HBO has opted not to go forward with All Signs of Death, its dark comedic drama pilot based on Charlie Huston’s 2009 crime noir novel The Mystic Arts of Erasing All Signs of Death. The project, which was picked up to pilot in July, was written by Huston, with Ball directing and executive producing. Word is HBO brass ultimately couldn’t find a spot for the show. All Signs, which experimented with smaller, portable cameras for a cinema verite style, centers on an inveterate twenty-something slacker (Ben Whishaw) who stumbles into a career as a crime scene cleaner, only to find himself entangled with a murder mystery, a femme fatale and the loose ends of his own past. All Signs joins another 2010 HBO pilot, Miraculous Year, which didn’t go to series. Of the rest of the pay cable network’s 2010 crop of pilots, Michael Mann/David Milch collaboration Luck has already been ordered to series. The Diane Keaton starrer Tilda is still awaiting word while backup scripts are being written and reshoots on the pilot are being done. The Justin Theroux/Steve Coogan comedy Documental and the Lena Dunham/Judd Apatow comedy Girls are in post-production, while the Armando Iannucci’s comedy Veep, starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus, is now casting for an early 2011 start.

Too bad, this sounded interesting. So in 2011, HBO will have Boardwalk Empire, Luck, Game of Thrones, True Blood and Treme going for Dramas. Seems like there is room for another hour long drama in there, does anyone know how many hour longs HBO likes to have on a yearly schedule?
Also, I’d love to hear what’s going on with The Long Fall and Mind Hunter with regards to their status.
And the final season of Big Love.
Did you make notes for this one a week in advance you fucking clown?
Hey, Nellie. Any word on the Molly Shannon series or is that still in development?
Curb Your Enthusiasm
Entourage
Hung
Bored To Death
Treme
Boardwalk Empire
How To Make It In America
Game of Thrones
Angry Boys
Luck
Enlightened
Eastbound & Down
True Blood
Big Love
For a network that only airs 2 hours of programming weekly, that’s a lot of shows for next year.
that lena dunham script was one of the worst pilots i’ve ever read. if it goes, someone make sure she’s not holding sue naegle’s kids for ransom.
i agree. the lena dunham pilot is the laziest boring “im rich and growing up” annoying writing I’ve ever read. Who’s daughter is she?
I agree. So far Lena Dunham has made a few interesting video diaries of her life with her family. She has yet to show evidence she’s an actual filmmaker.
JEAAALOUS (spoken in a very flamboyant tone)
Another ethnicly diverse cast thrown by the wayside. Let see how many more vanilla flavored shows HBO can cram down our throats. My hat goes off to Alan Ball for casting without predjudice.
And yet they keep shows like Hung… Entourage should have ended a two tears ago. How To Make It In America is very average.
Come on, don’t resign, just make it fix!
That’s a real shame.
Since HBO has passed, is there any possibility Ball could sell the show elsewhere? Seems like it’d be a perfect fit at Showtime.
I loved the idea of Ball directing this, but HBO seemed like a bad fit. Outside of Showtime, the only other place for this would seem to be FX. Sure, they canned “Terriers,” but “All Signs” would be, based on Huston’s novels, more FX-esque “tough guy,” and I’m sure with more than a little gore to make it interesting.
Take it to Starz! Chris will take care of it.
It’s disappointing to hear that this didn’t get picked up. I was looking forward to seeing how this would turn out. Great story, good casting, phenomenal director. It’s baffling to me that this and “Miraculous Year” didn’t get a pickup, but shows like Hung and Entourage are still around and some schlock from Lena Dunham looks like it will go to series. Well at least they didn’t go completely crazy and scrap “Luck” as well. With the new casting additions they keep announcing (Joan Allen, Michael Gambon), that show can’t help but be stellar.
