The pressure on CNN’s new primetime anchor Piers Morgan to deliver ratings can’t be bigger – according to preliminary Nielsen estimates, 2010 will mark CNN’s lowest rated year since at least 1997 in total viewers and the target demographic of adults 25-54 after the beleaguered news network posted steep double-digit year-to-year declines. More bad news for new CNN chief Ken Jautz: In 2010, MSNBC will beat CNN in primetime for the first time ever in total viewers and for the second consecutive year in adults 25-54. (MSNBC will also log its first ever demo victory over CNN in total day.) Overall, Fox News Channel was once again head and shoulders above the cable news competition, drawing more viewers than its three competitors, CNN, MSNBC and HLN, combined. With its established programs sliding and new shows, most recently Parker Spitzer, fizzling, CNN posted the sharpest ratings declines, down 34% in prime time from 2009. Its sibling network HLN was also deep in the double-digit drop area while Fox News and MSNBC posted modest single-digit declines. Here are the numbers:

Please? What world does CNN live in?? Spitzer not only broke the law but disgraced himself and the elected position he once held at taxpayer’s expense and we should NOW listen to anything he has to say? Sucking off prostitutes doesn’t lead to journalistic credability. Who I feel soory for is Parker, who can barely stand to be there..She in turn, seems to have some class….Where is the insight on this one?
Funny, I ask myself the same of practically every anchor on FOX News.
The issue at hand, is that CNN hasn’t learned to be bombastic and outrageous. Either appeal to the fanatic left, or the crypto-fascist far-right. People like Wolf Blitzer are putting people to sleep.
You pretty much hit the nail on the head.CNN anchors aren’t far right or far left, so their shows don’t have any built in partisan veiwership like MSN or Fox News. Not to mention, there isn’t much manufacture drama or bimbos like some other networks, so the shows come off as bland to the viewers who want entertainment packaged as news.
Liberals are always confused by the Fox ratings. Outside of LA and SF and NYC the number of liberals in the US is small. Macro analysis always comes back to roughly 19% of the citizens consider themselves liberal. That translates into ratings. It’s just math.
When you exclusively represent a much smaller segment of the population, which is already fragmented by a myriad of choices, it only goes to figure their numbers would drop precipitously. Piers will not help.
This is easily remedied. Just hire some buxom blonde bimbos to deliver lies – I mean news – in glitzy flag-wrapped soundbites, similar to Faux News. The Useful Idiots will eat it up with a spoon.
They tried that. Only they used brunets. Didn’t work. CNN just kept sinking lower and lower and lower. Meanwhile the official line was: “Everything is OK. It’s all part of our plan! There is nothing to worry about. Why are you even talking about this? Everything is going according to plan!” It took them forever to clean out the old management. Why the hell did it take them so long? It was completely baffling how ratings kept reaching new lows and yet the management skated by with no hint that their jobs were in any danger.
Fox News dominates because it understands most people do not live in New York and have a different value system. They want to hear both sides of a story, not the party line. MSNBC has absolutely no credibility. CNN had some credibility with Glenn Beck and Lou Dobbs, to balance things out, but they’re long gone. Anderson Cooper is like all of the other network anchors – - an elite, east coast, guilt-ridden liberal who thinks by spinning the news in a politically correct way he is being sincere and honest. BS. Report the truth and the viewer will decide.
Amen. But why get in the way of the competition while it’s committing suicide?
I can’t stop laughing at the fox news gives both sides of the story line.
Fox DOES give both sides of the story: the “right” and the “far right”.
If that’s true how come Fox doesn’t beat teh network news?
“Report the truth and the viewer will decide.” Really? Well, Fox doesn’t do that and their it works out pretty well for them… like for example how they ideologically skew debate on issues e.g., using of Frank Luntz-approved buzzwords on health care

or climate change
[http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/12/15/AR2010121506871.html ] or that University of Maryland study showing Fox News viewers are significantly more misinformed than news consumers who rely on nearly any other source.
Right. They’re ratings are high (relatively speaking…like those number are great even for basic cable, see SpongeBob for a basic cable ratings giant), because of a fired-up increasingly senior-age conservative base audience that likes to tune in to the echo chamber pacifying them with selective reinforcement that their world view is the bestest and rightest ever instead of processing argument elsewhere that might challenge it with, y’know, facts.
No surprise at all…how about the recent articles about how Piers Morgan said he won’t have Madonna on his show because she is “too boring”…honestly, who cares, it’s not like she would bring in much ratings anyways, it was was a weak attempt at getting some headlines.
Republicans are funny.
Fox News wins because they don’t treat normal people as some sort of ignorant fool who just needs to be told what the demoscum wants then to know. Every anchor on CNN acts like they are the pinacle of knowledge and the viewer must be told what to think because we’re all just confused and don’t “understand” the issues as well as our Dear Leader because he went to Harvard.
The average age of the Fox News Viewer = Dirt.
You’re absolutely cOrrect! I’m so tired of the condescending, We’re so smart AND YOU’RE NOT…..SO HERE’S THE NEWS IDIOTS! Fox has “thinking peoples” newscasts!”…..If we’re gonna be forced fed CNN’s news at least find information people don’t already know. I’ts insulting and condescending!
The only time that CNN dominates is when they cover a presidential election; their coverage is fantastic with “Election Center” and all the respective pundits. Otherwise, Fox News is edgier and more in tune with the rest of the country.
“…and more in tune with the rest of the country”…Jesus, I hope not.
Didn’t Fox have higher ratings last election? I’m sure it did.
And it will only continue to fall. I enjoy watching a few shows on CNN but for the most part, I avoid it. Parker Spitzer is a complete failure, who knew you could have lower ratings than Rick Sanchez? And Piers will just continue that trend.
