Insiders close to Marvel and Robert Downey Jr, who has director approval on Iron Man 3, confirm that Jon Favreau won’t direct this next installment of the franchise. Granted there’s no script yet. And few helmers do what Sam Raimi (Spider-Man) and Gore Verbinski (Pirates Of The Caribbean) did: stick around for a trilogy. Favreau just wrapped Cowboys & Aliens and is about to embark on
Disney’s Magic Kingdom and “is excited about the opportunity to go do his own thing” while Kevin Feige as the ultimate custodian of Marvel’s Iron Man franchise “sees it as an opportunity to bring some more fire to the franchise”. Favreau is still on board to exec produce The Avengers which Joss Whedon is directing. Favreau just negotiated a Disney development deal but the director had been expected to re-team with RDJr for the third Iron Man, one of the Marvel films bought out from Paramount so Disney could distribute. Vulture got there first.

Man, Faverau stinks.
awww he did such a good job on the 2. This is very sad
If it’s anything like IM2 then it won’t matter who directs it b/c it’ll be a complete piece of shit.
I agree, the second film was bad.
why the hell does Downey have director approval?
Isn’t it obvious? Downey has director approval because he is an A List star now, who can make such demands.
But will he return as Happy Hogan?
I am having the same question in my mind
Not too surprising that Favreau would turn down IM3, especially after Marvel’s meddling made IM2 a much weaker film, imo.
Still, whoever winds up directing IM3 will have some very big shoes to fill, though, because Favreau set the theme and tone for the Iron Man series, and it’s not going to be the same.
Would it be too much to ask that IM3 just be scrapped altogether (just wishful thinking on my part, I know)? IM2. despite its flaws, would have been a good way to end Tony Stark’s story.
If Marvel was smart, they’d take a different tone and thematic stance with IM3.
IM2 was forgettable, really big letdown from the first one (which actually had a terrible ending).
Franchise would ALL be better served if different directors did each version. The third film is the hardest to get right, and yet the expectations are the highest (for some stupid reason).
And is Disney seriously doing a Vulture movie?
“Some more fire”? Now after having crapped on Ed Norton, Feige’s crapping on Favreau?
That’s some real class, Marvel. Bravo.
Was thinking the same, Feige doesn’t really know how to talk when it comes to these kid of statements! Burn those bridges!
Thank God.
Iron Man 3 is now safe from a wreck of an actor turned director.
JF is a strong director but for IM3 I’d love to see Marvel actually go into production with an intact script that actually provides for Tony Stark being an interesting character. So far the franchise has totally relied on RDJ’s considerable talents but IM2 gave him no help at all.
Let’s be honest here Shall we?
Marvel screwed up with Iron Man 2 and Jon Favreau was piss.
Marvel are too stingy to employ Favreau again now that he will cost them much more money.
In short, Marvell are the new Fox.
I don’t want to believe you, but after that “Thor” trailer…I concur.
Favreau knows what he’s doing. I wouldn’t put it past him to do an even better film with Disney. The man is gifted, like me! lol
Best news I’ve read all week.
It is a shame considering how he barely directed Iron Man 2. At the end of Iron Man 3, a newly sober Tony Stark must battle an army of miniature iron men created by another 3rd tier villain. Marvel has some amazing writers and none of them work on the movies.
Well he isn’t a bad director, but his visual style is very similar to Peter Berg’s. The action in “Hancock” looked similar to “Iron Man”. Either way, it may be time for fresh blood anyway. What’s Alex Proyas up to? What about Wiseman? People HATE “Die Hard 4″ but for a 4th film in a fading franchise, over the top ridiculous action set pieces were the only way to go.
Another example of a studio hack meddling with a director that actually has a vision. I don’t blame Fav for bolting. They tied his hands throughout IM2. Look at the result. Kevin Feige is straight up douchebag.
Frankly, that’s a relief. hated the second one.
Is he to busy doing Couples Therapy 2. He is an over rated selfish pig this is the best news in a long time. Maybe #3 will be good because #2 really sucked
Everyone in this thread is talking about Iron Man 3 as if it is some essential piece of cinema that MUST be made.
It’s a movie about a guy in a physics defying metal suit. From movie to movie he fights ridiculously cartoonish villains who also wear physics defying coshtumes. We’ll all live without another installment. Promise.
Favs has more than proved himself as an able director on Elf, Zathura and the first Iron Man. Get off his back.
Will Favreau return as actor for the third one?
Time for a reboot!!! Both Iron Man movies were horrible, especially the second.
First Out-Of-The-Box Director Who Comes To Mind:
Steven Soderbergh. A perfect, smart risk for the franchise. Let him flex his muscles on those CGI set pieces and save us from stale blocking and bland exposition that we’d get from any other “hot” young director under 45.
Will Jon still act in it?
Good riddance. Have you seen Jon Favreau’s other movies? They suck. His only hit was Iron-Man part one and that was do to blind luck and Robert Downey Jr.’r great performance. He lacks edge as a director.
But, if Cowboys and Aliens is a hit it will be because of Steven Spielberg’s involvement. Don’t get me wrong, it could still suck, Kingdom of the Crystal Skull anyone! I’m hoping that Spielberg redeems himself with a great part 5 and stops messing around with all those other boring films like that horse movie, Lincoln and that one based on a comic strip that no one has ever heard of. Spielberg has a shining movie he could make yet he prefers to make shit most would not want to see.
Getting back to Iron-Man 3, Ainitcoolnews mentioned Paul Verhoeven that would be a great replacement. Verhoeven would be an upgrade, since Total Recall and Robocop made hundreds of millions. Verhoeven also has edge. I never met Jon Favreau, but my friends who have say he’s an over rated douche bag. But, to be fair Marvel is known for being cheap when there movies make hundreds of millions. I hope they take Favreau off The Avengers as well.
Whateverrrrr!!! He f**kin killed it in Rudy.
Elf is a classic. And your friends are losers.
Sweet! Maybe it’ll be half-way decent.
You don’t know anything…
Joss Whedon is a phenomenal writer. He should write and direct Iron Man 3.
Name one good to great movie Whedon has done??
He will ruin the Avengers…..just watch.
Buffy, Angel, and Firefly have become classics because of how great a writer he is.
