EXCLUSIVE: The approval of the MGM pre-packaged bankruptcy has opened the door for the long-gestating comedy The Three Stooges to get made at 20th Century Fox. The studio has taken the project over from MGM and has scheduled a March 14 start date for the comedy. Bobby and Peter Farrelly will direct a script they wrote with Mike Cerrone. Conundrum partner Bradley Thomas will produce with Charles B. Wessler. The film will be exec produced by Earl Benjamin, the gatekeeper of the Stooges estate, and the stepson of Joe DeRita. DeRita was the sixth member of the troupe. He played the role originated by Jerome “Curly” Howard, who suffered a stroke and was succeeded by his brother Samuel (Shemp). After Shemp died suddenly, he was replaced by Joe Besser, who gave way to the vaudeville vet De Rita.
The project has no cast at this point. Jim Carrey and Sean Penn are out, and it is unclear whether Benicio Del Toro will play Moe. The deal brings the project back to Fox, where the Farrellys are based. The Three Stooges has been a passion project for Conundrum for over a decade, first at Columbia Pictures, then Warner Bros, and finally MGM. Things looked strong with Carrey, Penn and Del Toro until Penn took a sabbatical for personal reasons. He floated in and out, and then everything halted when MGM hit the financial rocks last year.
The Farrellys know that casting such iconic roles has always been a tall order, but Peter Farrelly told me that they will play to their strength: a terrific script which will be made for a reasonable budget. They will begin casting immediately.
The picture takes place when the trio are dumped out as newborns at the door of an orphanage, and they are talking with Richard Jenkins to play the head nun who is terrorized by the precocious Stooges. The comedy follows them to adulthood and is very much in the spirit of the original shorts, in which the blue collar bumblers got the best of the wealthy society matrons that tried to exploit them. Oh, yeah, there will be the non-stop physical comedy that is the trademark of the Stooges franchise.
“The script is ready to go, and we are opening up these roles to the world right now,” Peter Farrelly told me. “We’ll make it with the best possible people. Our feeling is that no star is too big to audition and no matter who it is, we’re going to have to see him in the role. This is not The Flinstones. You’ve got to be Moe Howard, Larry Fine and Curly Howard, and that could be a major movie star or an unknown.”
The film is eye-ing Atlanta as location and the movie will follow the format of the original shorts that the Stooges made for Columbia Pictures chief Harry Cohn over 24 years. The film will be divided into three segments, each 27 minutes long, which gives the Farrellys the chance to use all three of the signature theme songs that started the classic shorts. The goal is to make a PG film, and still incorporate the physical comedy.
“There will be non-stop slapping, more in the tone of Dumb and Dumber than anything else we’ve done,” Farrelly said. “Our goal is 85 minutes of laughs in a film that will be very respectful of who the Stooges were. It’s by far the riskiest project we’ve ever done, without question, but it is also the one closest to our hearts.”

They should shoot it in Bakersfield, or parts of LA that still have that 30 depression era vibe.
placerville would also be a good place for filming also, think it all depends on (what)the theme is in the movie, maybe for a change they could be loggers?? grew up with the STOOGES for 50 years now and I still think their at the top for ORIGINAL comedy!
Is there a chance that will Ferrill Might play Shemp
if there is going to be a Shemp. He Played Bar Tender
W.C. Fields The Bankdick. He was good with on-liners
The One Where They are running A drug store
they create the The drug to make OLd People Young
A the Birthday Cake made with Bubble Gum instead
of Marshmellows.
They Play a Trubadors “Three Restless Knights.”
Shemps Days are not to Hot either
Or where Moe,Larry are trying get Shemp Married Classics
no doubt, kevin james should play curly!
More like Larry the Cable guy to play Curly.
Kevin James as Curly, Adam Sandler as Moe, and Rob Schnider as Larry.
Bad f**king idea. This is going to blow and it is still going to do well because of ignorant tards like you.
I disagree. THIS is a monumentally bad idea… that will do very little business despite the ‘tards, as there will not be enough ‘tardage in the seats to make a profit. They BETTER cast unknowns ’cause that budget better not go over 20 million. And even then… woo-woo-woo-woo-woo-woo-woo!
yes, this movie is a horrible idea. just remaster and save the laughs that we have already with the stooges. and if they want to brings the stooges to another generation, “well its called word of mouth and it seems to work well.” my niece is 4 years old and love the stooges now. the original stooges. why would you ruin it for the children like her. here is an idea RE-RELEASE the original movies in theaters.
