is phenomenal. Anyway, when does Game of Thrones start in 2011?
I read this pilot, and it’s one of the best TV pilots I’ve seen in a while…It sets up so many layers of conflict and intrigue (like a TV pilot should) and it doesn’t play TOO hard to fantasy to the point that you can’t take it seriously. After the decidedly underwhelming and completely overhyped “Boardwalk Empire” it’s good to see HBO has a quality hour-long drama in the wings.
If you still think Boardwalk Empire is underwhelming eleven episodes in, you must have the attention span of a gnat. That show took a while to fully establish the characters and conflicts, but it really gained traction by the fifth episode and has been terrific ever since.
I agree completely with Chris. (and no, John, it has not been terrific since the fifth episode, sorry.) Boardwalk must have greased some palms to get the unbelievable press and undeserving hype that it did. Completely underwhelming and way too predictable. I think the show has gotten better 11 or howeve many episodes in, but how many other series have the luxury of painfully dragging storylines out like this? And there has still been no “wow” or “amazing” moments for all this time. Anyway, I am hoping for better with “Game of Thrones”.
I read the pilot as well and was extremely impressed. Unfortunately, this trailer and another one I saw earlier this year didn’t live up to the promise of the pilot…by far.
Just now saw the trailer…Its awesome
Is the new Alan Ball series, “All Signs of Death” going to get picked up? HBO is going to have some phenomenal shows.
snore…zzzzzzz….zzzz
The last few episodes of Boardwalk Empire have been phenomenal actually. It started slow but has since become great.
Chris — Boardwalk Empire gets over 9 million viewers a week and has a score of 88 on Metacritic, so according to critics, it seems like the “hype” was well-deserved.
Just finished Book 4, which came out in 2005. Hopefully GRR Martin will get Book 5 out soon, since Book 4 ended with many characters in very bleak situations.
The “fantasy” of the books is very peripheral. It’s really more about the characters and the politics and intrigue and so forth, and so far, I’m encouraged by what I’m seeing from HBO.
And if the show does justice to the Tyrion of the page, Peter Dinklage should get an Emmy nomination out of this.
Is this underwritten by Taco Bell?
I’ve kept watching “Boardwalk Empire” – hoping it would prove me wrong. I think the last composition shot of the eleventh episode kind of sums it up for me: it was such a low point to end, it left me with no desire to see the next episode. And critically, I’m holding out for Emmy season. I think we’ll see which Sopranos alum is still trudging up to the red carpet come that time. And re ratings, where do you get that number? It’s pulling in roughly 3 million (and as low as 2.6) on original viewing, roughly half of “Walking Dead.” Most of the critics lauded the pilot, but trust me – there are plenty of people out there who aren’t deceived by a pretty greenscreened-in backdrop and an A-list cast. I sincerely hope people are still watching just to make it through the first season. This show (especially relative to “game of thrones”) just isn’t that good.
I have never been more excited for a television show.
Looks incredibly faithful to the spirit of the books (also excellent).
Will be can’t-miss, destination viewing.
Winter is coming, son
Wow. Was unfamiliar with the book and never noticed the sword making a “T” in the trailer. Until I just now read it, I thought the title was “Game of Hrones,” and figured that a Hrone must be a medieval, mystical icon of some sort. Oh well…
Game of Thrones is arguably the best fantasy series ever written (Yes, above Lord of the Rings) because it is a purely character driven drama. HBO was brilliant for picking this up and if Dinklage nails it, he might give Cranston and Hamm a run for their money.
CANNOT WAIT TO SEE THIS!
Boardwalk Empire has about 12 million viewers when you include OnDemand, DVR viewings. And it has become a great show with great writing. Critics like Alan Sepinwall and James Poniewozik have given episode 11 good reviews as many other critics have too.
