EXCLUSIVE: In what would be his first major series gig, Ethan Hawke is in talks to star in the Fox drama project Exit Strategy. In addition to starring, Hawke would also serve as producer on the show, which hails from 20th Century Fox TV and Kurtzman and Orci’s 20th TV-based K.O. Paper Products. Exit Strategy, which is being written by David Guggenheim (Safe House), was originally set up at Fox in September with a put pilot commitment. With Hawke on board, the project would likely be ordered to pilot after the network receives the script at the end of the month, with A-list directors already circling it. Described as a high octane procedural, Exit Strategy centers on a team of 5 experts associated with the CIA who are deployed when a CIA operation goes bad to extract the ones involved before it’s too late. Hawke would play the team leader, the architect of exit strategy who also empathizes with the people they extract and would rather die than let them get hurt. Each episode would tackle a different crisis in a different country. Exit Strategy is envisioned as a potential successor to Fox’s signature drama 24. Like 24, the action in Exit Strategy would also unfold in real-time. And like 24′s Kiefer Sutherland, Hawke would segue from the feature world to take on the lead in Exit Strategy, his first series. Kurtzman, Orci and KOPP’s Heather Kadin are executive producing the project, with Guggenheim co-executive producing.
Hawke’s only previous series appearance was in an episode of J.J. Abrams’ ABC series Alias, in which he also payed a CIA agent. The Oscar and Tony nominated actor-writer-director recently directed the well received off-Broadway revival of Sam Shepard’s A Lie of the Mind for the New Group, just wrapped the feature The Woman in the Fifth and will be seen on stage in the New Group’s Blood From a Stone, with previews tonight in advance of the January 6 opening night. He is with CAA. Kurtzman and Orci, co-creators/executive producers of two series, Fox’s Fringe and CBS’ Hawaii Five-0, have already received one pilot order this season, for Fox’s Locke & Key, which is casting. On the feature side, the two most recently co-wrote and are producing the upcoming Cowboys & Aliens, and Kurtzman is set to start directing Welcome to People, which he and Orci co-wrote, in January.

What’s with all those film actors going to TV? Not that they are very successfull on TV, Tim Rooth, Lawrence Fishburne, Gabriel Byrne, Christian Slatter, Glenn Close ( I’m probably forgetting some) none of them are making any splash in the ratings. Personally, I see actors going to TV as a step back, them not getting any hits in the movies anymore so they fall back on tv projects that a few years ago they would never even had a look at.
Film actors to TV? Making $200,000-$300,000 a week is not
a bad gig.
I can’t wait for “Exit Strategy”…This will take the place of the major void in television when “24″ disappeared. We need REAL TIME action.
Why? with all the talented actors out there.
STUPID IDEA! Fox you can’t ever replace 24 or Kiefer Sutherland. Nothing can or ever will replace 24. Really stupid idea! You can’t be serious w/ this crap!
Most television is about redundancy; it’s why CBS does so well. This show is like 24 cross-bred with the Unit and a bit of Human Target. As Landgraf said last week, “I don’t know if subtlety is something the American public is buying in droves… I wouldn’t say that subtlety and nuance describes the most successful kind of pop content in America today.” So, why wouldn’t FOX try and recreate something as successful as 24? The shows that are way more unique (your Community, Terriers, Mad Men, Louie) are all pretty low rated. FOX tried something a little more cable anti-hero-y with Lonestar and America wasn’t buying it. What would you like them to do?
Wow… what a rip off. Unless this is a literal successor to 24– as in, inhabits the same universe/crosses over some characters– this is just a cheap imitation of the real thing. How sad, Fox. How sad.
hollywood doesnt want to pay these veteran actors because of their huge salaries.
in the philippines, most the film industry is dead, and most big name movie stars are doing tv work nowadays.
why? because of film piracy.
Why not? Let’s try out EXIT STRATEGY. Ethan Hawke is already a huge FAVE of mine, I’d definitely watch this show for at least half of one season (to give it a fair chance). That is a significant time commitment, bcz usually CSPAN is more to my liking. I did watch each episode of ’24′ Seasons 7 and 8, bcz the actor playing Pres Taylor, Cherry Jones, is a fave.
What I like the most about Mr. Hawke is how charmingly RESPECTFUL he is.
Does anybody know, when it is airing… I can’t wait to watch it too… it kind of reminds me of the political conspiracy and action movie… (Love this movie)… SHOOTER…