No way Adam Sandler. If you take an open honest look at his style he plays the same thing in every situation. Same goes for Jim Carey and Will Ferrell. They all are one trick ponys. Carey probably has the greatest range of all, and that ain’t saying much. That is what was great about Sean Penn, he has a wide range.
well first of all Are we originating or imitating. To do a original
they need to cast for the part do interviews with comedians I would like to see it be original. Use the comedians name not Moe Larry and Curly. the stooges were originals they choose there stage names and when they replaced they didnt choose to call replacements Curly there ws shemp and Joe And Curly joe. The Three stooges were a style perfected by these men. I hope they decide to be original about this new movie. And not makeing it a imitation of originals because they are Classic icons. Stay true to there style and form but please please dont try to immitate be original. If they decide to use professional actors I wont be watching.
Stooges should be shot in Iowa where there are all the settings at low costs plus an experienced cadre of filmmakers and actors recently left underemployed by a stooge of a governor…
please dont mess this picture up with untrue scenes like the tv movies did. where moe is washing harry cohns car because they were thru not true} or shemp being a real pansy type of guy. even after cohn died the stooges were only out of work for a very short period. the tv kiddee audience revitalized their career hence the filming of have rocket will travel. harry fender of st. louis had a kids show on in the 50s and worked in vaudville with the stooges and asked moe if he could show the shorts. try and show them as people not as slapping machines. i can only say that i talked to larry up till his death and they were really very nice guys, who i dont think knew how much they were loved. please farrellys do this right. thank you
Great love to see it !! (yuk, yuk, yuk )
My Husband Brian Kirkpatrick and myself believe that David Paymer would make an excellent Larry in The Three Stooges
I sure hope they dont pollute the movie with alot of sex and profanity, like american filmmakers seem to be doing with the remake of classics these days.
I am glad they are making this movie. There is an entire generation who have no idea who the Stooges are.
Another great MGM project lost to another studio.
i think the trio from the big bang theory would be great. they are funny and get along with each other….
Too bad they look absolutely nothing like the stooges. hello???
Right? Not to mention, when was the last time Penn starred in a comedy?
DeRita didn’t “play the role originated by Jerome ‘Curly’ Howard.” Curly Joe, Joe and Shemp were all completely different characters who succeeded Howard.
Nice to see that someone caught that.
“non-stop slapping.”
Good luck.
Johnny Knoxville.
Maybe those 2 guy’s from the show ( who’s line is it anyway’s)drew carey
Drew Carey is an EXCELLENT idea.
knoxville as moe steveo as curly and bam margera as larry
Just like one of there pictures they did for jackass 3d
i want a serious cast not someone who will be strung out the whole time on heroine. just leave the stooges alone, digitally remaster the collection we have already. but like the money grubbing whores that they are i’m sure fox will ruin these classical favorites. i would rather see the stooges get lost to history than be destroyed by some “ignoromouses” like the jackass crew.
These guys are HILARIOUS!!!! I bet they would be awesome on that game show on NBC. “Minute to Win It” You know what? Just in honor of the Stooges, I’m gonna watch their premiere on Tuesday December 7 at 8/7 c on NBC. Long Live the Stooges….and MTWI.
I’m a victim of coicumstance!
I resemble that remark!
“Quiet, numbskulls, I’m broadcasting!”
Paul Giamatti would be perfect as Larry Fine.
Brilliant idea. Love Giamatti.
Rainn Wilson as Moe?
David Cross as Larry?
Reginald VelJohnson as Curly? (A black Curly, why not?!?)
WITHOUT QUESTION
I saw a test screening for their latest flick Hall Pass. If Stooges is half as good as Hall Pass I’ll be there opening day. The Farrelly’s are the kings of physical comedy for this generation.
when Jim Carrey (who hasn’t been relevant in 10 years) says no to your project, it’s time to pass entirely.
I am disgusted by the fact that the de Rita family controls the Stooges empire.
