EXCLUSIVE: DreamWorks has made a preemptive acquisition of Southpaw, a pitch for a star vehicle for Eminem (Marshall Mathers) that will be written by Sons of Anarchy creator/exec producer Kurt Sutter. Like in Eminem’s 2002 screen starring debut 8 Mile, Southpaw will be fueled by the struggles that inform Eminem’s music and mirror his life. Eminem will play a fast-rising welterweight boxer who brawls his way to the title, only to see his world crash down around him due to tragedy. The movie is about his fight to reclaim past glory.
The pitch was bought in the room by DreamWorks co-chairman/CEO Stacey Snider, who got first crack because she championed 8 Mile when she was Universal Pictures chief. The film will be produced by Eminem’s Shady Films’ managers and producing partners Paul Rosenberg and Stuart Parr, and Alan and Peter Riche of Riche Productions. The deal comes as Eminem’s comeback album, Recovery, just got 10 Grammy Awards nominations.
Sutter, who just completed the third season of his FX series, said the project was borne out of his observation of Eminem’s struggles. “I took meetings with Marshall’s producing partners over the past 7 years, looking for something to do together,” Sutter told me. “I know he’s very selective and doesn’t do a lot. But he shared so much of his personal struggle in this raw and very honest album, one that I connected with on a lot of levels. He is very interested in the boxing genre, and it seemed like an apt metaphor, because his own life has been a brawl. In a way, this is a continuation of the 8 Mile story, but rather than a literal biography, we are doing a metaphorical narrative of the second chapter of his life. He’ll play a world champion boxer who really hits a hard bottom, and has to fight to win back his life for his young daughter. At its core, this is a retelling of his struggles over the last five years of his life, using the boxing analogy. I love that the title refers to Marshall being a lefty, which is to boxing what a white rapper is to hip hop; dangerous, unwanted and completely unorthodox. It’s a much harder road for a southpaw than a right handed boxer.”
Sutter will begin writing immediately, and he will complete a draft by February, before he and his Anarchy writers begin to plot the fourth season of the series.
“There is a rich story her that references his own experience, and I was honored to be able to continue a relationship that began with 8 Mile,” Snider told me. She’ll steer the project with DreamWorks co-president Mark Sourian. Sutter and Eminem are repped by ICM. David Schiff will be exec producer.

Ha!
Good luck, fellas.
eminem’s manager’s missed the boat on the fighter, so this is a day late and a dollar short. you’d expect more of a graceful and original idea for eminem after screwing their client by messing up the fighter for him. too late guys. sorry.
Ohh you mean when I was ont he Beach and I would hook up with girls from model Agencys on hints “then you see thenm mysteriously in Fashion campiagn ads, app! use the middle Episodes of the Sheild dau daudau dau dauu” go over an Intrisity with that Media Guy-with touch of Wimbledon wooo woooooo
!
come on man…. sutter u went a lil too far with the “dangerous, unwanted and completely unorthodox” analogy with rap. actually unorthodox is what hip hop loves….if ure good. and marshall is good. bests on this film…..
Ohh I know you didn’t miss the San Deigo Metro-politan Dentanion Center,Bureau of Prisons. You like that song take me DOWN! DOWN! DOWN! DOWN
!
how bout ^take me..down…take..me..down..wiggle..wiggle….take..me..down^
This sounds great. Eminem has never dissapointed me, neither has Kurt Sutter…looking forward to this!
Cannot fail.
Awesome I can’t wait. Kurt is a genius as is Eminen this is going to seriously ROCK!
ok i think it’s gonna be big
Kurt Sutter is a truly great writer. No doubt that the screenplay will be awesome, wish I felt the same about Eninem.
Can’t wait-I am a big fan of everything you (Kurt) are involved with and I am sure it will be a big success! You never disappoint. And Eminem is so talented, it will be a great collaberation! Looking forward to Season 4 of Sons too! I am a very big fan.
HELL YEA! Super stoked about this!
WOW..
i’m very excited about this…
I really hope Mr. Mathers can pull this off.
Congrats and good luck Kurt RT
I’m laughing so hard…I gotta check into the ER.
Bought in the room by Stacey Snider, score one for ICM.
i think this is a very good idea, obviously or it would not be on here, i think mr sutter has done a great job with SOA and THE SHIELD
I think Eminem is brilliant, as is Kurt Sutter.I can’t think of a better pair to collaborate on what should be a compelling story. I can’t wait to see this project.
what a fantastic idea, ( obviously). all cedabillity to mr sutter, he has such a creative mind when it comes to writing and i must admit im a fan of his writing skills, SOA and TS, i have enjoyed thouroughly, gripping and rels you in from start to finish so who better to have as your writer, and Eminem, credits to him also, there is not many people from any backround who would be so willing to share their personal experiences, bith good and bad, and i find that alot of people look at this as a bit of guidence, you dont have to be a celebrity part of the “in” crowd to appreciate respect and be a fan of someone, and i personaly cannot wait to see the outcome of it all, i know it will be great and many thanks shall be given to all behind making yet another successful project, thank you xx
Sounded interesting at first, then I read it was a boxing movie…
I will be watching anything, anything that Kurt Sutter puts his hands on. I will be watching anything Eminem is starring in. To me, that sounds like a dream team. We are the underdogs gettin ready for the next round. Count me in!
I agree with Bren, I would watch anything that KS has something to do with…He is amazing…I will be honest to say I am not a “Rap” fan, but, I will also say I have always thought a lot of Eminem, his struggles and his fight to be something in life…and his love for his daughter is the most important element of his life…That says a lot about a man, imo….
Wow! This is beyond amazing. 1st of all…Kurt is a one of a kind, genius is his writing. 2nd…BIG Eminem fan here. I am extremely excited to see this one hit the screen. SOA is brillant and never ceases to leave you knocked to the floor with bewilderment. I can’t even imagine the magnitude of these two putting they’re minds together to plot this and sell it. I will be utterly 1st in line! Yes Virginia, there is a Santa Claus! Merry Christmas to me!
This sounds like it will be a huge hit, sutter is an awsome writer and this type of gritty,bio-drama is what he does best.i was vary impressed with Eminem in 8 mile and am looking forward to seeing him in this role.
Didn’t I just see this and it was called…THE FIGHTER?
Congrats to Alan and Peter Riche who came up with this idea and put this project together. It’s going to be great.
so it’s a remake of “The Fighter”?
Em was okay in 8 Mile. My guess is this will stay within his range and be pretty good too. I wonder what happened to the White Boy Rick (Rick Wershe Jr.) project. I was looking forward to Em and his team getting behind that project but I guess this will have to do.
Big fan of both Mathers and Sutter, but it sounds familiar, like I’ve heard this before, white rapper playing a boxer….I can’t put my finger on it. It’ll come to me. Good luck, gentlemen.
Kurt Sutter, Matt Weiner and Terence Winter are the best writers on tv.
I agree. Sons of Anarchy and Boardwalk Empire are phenomenal.
Triple play for me: I love Sons of Anarchy, I like Eminem (most of the time) and I like Boxing Movies (When there done right)
Has potential
