UPDATED: Showtime SVP original programming Danielle Gelber will leave the pay cable network at the end of the month when her contract is up. While the timing of her exit would probably fuel ongoing speculation that Gelber, who had worked under Robert Greenblatt at Fox and Showtime, might follow him to NBC, sources indicate that she would not be going there. At Showtime, where she has been since 2002, Gelber has shepherded The L Word, Weeds and The Big C. Here is Gelber’s statement released by Showtime:
I’ve had a remarkably fantastic time during my years at Showtime. I am deeply proud to have been so intricately involved in bringing many of the network’s signature series to our air, to say nothing of the amazingly rich roster of talented people from the creative community I’ve been privileged to work with. It’s been a life and career-shaping experience for me thanks to my many valued colleagues at the network, and I’m excited and looking very forward to where this great experience will take me next.
TV Editor Nellie Andreeva - tip her here.

I wrote an hour-long pilot for Showtime a few years ago; I didn’t have any interaction with Greenblatt, but Gary Levine and Danielle were both a pleasure to deal with. Grown-ups, intelligent, respectful of the writer, while also being clear and articulate about their network, what they needed, and what the pilot needed to have and be to fit the Showtime brand.
When the pilot didn’t go forward, Danielle was classy and gracious, and called me to thank me for the hard work. Anyone who writes for television knows how rarely that happens, as usually execs don’t want to deal with the bad news and are too busy to take the 5 minutes to thank someone who put their heart and soul into something that didn’t go forward. Danielle Gelber took the time, and that really impressed me. If she goes to NBC, NBC will be lucky to have her.
wait, why would she go to NBC? ummm, oh.
Your story about Danielle doesn’t surprise those who know her and have worked with her. She is the classiest person around. Although she’s been in TV forever, she’s not jaded like most TV execs. She has respect for writers and the process. If she ends up at NBC, they’ll be lucky to get someone as good as her, and then maybe their programming will be worth watching. Wishing her nothing but the best!
Mazel tov and good luck Danielle Claman Gelber!!
I heard there was some question about whether she would have a SVP or EVP title. Not sure what they ended up with.
i’ve had the pleasure and privilege of working with and being friends with danielle for many years.
she’s a talented, classy an deeply caring professional. wherever she ends up in tv, we and the audience are the lucky ones. all best wishes to you danielle…
Danielle is a rare, talented, humane bird. Any place she lands will be lucky to have her. There’s good TV in the future for all of us if she’s attached.
Nice to see age doesn’t always matter in this town.
Forget ‘classy and gracious’, cut to the chase. Danielle Gelber has the midas touch. Her pilots she shepherded were all-stars, going back to her time at Fox where I worked with her. “X Files,”, “Ally McBeal”, “Party of Five”. She’s kind of better than anything NBC could have for her. She’ll run a network and soon. Where she belongs.
Jeez – I was called in to float in as her assistant just for a day two months ago. It was a divine pleasure to help her out, really nice lady. I literally had no idea she was behind the greenlighting of X-Files and Ally McBeal back then. Weeds, I had already known.
That’s funny- that very same day, I was listening to Randy Runkle pitch a take on a FBI show a couple of doors away with some kind of weird slant on it(astro- traveling, anyone?).