Last time I checked Comedy III controlled the stooge properties which is owned by the Howard and Fine families
Well said Klaatu. Without question DeRita was the least funny. However, I believe his heirs gained control due to the fact that the Fine and Howard heirs were leaving the DeRita family out of the profits. I also believe that Bela Lugosi Jr. represented the DeRita family in court and won.
P.S. Klaatu was definitely one of the all-time great Canadian Rock bands!
Nonsense.
The DeRita stepsons have done a wonderful job of maintaining a presence for the Stooges, managing the property, and seeing to it that all of the relevant parties involved get their fair share of the income that the Stooges still manage to generate after all these years. It certainly seems a far more equitable situation than in years past.
And while we’re at it, Joe DeRita himself did a great job in that thankless task of filling the very big shoes that Curly left behind as the third stooge. He brought his own spin to the proceedings, and fit in very well with the somewhat gentler image that the older, latter day Stooges consciously cultivated.
He was a very fine and talented comedian in his own right and I think deserves more respect than he has perhaps gotten.
And no…I’m not a member of the family, just a genuine fan.
I COMPLETELY AGREE!! GOT A LITTLE PISSED WHEN I READ THAT TOO!
Giomantti (spelled it wrong but oh well) would be a good larry…
Robin williams curly?
if john candy was alive he would have been a great curly
is nothing sacred? do we need a 3 stooges movie? wow, worst idea ever
What you suggest, The Brady Bunch?
I agree. Some things are just left alone.
Very bad plan making this movie. Back in their day the Stooges had to be Entertaining and Funny because the Studio was still in the Entertainment business.
Now it is just a matter of Hollywood throwing trash at stupid people and making money, marketing toys, memorabilia etc. And fluffing up marginally talented comedians as the stars.
Anything with Jim Carrey, Jack Black or Will Ferrel would be the kiss of death for this project.
Maybe they can get Paul Giamatti back as Larry if Sean Penn’s a no-go. Evan Handler and Michael Chiklis were good as Larry and Curly in the TV-movie they did a few years ago.
I am so happy that the three stooges is back
LOVE THEM GUYS. Hope these guys are funny also
I think Providence, RI. would be a good location to shoot some scenes at least.
Providence would be great for a location. Dumb and Dumber done there, and it has buildings and locations there that still look like the 1930′s. Thank God they are back, not that they ever left. I found out recently my sisters’ sister-in-law was Larry Fine’s cousin……I feel like I have found out I am connected (six degrees of seperation) to royalty!!!
Being a Rhode Islander, I would love to see it filmed there.
And Michael Chiklis as Curly would be wonderful. And Paul Giamati, wonderful actor and would be excellent as Larry.
I they they should look at kevin james or john goodman for curly, either of them wld be perfect for the role
At LEAST Sean Penn and Jim Carey are out.
I was wincing at the thought of Penn’s over-wrought interpretation of Larry Fine:
“We’re trapped like rats, &$%@^-it! All I ever wanted to be was to be myself…to be free…..but now….(voice trailing off)we’re just trapped…trapped like rats…”
You said it all! HAHAHAHA But come to think of it, it would be fun to see SP get slapped around
Now THAT, I would pay to see!
This has been in the making for a LONGGGG time; so very happy to see that it’s up and running again….Congrats to the Farleys, and most definitely to Mike Cerrone. Good Luck, can’t wait to see this.
Pam
This will be very difficult to cast. Will either be a blockbuster or a flop…nothing in the middle here. Perhaps Jon Lovitz as Curley? They should film in the older parts of LA as they can actually use some of the same streets. To bad Columbia didn’t cash in on this (again). The Little Rascals movie was OK and brought them into the current time, but recreating the past almost impossible. Only after the premiere will we know.
wow, just mentioning JON LOVITZ …. i do think he might do well as LARRY !!!
I am really hoping that Jason Alexander will play one of the stooges.
Detroit would be perfect !! And cheep to film here !!
No Del Torro or for God’s sake not Sean Penn. I would refuse to watch it with that idiot in there.
the stooges are a classic that can not be redone it will not do the legends of comedy justice come up with a new idea and stop ripping of the classics and destroying them the stoghges will live on they are legends