And look! More Fox News haters! PLEASE keep on posting and making fools of yourselves, it’s funny to watch.
So if someone doesn’t like fox news, then they are making a fool of themsevles? Tribunal…it’s really a stupid argument. If you are conservative, then you are going love fox news and hate msnbc. If you are a liberal, then you are going to hate fox news and love msnbc. It’s just an opinion. The only one here making a fool our of themselves is you.
last weekend i had cnn on. they were interviewing comedian steve harvey about what it is to be a man and to be a husband. it was stunningly lame. i couldnt believe that could be a story on cnn. what the hell are they doing over there? just get serious guys.
America is the greying race-
“Shame on you if you’re not a liberal when you’re younger…shame on you if you’re not a conservative when you’re older”
(The Boomers) I was so much younger then I’m older than that now…
Why would I watch Comrades News Network?
And please, CNN fans, keep telling us how much smarter and finer human beings you are than everyone else. It’s so appealing & persuasive.
Blondes have more fun… reading their ratings.
Ratings don’t mean it’s a better product. All Ratings prove is that more people watch their show and like their product. It does not make what they say any more true than a blogger or a pundit or a newspaper.
Case in point…Ruben Studdard won Idol, Idol won in ratings, Big Momma’s House 2 won Box Office race one weekend. Out of Africa beat The Color Purple for best picture.
Out of all the networks and 24 hour “news” channels I consider CNN the most impartial…Ok, Maybe BBC news is #1 in that regards. But I would rather watch CNN than Fox and MSNBC. While CNN might be boring and droll you will get NEWS and no opinions and half truths that the other stations tend to throw out there to gain their viewers.
CNN HAS BECOME A BORING NEWS STATION. IT RERUNS THE SAME THING EACH DAY. WHEN THEY GET REPORTS FROM OUTSIDE THE COUNTRY THEY GET LOCAL REPORTERS ON THE PHONE MOST OF THE TIME. THE NETWORK IS NOT MAKING ITSELF RELEVENT ANY LONGER. THEY NEED A TOP TO BOTTOM REDO WITH A DYNAMIC GROUP OF REPORTERS AND EDITORS. THE NETWORK PAYS VIRTUALLY NO ATTENTION TO EVENTS OUT SIDE THE U.S. THEY ARE NOT DOING ANYTHING THAT MAKES THEIR BRAND STAND OUT. CNN ALSO NEEDS TO
FIND A WAY TO MOVE INTO THE SOCIAL NETWORKING OF THEIR PROGRAMING. THAT STARTS WITH BEING MORE HIP AND DELIVERING BETTER PRODUCT.
CNN has some notable upfront problems with selecting Piers Morgan to replace King. The one to one interview format in general has grown tired and passe’. King was the king of lobbing puffball questions, thus many potential guests had no reservations about going on the show. Piers has vowed to be a tougher interviewer and that could scare off some his guest pool. I do like the idea that Piers will not be talking with self promoters like Madonna.
Hiring British national and heavily accented Piers Morgan to replace Larry King is a B-I-G mistake. Americans will not tune in nightly to listen to a foreign accent. period.
Also he is not a citizen of our country. Who is he to hold court over discussions of our business? Larry doesn’t do just celebrity interviews…there has to be a mix…
Christiane Amanpour is a bust as host of ‘This Week’ for all these reasons and I predict Piers will follow…
CNN delivers news with a world view. Fox has an American perspective. That’s the reason most of us aren’t interested in watching CNN.
Funnily enough, CNN.com posted a video of their Headline News on the most provocative celebrities of 2010. It came down to Lady Gaga and Miley Cyrus. And Lady Gaga won. This was posted on December 14th, four days after Miley Cyrus’ bong video! But the report was already in the can, and they refused to update it. So they proved to be wrong. Saved money but made CNN look ridiculous.
Fox News crushes CNN for one reason: It has an media echo chamber and CNN doesn’t.
Fox ratings are pumped up daily by the right-wing media echo chamber that shouts down anything CNN says and shouts up EVERYTHING Fox hosts say.
What Fox says is echoed daily by… right-wing radio(Rush, Hannity, Beck, O’Reilly, et al), right-wing TV(CNBC, Bloomberg, etc), and various private right-wing special groups, newspapers, magazines, etc.
Poor CNN has no media echo chamber. Its hosts speak alone and lack any meaningful support in radio, TV, newspapers, etc. What CNN says today is forgotten tomorrow. No one echoes its hosts.
Fox news is a success because its founders knew, right from the get-go, that just about every news story has a political slant. They chose to make their news with a right-wing slant.
CNN chose to make their news without any discernible slant.
Fox News triumphs over CNN and every other competitor becuase it clearly communicates its political bias. And the amazingly coordinated right-wing echo chamber made Fox News the face of its movement.
CNN tried to make news apolitical. They lost.
Fox has now trained the majority of Americans to identify news with politics, and politics with news.
Advice to the next CNN: Choose a side and stick with it, and wrap your news around your chosen side every chance you get.
Sad thing is, Fox has done such a great job merging “news”, “fair and balanced”, and “right wing Republican”, that in America today, nobody but Fox does news better-or will, anytime soon.
CNN is so left wing that Fox marched right in to the market with only a slogan….as soon as they said “fair and balanced” a large number of Americans were aboard their new ship.
As has been said CNN is elitist and many of their newscasters are self-important, know-it-alls…
Fox has changed and has become a loud voice for the right wing. Are they ‘fair and balanced’? Nope. But don’t pretend CNN is innocent. They are commies.
Hollywood insiders trying to explain Fox News is laughable because Hollywood is mostly left-wing, bleeding liberals.
Conservative Americans realize that communism doesn’t work but the Judaic/Christian principles of capitalism do. PERIOD.
