EXCLUSIVE: DreamWorks has made a preemptive acquisition of Southpaw, a pitch for a star vehicle for Eminem (Marshall Mathers) that will be written by Sons of Anarchy creator/exec producer Kurt Sutter. Like in Eminem’s 2002 screen starring debut 8 Mile, Southpaw will be fueled by the struggles that inform Eminem’s music and mirror his life. Eminem will play a fast-rising welterweight boxer who brawls his way to the title, only to see his world crash down around him due to tragedy. The movie is about his fight to reclaim past glory.
The pitch was bought in the room by DreamWorks co-chairman/CEO Stacey Snider, who got first crack because she championed 8 Mile when she was Universal Pictures chief. The film will be produced by Eminem’s Shady Films’ managers and producing partners Paul Rosenberg and Stuart Parr, and Alan and Peter Riche of Riche Productions. The deal comes as Eminem’s comeback album, Recovery, just got 10 Grammy Awards nominations.
Sutter, who just completed the third season of his FX series, said the project was borne out of his observation of Eminem’s struggles. “I took meetings with Marshall’s producing partners over the past 7 years, looking for something to do together,” Sutter told me. “I know he’s very selective and doesn’t do a lot. But he shared so much of his personal struggle in this raw and very honest album, one that I connected with on a lot of levels. He is very interested in the boxing genre, and it seemed like an apt metaphor, because his own life has been a brawl. In a way, this is a continuation of the 8 Mile story, but rather than a literal biography, we are doing a metaphorical narrative of the second chapter of his life. He’ll play a world champion boxer who really hits a hard bottom, and has to fight to win back his life for his young daughter. At its core, this is a retelling of his struggles over the last five years of his life, using the boxing analogy. I love that the title refers to Marshall being a lefty, which is to boxing what a white rapper is to hip hop; dangerous, unwanted and completely unorthodox. It’s a much harder road for a southpaw than a right handed boxer.”
Sutter will begin writing immediately, and he will complete a draft by February, before he and his Anarchy writers begin to plot the fourth season of the series.
“There is a rich story her that references his own experience, and I was honored to be able to continue a relationship that began with 8 Mile,” Snider told me. She’ll steer the project with DreamWorks co-president Mark Sourian. Sutter and Eminem are repped by ICM. David Schiff will be exec producer.

Wow. This will be an awesome collaboration! I am a huge fan of Kurt’s, never missed a second of SOA. I can’t even sit down when I watch it, I have to stand right in front of tv, lol…Eminem’s so straight up, also, so this movie’s gonna rock…Good luck
Eminem is a great actor. Just watch 8 Mile. Also, He will probably win Best Song From A Motion Picture again if he creates an original song for the movie.
Yet another boxing movie. Wake me up when it’s over.
Congrats to Peter Riche a.k.a. The hardest working man in show biz!
so will slim possibly make an SOA appearance?
“I know he’s very selective and doesn’t do a lot.” Biggest under statement of the year, he’s a Mark Walhberg wanna be now because he didn’t have the balls the first time around!
God, I hope you can get insurance on this.
So…Eminem is dangerous, unwanted, and unorthodox to hip hop? Dangerous how? He’s a reclusive, recovering drug addict. Unwanted? He’s sold the most records of any living rapper. Only Tupac sold more. Unorthodox? He’s signed to the biggest rap label that isn’t Def Jam, and being a recovering addict in America ain’t “unorthodox”. Please get your facts straight…or is that less important than building anticipation for this project with this little blurb of yours? You guys are playing catch-up, anyway…FX, SOA’s network, has a series about a boxer premiering early next year, as I’m sure you know…let’s not forget the upcoming Mark Wahlberg vehicle…or all the other boxing movies starring working-class white guys…all you need to do now is set it in Boston or one of the surrounding neighborhoods to complete the cliche…come on, there are more stories that can be told about working class white people, SOA showed us that…you guys need to try harder instead of doing what 8Mile did, which was pander to Eminem’s fans…Why don’t you put him in something that actually requires him to act?
Like a “Lee Harvey Oswald” bio-pic?
Dangerous, he is dangerous because he has his own rap-style and because he is white
Unwanted, he WAS unwanted because he was( and still is, i hope) white rapper
Unorthodox, it WAS not usual with white rappers when he started his career
You see, NOW we enjoy and love his works but in 1995-1997, when he tried to get a name in this “rap-business”, he was all those things above, particularly unwanted.
sold more than tupac
Can’t wait to see this! Kurt Sutter is a brilliant writer. If this project has half of the creativity and originality of SOA, it will be amazing!
Boxing? do we really need another boxing movie? there’s so much creative potential here
Ugh! Who cares about Eminem? All he does is bitch and moan about his rough life in the Detroit ghetto. Ya know what Marshall? You’re a rich white boy now. You haven’t been street in a long time. I hope Taylor Swift and Elton John get together and give you a beat down.
@slim shady – That is hilarious!
I like Sutter’s work on SOA. I love Eminem’s work on Everything. But I don’t know about this boxing movie. Especially when the idea seems to come out so close to Walbergs boxing movie
A boxing movie? Does Em hang out @ Kronk? It reminds me of “The Simpsons” bit where a studio exec asks Homer what type of films does the average man want to see, and Homer tells him confidentially that Hollywood should do projects about World War 2 & vampires
its not just boxing a movie, its not about boxing. if you read it, the whole movie is a metaphor based on eminems struggles and how he had to obviously fight to get back to the top. its not literally a boxing movie.
wonder if they can change the plot to an up and coming fry cook who gets his big chance at running a really cool restaurant…has that been done???
The “Southpaw” title has already been used for a 1991 doc about an Irish boxer who fights racism in Ireland.
This is gonna be such a sick ass movie I hope he makes a hella sick song like he did for 8 mile, “lose yourself” I bet he makes a soundtrack for the movie, I bet its gonna be really inspirational like the song lose yourself I’m excited I’m a huge fan of eminem!
my fav. rapper is eminem i love boxing and am a southpaw so ill love the movie the fighter was ok mark wahlberg and christian bale are great actors but i knoe that southpaw would be better and this movie would be like a paquio movie and i hope eminem gets some boxing lessons and accepts nick cannons challenge of going into the ring i just hope eminem knocks out nick .
Kurt Sutter simply amazing!Put in the mix with Eminem…..PRICELESS!
