The Weinstein Company has confirmed its purchase of Apollo 18, which Deadline revealed yesterday. Here is the press release:
The Weinstein Company has acquired “Apollo 18,” the sci-fi thriller based on the screenplay by Brian Miller, winner of the inaugural Astana International Action Film Festival screenplay competition, founded by “Wanted” director Timur Bekmambetov. Trevor Cawood is set to direct the project.
Bekmambetov and Michele Wolkoff, President of Development for Bekmambetov Projects Ltd. (BPL) will produce the film.
Set to be shot documentary style, the film unearths lost footage from Apollo 18’s undocumented and covert mission to the moon, revealing disturbing new evidence of other life forms.
Bekmambetov announced the contest this spring, in conjunction with Kazakhstan’s first film festival held in Astana, Kazakhstan July 27-July 1, 2010. Five finalists from the United States, France, Kazakhstan, and the UK attended the film festival, which was a celebration of international action films. As part of the competition, Miller was awarded a cash prize and a development deal with BPL.
The film is slated to begin production this December for a March release date.

Why are they lazily half-pretending this is real?
Are they seriously trying to sell this bogus conspiracy theory as fact? The “never been seen before footage” is already available on YouTube and has already been dismissed as a hoax. This is pretty pathetic.
Whats the problem then? Whats “pathetic”? Even if its been dismissed as a hoax, there are in fact cancelled moon missions with little or no explanation, and I’m sure there were moon missions that were not publically announced.
Why don’t you research before you make stupid comments.
Wonderful…once this movie comes out we’ll have to deal with tons of idiots who will be absolutely convinced that this mission actually happened. Funny, considering that when it comes to Apollo, I’m always arguing with idiots who are sure that those missions didn’t happen. Guess it’ll be a roll reversal lol.
“Bekmambetov, hired by Russia to shoot a documentary about the Russian space station, recently came across footage in its space archives that bolsters the idea that an Apollo 18 mission did, in fact, take place”.
I’m with Stu. Hey, it’s a great hook to hang a movie on (or it would be if the script was any good: it isn;t), but let’s be serious. This has been out there in whacko conspiracyland for a long time,
Nothing Bekmambetov hangs his hat on as a filmmaker is any good. He’s the ultimate Russian conman, and Fox are the perennial suckers.
Provocative? Yeah, well so was Big Foot. See. This is what happens when you are over-fed and over-indulged. You lose sight of everything. You lose sight of yourself. And when you look down, you aren’t able to see your own penis because your big fat belly is in the way. Provocative? Now, THAT is provocative.
The “Men in Black” helped with the cover up, it’s a fact.
So let’s see… Warner Brothers announces “Dark Moon” which centers on the Apollo 17 mission, based around the concept that it was the last manned mission to the moon… “found footage”… aliens on the moon… Cover up… etc…
And now Fox is doing a movie about the canceled Apollo 18, based around the concept that it really did go off… and IT was the last manned mission to the moon… “found footage”… aliens on the moon… Cover up… etc…
Universal? Paramount? Don’t want to jump on this trend?
One of the dumbest scripts ever. The coverage on it was terrible. Obvious a baby writer wrote it after attending a Robert McKee paint by numbers class.
script is terrible. really really terrible.
Ok, I’m willing to leave the debate over Apollo 18 vs Dark Moon to others. But….. WTF is up with the weird announcement with regard to dates?
Begin Shooting in December with release in March? Who works that fast? It’s a sci fi movie, which means beyond shooting (which always takes longer on scifi pics, as opposed to “My Dinner With Andre”), there’s editing, ADR, Foley, all of the extensive Visual Effects, and scoring, mixing, mastering.
Why announce 3 months when movies like this are rarely (ie, never) actually made that fast, unless they make 5 of them a week like old time 1960′s monster flics.
That’s just a weird thing to put in the press release.
SERIOUSLY WHY DID THE US NEVER RETURN TO THE MOON? AFTER ALL AS I AM OLD ENOUGH TO REMEMBER THAT WAS THE ORIGINAL PLAN. A BASE TO INHABIT AND A JUMP OFF POINT FOR FURTHER SPACE EXPLORATION……………WHAT SCARED US AWAY………………IT ONLY MAKES COMMON SENSE THAT THE MOON IS A MORE VIABLE AND STABLE AREA TO FURTHER EXPLORE SPACE THAN A SPACE STATION THAT WILL DETERIORATE IN ORBIT AND EVENTUALLY BURN UP…………….FIGURE IT OUT FOR YOURSELVES AND DO NOT BE AFRAID TO QUESTION,THINK, AND REASON
