EXCLUSIVE: USA has given a formal green light to the Burn Notice movie prequel starring Bruce Campbell, which will be directed by Burn Notice star Jeffrey Donovan. The two will also executive produce with Burn Notice creator Matt Nix, who wrote the movie, and the series exec producer Mikkel Bondesen. The untitled two-hour film, which was announced at this year’s Comic-Con, will begin shooting in January on location in Bogota, Columbia for a premiere in Spring 2011. Burn Notice has wrapped production on Season 4, and filming on Season 5 is slated to begin shortly after the movie finishes shooting.
Here are more details about the Fox TV Studios-produced prequel. It is set in late 2005 and focuses on Sam Axe’s (Campbell) last mission as a Navy SEAL. It begins after a faction of Colombian rebels makes trouble for the locally stationed military platoon, with Lieutenant Commander Axe (APA-repped Campbell) being sent down to investigate. As the mission unfolds, Sam begins to uncover the dark secrets of the area, learning the truth about sacrifice, deception, and ultimately what’s worth fighting for.
The idea to do a Campbell-centered Burn Notice movie offshoot originated a year and a half ago when Burn Notice made its Comic-Con debut. “We saw Bruce Campbell as the Bruce Springsteen of Comic Con,” USA’s president of original programming Jeff Wachtel said. “We saw the spectacular explosive fan reaction and realized that, in Bruce, we had not only a great actor but also a pop culture icon.” USA executives decided to take advantage of that, and Nix quickly came up with the basic outline for a movie about Axe’s back story that had not been explored on the series. The idea was put on the back burner while Nix was busy with Burn Notice and The Good Guys until Wachtel made the surprising informal announcement at Comic-Con in July. Donovan got the directing gig on the movie after impressing USA executives with his directorial debut on the Made Man episode of Burn Notice, which aired this summer.
Could the Burn Notice film spawn a series of a movies or a spinoff series starring Campbell? “It is a one-off,” Wachtel said. “We’ll see how it goes.”

The more I get the happier I am.
I like burn notice and a movie or 2 would be awesome however I wish someone would make a movie for legend of the seeker
If someone made a movie of legend of the seeker and it followed the show, and pissed all over the books like the show, I would light an orphanage on fire, just to hear the children’s dying screams.
Also… yay bruce
Are you kidding. The Ledgend of the seeker was HORRIABlE, it reminded me of Xena, or Hurcules from the 90′s the acting was hoirrid, the storyline was a pale parody of the books, even given artistic interpretation
Wow!!! That is great!! Me and my group of friends meet to watch every Burn!! We will meet for that!! I would love to too see a Fiona back story movie as well!!! Plus a Michael one about before he got burned!! Keep it up guys we do not miss a show!! Keep making them and we will keep watching them!!!!
I’m really happy to hear this. I, too, am really excited to hear about the movie. The more Burn Notice, the better, and prequels to everyone’s story are welcome. Keep up the good work!! I’ll be watching.
I’m thinking a mini movie or episode about Fiona’s adventures would also do well with audiences!
Really? Did they JUST figure out that Bruce is an icon. Evil Dead has only been released 7 times on DVD and STILL sells. Amazing…
Bruce IS an icon.
This is phenominal, i am so excited it cannot be expressed with Words, like Anna said before me the more Burn Notice or Burn Notice related material i can get my hands on the happier i am. I have seen every episode 3-4 times and never get bored with it. Matt Nix is a genious and USA is the best network because they care about their Fans and this proves it by providing us with extra content like movies. All i can really say is MORE PLEASE!
I think the new movie should be called “Dead Notice”… just like Bruce said at the comic-con.
Burn Notice is a Great series. Best way for it to evolve to the next level would be for the Burn Notive to be rescinded and both Mike & Sam get their own series that cross paths occasionally.
Please no Fiona backstory – the pilot proved Anwar can not do an Irish accent – even the “Miami” and “Shall we shoot them?” lines should be gotten rid of from the intro.
shut up fool
anyone wanna get it on tonight?
Two hour movie about Sam? Where’s the Mr. Furley two hour prequel from Three’s Company? Thelma doesn’t get one from Scooby Doo? Where’s the justice! Snore….
Here! Here! More prequels nobody wants to see!
I love Bruce Campbell but he’s a little too fat to make a convincing SEAL, and a little too old too.
I have to aggre with you
Makeup can do wonders and Sam is a bit leaner in the recent Burn Notice episodes compared to episodes in the earlier seasons. He still has a few months to get in shape.
Are kiding? Bruce campbell is my favorite character on the show.Burn notice is the best series that’s been on for a long long time. Please don’t ever take it off the air.
I’m going to date myself but I worked on The Adventures of Brisco County with Bruce and there is no more talented, nor fun and decent actor to be around and work with than Bruce Campbell. I’m amazed he’s not become a bigger star than he has. He surely deserves it!
Now that was a great show (setting aside the frustration of constantly re-inventing the nature of the mysterious orb.) Fox sure has produced more than their fair share of one-season wonders!
We watched, and loved Brisco County and when we discovered Burn Notice, we were thrilled to see him again. We will see any movie from the show! We Love it!!
CAN’T WAIT— 65 year old, 60 lbs. overweight SEAL— STILL a LT. Commander— in Bogota. New Jersey at the local pizza joint maybe, Columbia with the gangbangers never. Call in “Retirement Notice”.
Are you kidding? Bruce is only 52. A couple of months of working out, get rid of the gray, and he’ll be great. My gal pals and I’ll buy tickets. Bruce is an icon…and still sexy.
I don’t know about this. I mean, Sam is awesome but I wanna see Michaels backstory! He was so badass in the pilot, imagine how badass a movie would be based on when he was still a spy and in full kill mode!
Bruce Campbell in anything. Yes.
Get him a guest role in the next Pirates of the Caribbean.
BRUCE!!!!!!!!
Definitely going to be watching this movie when it is done and out. Love the series, and I love the characters.
Bruce Campbell in anything, great..Love the Burn Notice gang…love usa series..the best series come from usa.
Sam is also ex-FBI. Maybe they should have made the movie about that as Bruce would be more believable in that role than as a SEAL.
I love the idea of a movie about Sam. I started watching the show because of Bruce Campbell. He is very talented. There is a great chemistry between the characters on the show.
Wow! The execs at USA need to get out more.
Seriously? The guy that runs USA didn’t know that Bruce Campbell has had an international cult following for decades? No wonder the SYFY channel is so lame as its been run by the USA people (or those affiliated with it for years). If Bruce gets his own series at least we have on the record proof that the guys at the top didn’t know it all along.
