Comcast today confirmed what observers had been predicting for awhile: that the merger with NBC Universal won’t be completed by the end of this year as Comcast had hoped because of a delay in the regulatory approval process.
“We believe the FCC and the DOJ continue to make substantial process toward approval of our transaction,” Comcast’s VP government communications Sena Fitzmaurice said in a statement. “However because of the lead time required to prepare for a close, it now appears that we will not be able to close the transaction with GE relating to NBC Universal by year-end. We have notified our transition teams that there will not be a December 31 closing. We believe the regulatory review puts us on track for a closing in January 2011. We are appreciative of the hard work by the FCC and DOJ staff and by our own transition teams, and look forward to completing the process early next year.”
The Comcast-NBCU deal has drawn an enormous level of scrutiny. WGAW yesterday called it “the most immediate threat to the future of media.” “This merger must not be approved without strong conditions that protect competition, diversity, and independence,” the guild said.

So the SyFy Channel will suck a little longger?
Unless they peed on Obama’s shoes this is all a charade. As long as NBC remains the DNC lapdog they will get away with anything they want.
WGAW sees this as the “most immediate threat to the future of media”? I guess they failed to hear Senator Jay Rockefeller (D-WVA) urge the FCC to shut down Fox News and MSNBC. Seems to me THAT is the greatest threat to media and to free speech. Imagine a government agency shutting down media because it doesn’t like the way that media speaks. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WhwPkQ3jKWY&feature=player_embedded
A slight setback. Don’t know to what extent Comcast’s presumptuous attitude not helped matter.
So does this mean it wont be finalized and closed until January or unitl March?
And when will the impending layoffs happen that will be the result of this deal?
I hope the deal goes through. Personally I like seeing the rich get richer. I also like the idea that the rules that apply to every other corporation and monopolies, don’t apply to Comcast/NBCU.
Also, what’s so wrong with a giant corporation controlling content, the release of content, the production of content and the content of content.
Mostly I want this deal to go through because I like evil dictators. I like a big villainous empire. They provide a target for cynicism, bitterness, resentment and hatred. But mostly, their empire indirectly and ironically casts the spotlight on the underdog.
Please put this deal through DOJ and FCC and betray your true selves.
