UPDATE: Warner Bros has confirmed that George Clooney is set.
EXCLUSIVE: I’m hearing that George Clooney is now in talks to replace Robert Downey Jr
in starring alongside Sandra Bullock in Gravity, the Warner Bros and Legendary Pictures 3D film that will be directed by Alfonso Cuaron. Deadline broke the story that Downey was going to bow out of the project because of scheduling problems. The plan at this point is to begin production in late April or early May, which would give Bullock the chance to complete the Warner Bros drama Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, the Stephen Daldry-directed film that also stars Tom Hanks and newcomer Thomas Horn.
Clooney will replace Downey in the role of team leader of a space station. He and Bullock’s character, off working on a shuttle, are the sole survivors when the space station is decimated by the debris field from an exploded asteroid. Bullock will carry much of the action adventure, a mother who is hellbent on returning to her young child back on earth. Clooney is working the space schedule around The Ides of March, the adaptation of the Beau Willimon play. Clooney is directing and starring alongside Ryan Gosling in the political drama for Sony Pictures Entertainment and Cross Creek Pictures.
Cuaron wrote the script with his son, Jonas, and David Heyman is producing. Given the hardships Gravity has weathered, this is truly a happy ending for the picture. CAA reps Clooney.

I don’t hate this. Actually kinda love it
Clooney + Bullock + Cuaron = better than 90% of anything else. Hope they live up to their tremendous talents.
ALL-
And this takes place in 3d with these actors. Please I love the both of them, but this whole movie will be like the one moment when
“Ted Danson walked into the scene unannounced in Saving Private Ryan.” Took me right out of the movie and made me aware I was sitting next to a date, I didnt want to be with.
Michael Clayton please re-consider.
“are the sole survivors when the space station is decimated by the debris field from an exploded asteroid” Haven’t we seen this to many times. BTD
This script is terrible, Bullock sucks, and I like Cuaron but this just seems like such a FAIL. Way too many people have said no to or backed out of this project. It’s like ‘The Tourist’ all over again, two “big” names that will churn out one big mess.
Interesting. Bullock is now the weakest link in this lineup.
The script is fantastical and 90% Bullock. Who is my biggest problem with this project. I would rather see Betty White take the lead. Glad it’s getting made. Just not convinced Bullock can pull it off.
Of course in movies women aren’t allowed to be motivated by anything other than protecting their nest (usually a child, occasionally a husband).
Even when they’re literally floating in space debris after a motherfreaking asteroid decimates a space ship, they’re still just Mommies.
Excellent point, HW!
Hollywood Rule: Women over 30 MUST display a Mommy Mindset-or she is damaged goods.
Whereas men over 30 are free to enjoy a full range of motivational mindsets-adventurer, thinker, healer, funnyman, entrepreneur, and yes, even daddy.
Bullock plays a Mommy-in-Distress in “Gravity”.
But you can bet that Clooney will not, in a million years, ever play a Daddy-in-Distress!
A woman may be an astronaut in a life and death situation in a damaged space station, but she’d better focus on her “guy” and kid.
You can take the astronaut out of the Mommy, but you can’t take the Mommy out of the astronaut.
Too much mommie factor and it turns into a soap opera in space.
Amen. The exact moment that EVENT HORIZON turned to crap was when guilt-ridden Mommie-Scientist started chasing the ill son-she’d-left-behind-back-on-Earth around the ship and fell to her death. Gee, did it ever occur to her that there was no reason in the world why her son should be on board a ghost ship that just reappeared around Neptune after several years? Nah–she’s a mommie, so that outweighs her logic every time.
This is beneath George Clooney. He should be choosing better material than this sad sack of a movie. If Angelina Jolie and Robert Downey Jr. (he’s using scheduling as an excuse) would leave this project alone then so should George Clooney. Sandra Bullock, I can understand, don`t watch any of her movies anyways (Blind Side=overrated).
George Clooney is overrated. His acting style is the same in every movie.
o brother where art thou?
Oh, ok, so the guy from Syriana is identical to the guy from Out of Sight? And the guy from Intolerable Cruelty is the same as the guy from Good Night and Good Luck? Oh yeah, and Michael Clayton, he has SO much in common with The Fantastic Mr. Fox.
Idiots need to actually watch the movies their trashing before they open their mouths.
Yes! Have always wanted to see these two together. Love it!
Remember the atmosphere of Steven Soderburgh’s mind bending “Solaris”,- survival situations can have surreal aspects to deal with, and the space environment is definitly hostile. There are some interesting possabilitys here. Check out “Solaris”,-it’s one of the best movies ever made, a wonderfull story of hope.
Everybody i know, and everybody you know, hated Solaris
I liked it, and so did most of my friends. A film only having niche appeal does not make it bad.
I loved Solaris, every Christian should, overcoming the world, especially death, to find your way to eternal life! Lovers reunited, never to be lost from one another again, AMEN.
Looks like George Clooney is going to be in a movie audiences might actually go to (and might be fun for a change too). The dude’s been either too political, or too dour in all his recent projects. Will be nice to see him in a ‘popcorn’ movie for a change. While I agree Clooney is still very much a movie star, people are getting bored with his constant, earnest ‘statement’ flicks.
