Cate Blanchett is returning as Galadriel in The Hobbit, which Peter Jackson directs in February. Jackson has also set Ken Stott (Charlie Wilson’s War) to play Dwarf Lord Balin, Sylvester McCoy (Dr. Who) to play the wizard Radagast the Brown, and Swedish actor Mikael Persbrandt (Day and Night) to play shape-shifter Beorn. Ryan Gage (Outlaw) will play Drogo Baggins and Jed Brophy (who appeared in the original The Lord of the Rings) will play the dwarf Nori, and William Kircher will play the dwarf Bifur.
On Blanchett’s return as the ethereal Lady of Lothlorien, Jackson said: “Cate if one of my favorite actors to work with and I couldn’t be more thrilled to have her reprise the role she so beautifully brought to life in the earlier films.”
Jackson–who wrote the script with Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens and Guillermo del Toro–previously announced that Martin Freeman will play Bilbo Baggins. Blanchett likely won’t be the only returning cast member. Ian McKellen is expected to reprise Gandalf and Andy Serkis is expected to bring back Gollum. The film’s being made by New Line as a co-production between Warner Bros and MGM.

Any news on whether David Tennant will be cast in a role? Updated rumors/whispers would be appreciated…
Excellent. Now how about a cameo by Christopher Lee for the Great Council of The Wizards sequence.
Indeed. That would be nice, even if its only for 2 minutes.
YES! I am so excited things are finally looking up!!! Galadriel wasn’t in the actual book of The Hobbit but I trust PJ and I’m excited!!!
@XYZ I think Christopher Lee might still be pissed off about some his scenes being cut from the theatrical versions.
Like, ALL of his scenes from Return of the King? The one that actually won the best-picture Oscar? Yeah, I would bet he’s not a happy camper about that.
Well, he was put back in for the extended cuts.
Lee is reportedly too frail to make the journey to New Zealand.
What about Hugo Weaving? It’s disconcerting to see his name consistently absent from these cast announcements. It would be a shame if they had to re-cast Elrond.
No Elves of color? No Dwarves of diversity? At least the Wizard is gay.
Cate Blanchett’s character is an elf, and elves do not age – but the actress is now 10 years older. Isn’t that going to be a problem? Or are they going to use some computer wizardry to erase the wrinkles? Also, is anyone else feeling twitchy there has been no announcement on Ian McKellen’s return? Has his deal fallen through?
Called make-up. I hear they’re quite good at it in the film industry.
Galadriel? In The Hobbit? What are they doing to do, have her stand in for the elf king of Mirkwood? No no no no no no no!
I don’t know how many times I have to say this. They are adding parts in from the Appendices of The Lord of the Rings. You know, the fine print in the back of the big giant book. That means stuff Tolkien wrote that was not entirely fleshed out into a publishable state, but that he, the author, said happened in conjunction with the timeline of both books. It’s all canon.
Stop having a hissy fit. If you’d read them, or cared half as much about the integrity of the story as you’re carrying on about, you’d take a little time to research this project just a little before you make an ass of yourself. Even Wikipedia could tell you the gist of it.
Really excited that Sylvester McCoy is a part of this. He was an underrated Doctor, and was OUTSTANDING as the Fool in King Lear.

What, exactly, is Galadriel doing in “The Hobbitt”? This is what fans hate to happen…studios taking liberties with literary works when converting them to motion pictures. This is retarded.
Wow MARK if tolkien were alive I’m sure you’d blow him. you relax now
