EXCLUSIVE: Bill Pullman (Ruthless People, Independence Day) has signed on to star in the upcoming fourth season of Torchwood as a regular. Pullman — who joins series stars John Barrowman, Eve Myles and the just-cast Mekhi Phifer — will play Oswald Jones, a dangerously clever convicted murderer who escapes his lifelong prison sentence on a technicality and quickly becomes a media sensation. Genuinely repentant yet boiling with lust and rage, Oswald gets caught up in a terrifying worldwide crisis. Torchwood’s fourth season will air stateside on Starz in a co-production deal with BBC Worldwide Prods. Pullman’s only major previous primetime gig was on NBC’s 2005 limited series Revelations. Michael Ausiello will be contributing to Deadline.com and Movieline.com as he preps for the launch of TVLine.com, a new TV-centric website from MMC.

Why is this headline news? He will not make a single person change the channel to watch that. He’s good when he’s suppose to be the straight guy like the president in ID:4 but misses the mark on the offbeat, like Zero Effect. The only other memorable role I cam think of was Lost Highway, which he was good in.
Why do people refer to the movie “Independence Day” as “ID:4″?
Was there an ID:2 or ID:3? It makes absolutely no sense. Yes, America’s Independence Day is July 4, but putting the 4 after ID: is completely ridiculous and illogical.
i have seen it when the movies announcer says ‘id4′ so calm down. lol
also its alot shorter than saying ‘Independence Day’
The Zero Effect was a fascinating offbeat quirky movie. He hit the mark and so did Ben Stiller. In Bottle Shock he delivers another nuanced and layered performance. He has what critics call range.
I wished the lovely Ianto Jones was brought back to the show and instead I get the Murderer boiling with lust (?) Oswald Jones…How tasteful..
Goodby Torchwood…
People like you (and me, to be fair) are what make internet commets terrible.
It’s because American audiences would not be able to handle the homoerotic scenes and the gay kisses that made Torchwood quirky and different in Britain.
When does the new season of Torchwood start in the states?
Torchwood begins filming in January; it’s rumored to air in July.
WOOH! love Bill Pullman, Love Torchwood! This news so made my day. His character’s last name is Jones, coincidence? you never know in RTD’s mind.
Way to kill a great show. First Mekhi only knows how to express one emotion Phifer and then Bill less interesting than watching paint dry Pullman.
Mekhi is a solid actor, don’t be stupid. And Bill Pullman has a subtle fascination to many of his characters.
He was excellent in “Bottle Shock”. When he’s good, he’s really good.
I don’t have Starz so I’m not going to see the Stateside version of Torchwood . . . and it looks like I’m not going to miss much.
Really looking forward to this. I enjoyed Torchwood from the beginning but “Children of Earth” was amazing! The talent involved in Season 4 has me excited about “The New World”.
I love Torchwood, especially the realy episodes. However, I don’t have Starz so I’m not going to see the Stateside version of Torchwood . . . and it looks like I’m not going to miss much.
Wow, is anyone here used to thinking positively? I think this is an exciting bit of casting! I can absolutely imagine Pullman in that role and I’m already scared of him now.
RTD just loves the name Jones: Martha Jones, Ianto Jones, Harriet Jones, Eugene Jones, now Oswald Jones – all part of the Whoniverse, all unrelated. A little quirk of his, nothing more.
A lusty murderer (but he’s repentant! LOL), an ex-jet pilot/president alien fighter and a pedo. Wow. Once you cross the pond, the IQ and tastes rot with each mile it crosses.
Looking forward to Torchwood on Starz. I’ve seen some of RTD’s other shows and I like them. Torchwood, when produced for the BBC was great. The fact that it’s now on Starz is great. At least the show won’t be destroyed by network tv.
I don’t understand what this obsession with Ianto is.The character was pretty tepid to me.People are acting as if he was the driving force behind the show.I don’t get it.
I’m more interested in these new characters, as I’m more interested in the actors.
I wouldn’t go that far. He was a good character. What I didn’t get was all the people accusing Russell T Davies of being homophobic because Ianto died. (which would make him, writer of the “Queer as folk” series, a homophobic homosexual and, by implication of the other main characters who died, prejudiced against women, the Chinese and short people with sticky out ears).
It’s almost as if people didn’t get the message from the last few times. First episode a main team member dies. Later on two significant team members die (well, one of them kind of dies earlier on but he’s undead so he ‘really’ dies later)
I mean people were more upset that he killed Ianto than the fact that he killed his own Grandson!
Sad that James Marsters isn’t back – missed opportunities to involve a truly compelling actor.
He might come back.Syfy just passed on his series, so he’s free for the next few months.
No, they already said he will not be written into this show.
The more I hear about this, the more I’m glad I didn’t waste money on Starz. The story is getting further and further from its original brilliant concept. The first two seasons were brilliant, saved money not bothering on the third, not even bothering with the upcoming fourth.
Good call. The third season, all 5 eps, were 1000x better than anything in seasons 1 or 2. Tool.
Um, does anyone really watch this show?
Yay? I know I should be more excited, and I really wish I was. But I can’t seem to visualize this series in my mind yet. I have no clue what type of show it’s going to become, because what I’ve heard so far doesn’t add up! An American TV “remake”, that’s also the original series, and will combine the “Welsh aspects” with the “new American setting”?? Yeeeeeah. You go try that. It might be a laugh. I just wish the joke wasn’t set within my favourite TV show of all time.
American science fiction and fantasy shows have a different tone to them. I hope Torchwood can shine through the veil.
Torchwood Season 4 is being produced in the states by Starzs. It is set to air June 6th. The move to the US for production is why the team is now US-based.
…..and until we’ve seen the new version, why are we assuming that the deceased characters will be forgotten?
Because they have already stated that they are not going to reference past seasons.
Wow, look at all the bleedin’ psychics in the comments here.
Call Torchwood! It’s obviously a rift breach!
Hmm…is he playing the character that was originally described as a pedophile? Looks like that got changed.
I guess you didn’t see Jennifer Lynch’s Surveillance (2008). Fantastic.
I think Pullman adds some credibility to the show, which has previously been for undiscriminating uber-nerd tastes only.
I suppose you haven’t seen “Torchwood: Children of Earth”, then. About 6 million Brits kept tuning in at 9 PM, resulting in a share of 26%. For a reason.
Will that Gwen woman have dropped 15 pounds and had her teeth fixed now it is in America?
Yes… reduce some of the best writing on television and the best acting anywhere to your objectifying women.Well done.I did not think Torchwood would appeal to shallow people.