I don’t know what rock you’ve been living under, but the last few years have seen far more comedic roles than dour dramas. Burn After Reading, The Fantastic Mr. Fox, The Men Who Stare at Goats, Leatherheads, etc. Even Up in the Air had comedic elements.
Knowing the script, I actually think this works better in the movie. Not sure if it will be a hit, depends on how they market it
I loved Sandra in The Blind Side, but I’m skeptical about her ability to carry this movie. We’ll see.
Gravity makes things heavy and fall…like tits & ass.
Hope this doesn’t apply to the film.
Then again, gravity keeps our feet on the ground.
Plus it enables lovers to fall on the bed together.
So maybe gravity’s a good thing.
“Gravity” is just another $10 million dollar payday for Bullock & Clooney. Santa’s come early-for them! Jingle bells!
“Gravity’s” plot: a rehash of several Twilight Zone episodes, Pynchon’s “Gravity’s Rainbow”, and so many sci-fi movies.
Really just “Lost” in space-substitute “space station” for “ship wreck”.
Hate to say it, but sci-fi and outer space stuff is BORING! We’ve got enough problems here on earth.
Does America REALLY need to see Bullock & Clooney in 3D?
Add to that the indisputable fact that both Clooney and Sandy Bullock scream “Boring!” on screen, and you get a sinking, heavy feeling, about “Gravity” and its prospects.
With these two boring leads and heavy storyline, might as well change the name to “Gravitas”.
Stop hating on Clooney. All of you only wish you could be as cool as he is. He is an awesome actor with an eye for good material. Not all of his movies are box office hits just like his pal Matt Damon. If all they were interested in was box-office hits, then Clooney and Damon would star in Transformers 3. Clooney’s role in this movie is small and only in the first act. It’s a three week shoot in the middle of his other projects. Besides, who wouldn’t want to work with the director that made the only watchable Harry Potter film (Prisoner of Azkaban)?
Payday for the actors project. Otherwise, zzzzzzzzz. Remember the brief onscreen chem of Emily Blunt and Tom Hanks in Charlie Wilson’s War? That kinda chem is needed here. The chem was the best few moments in the film. Give us Blunt with Clooney. OR better yet, give us Hanks and Blunt. But Clooney and Bullock? Pass.
Uh… no. I don’t remember that chemistry at all.
I do remember Philip Hoffman… but I don’t recall whatsherface at all.
I liked the potential pairing of Downey Jr. and Portman better. I guess this is nearly as good. I’m indifferent about Bullock but Clooney has impressed me with Michael Clayton and Up In The Air recently. Especially Clayton, it’s criminally under rated.
Sandra built her career on romantic comedies but showed in Crash that she can really act. George Clooney is just amazing and while he is a major movie star, it does not distract me from his performance like some others. This could be what The Tourist wanted to be, a top notch movie with major stars. It really depends on the writing ,script direction and marketing. Both are mesmerizing on screen. We shall see.
Totally on board with this assessment. Truly hoping for the best with this film!
On another note, I abhor the George Clooney hate. He has paid his dues. Yes, he is a physically beautiful specimen and comes from a Hollywood lineage, but he has paid his dues. He was not discovered in a mall looking cute. He worked his way up from small roles on The Facts of Life, Sisters and Roseanne to a starring role in ER. He is an amazing acting talent that performs above expectations in comedy and drama. He does blockbusters and small movies out of passion. I think Michael Clayton is a masterpiece. His performances as an oaf in the Two Coen’s comedies were nuanced and pitch perfect. The
suave Danny Ocean, I could go on and on. Not all of his movies are commercial successes but I have yet to see a bad performance.
I agree that Michael Clayton was brilliant, Clooney was great in it, and the movie was sadly underrated. I personally think Up in the Air was incredibly overrated, but Clooney’s performance in it wasn’t. Watch the last half hour or so of that movie and tell me he can’t act.
Cleopatra – Burton/Taylor
Gigli – Affleck/Lopez
The Tourist – Jolie/Depp
See the past. Prepare for the future.
For those who doubt Bullock can pull this off, a word for you: Speed. And two more: Demolition Man. People forget that Ssndra broke through with sci-fi and thrillers.
“Sandra built her career on romantic comedies but showed in Crash that she can really act”
WTF? I´m not precisely in Sandra´s team, I think she is a good actress who easily connects with the audience but I think most of her movies suck.
Anyway, the point is that her talent has nothing to do with the genre of the movie she is in. There is an extended opinion that an actress can´t be good or serious if is working in romantic comedies… WRONG. Julia Roberts is brilliant in PW and My best friend´s wedding, as is Cameron Diaz on this one, Reese Whiterspoon, Helen Hunt, the young Meg Ryan. Of course, we could talk about Katharine Hepburn, Audrey, Marilyn…
Some of the most memorable feminine roles in movie history are in romantic comedies… Stop trashing the genre! If only they write good scripts!!
Hah, hopefully Bullock will push Clooney into a pool, this time around
Promising cast and director, could be great.
Sandra Bullock is hot. I hate to be so simple, but she’s hot. And she’s a great actress. Ya, I said great.
