To all those agents who secretly dream of directing… I can’t think of a Hollywood journey like Tony Krantz’s. The son of Beverly Hills novelist Judith Krantz, he went from head of primetime packaging at CAA (where he helped put together ER, The West Wing, Twin Peaks, Beverly Hills 90210) and then CEO of Imagine Television (where he exec produced Felicity and 24 among other shows with JJ Abrams, Peter Berg, Aaron Sorkin, and David Lynch) to directing 3 1/2 years ago. Since then, he’s helmed 3 films. The first two, Sublime (a surreal horror flicks) and Otis (a horror comedy), were put out by Warner Bros Home Video under the Raw Feed genre label. Now he’s wrapped directing his first theatrical which has just landed distribution with Anchor Bay after a competitive bidding situation.
Titled The Big Bang, the stylish noir indie was produced by Richard Rionda’s Hannibal Pictures and Krantz’s own Flame Ventures and stars Antonio Banderas with a large supporting cast including Sam Elliott, William Fichtner, Thomas Kretschmann, Delroy Lindo, Sienna Guillory, and Snoop Dogg. It was written by Erik Jendresen (Band Of Brothers). WME’s Graham Taylor orchestrated the sale.
Krantz is keeping his hand in TV. His company just sold 4 dramas (the most of any indie) to NBC this year: The Fixer, written by Wayne Kramer (The Cooler) and co-produced with Colin Callender, the former head of HBO movies; Sideline Reporter, written by Ron Shelton (Bull Durham); Ritual Crime, written by Adam Simon (Haunting In Connecticut); and Untitled Dance Drama, written by Duane Adler (Save The Last Dance) and co-produced with Larry Mark (Dreamgirls).
Editor-in-Chief Nikki Finke - tip her here.

He’s made barely watchable straight to video flicks and has brokered some standard pilot script deals. Aiming for run of the mill, he’s hit the target. Theatrical distribution from Anchor Bay is a nicer way of saying direct to dvd.
Yes. Here’s some of Anchor Bay’s recently “released”(straight to video) movies.
Spread
Hunt to Kill
Solitary Man
And Soon the Darkness
City Island – this was really awful.
The New Daughter
The Open Road
Your point is well made, Agent Assistant.
Solitary Man made 5m theatrical.
i’m sure you’ll move up from assistant in no time with that awesome disposition. cheers
“Competitive bidding situation” makes it sound like more than one company wanted to buy this thing, which is hard to imagine.
That guy is a serious low life by the way.

Atta boy Tony! Relentless producer who gets what he wants; tv slate is impressive.
Congratulations, Tony! Happy to see you continuing your directing career and happy to have had a hand in it. You’ve always been a great gentleman and a pleasure to work with.
I hear that Reece Pearson is a big part of Tony’s success over at Flame. He’s the straw that stirs the drink!
Tony is a class act with integrity. He will continue to succeed in this town because he is a serious student of Hollywood and pratices what he preaches. May this next chapter in his life be as wildly successful as his past! Go Tony!
He is a good person and I like his work. He does good job making movies and shows. I love Tony Krantz. Yay for him
Look at the TV shows he has been a part of. Clearly he know what he is doing. Half of the stuff that comes out in theaters right now isn’t even worth watching, so it’s a little crazy to jump all over this before you have even seen it. If you call 24, felicity, sports night, the PJs, twin peaks, 90210, and ER run of the mill it’s obvious why you are an agent’s ASSISTANT.
Anchorbay is a joke,
this will be another straight to dvd feature
i was privileged to see an advance screening of “the big bang” and it is a tightly strutured and well directed picture. i am confident that tony krantz will have a long and successful career directing as well as producing

i only want to see the big bang for william fichtner (detective poley) was he in it a lot?
NF– you forgot all the burnt bridges along the way. Ask anyone in this town.
Great Story Nikki. Had The Privelege to Meet Mr. Krantz doing yoga. I have always been impressed about how real humble & grounded Tony is considering his success. I expect Mr. Krantz will continue growing as a director as he has a knack for working with the best TV Legends Mr. Bill Haber & Mr. Lee Gabler at CAA, attracting his brilliant wife who is a Very Successful Animation CEO Working with Hollywood Hall Of Famer Mr. Grazer & now building his own Production Co. Team. When one talks to Tony one realizes this guy loves everything A to Z about the arduous process of shooting films & comes away inspired by his passion & respect for the craft. Tony is paying his dues as he did when he started at CAA & I believe 100% in my heart Tony will make some classic films & continue creating great brand equity for Hollywood.
the big bang was one of the best scripts of recent memory turned into one of the most lousy movies ive seen in a while
It is easy to hate, but what he’s done is pretty damn cool.
A lot of people who come from money and being Krantz’s son he’s got some money don’t do anything with their lives except spend money they never made. Whether you like Tony or not you have to give the guy credit for going out there and working very hard to make it on his own. He’s also a very nice guy.
If more people treated other producers in the industry with the same respect Reece Pearson has given me,just maybe this industry wouldn’t be as ugly as it is.While I’ve just begun to work with both Reece and Tony, even their rejections of a project are done with sensitivity and class. They simply love good material…a good story… and their door is open AND they return phone calls! What more can you ask. Some of you other directors could learn a few things from both of them.No ego, just talent.
Tony and I grew up at CAA together and I saw him succeed firsthand. No one worked harder than Tony and NO ONE came up with more ideas than Tony. Some bad, some good and a lot of them were great. He was always thinking outside the box and he said 20 years ago he would direct one day and he did. In a town where no one says an exec can be creative, Tony proved them wrong. A lot of unsuccessful ,envious people like to post their idiotic comments here and wish everyone to live the fate they have lived… as a failure. Good for you Tony… keep working.
Tony always had really good taste at CAA. Seems odd that he focused on horror material based on the type of projects he liked to work on at CAA. That said, it doesn’t hurt to have F**k you money behind you to pursue your art.
When dealing with TK, trust…but be damned sure to verify.
Oh Jeez…. Just what we need…
Kinda makes me a little queasy for
reasons I can’t quite explain.
All this is well and good, but look at the credits since 24, and then talk to me about taste or talent.
Yes. Bomb, no?
Hey all ya’ll. You guys want to wait until you see the trailer of THE BIG BANG and then discuss. I was in awe of the trailer when I saw it awhile ago. Stop hatin’….start appreciatin’
Here’s to Reece Pearson– truly the guy who keeps the trains running on time over there, aka the man in the shadows, aka the ragin’ cajun.
