EXCLUSIVE: After one of the longest courtships in recent TV history, TNT is prepared to proceed with its Dallas reboot without original star Larry Hagman over salary issues. Hagman and fellow Dallas alums Linda Gray and Patrick Duffy were first approached by TNT and Warner Horizon TV about joining a potential updated Dallas series in late summer 2009 when the project was put in development. A year later, at the beginning of September this year, TNT ordered 3 pilots, including Dallas. The reboot, written and executive produced by Cane creator Cynthia Cidre, was described by the network as focusing “on the offspring of bitter rivals and brothers J.R. and Bobby Ewing, who clash over the future of the Ewing dynasty while the fate of Southfork itself weighs in the balance.” The subsequent breakdown for the pilot listed the characters of J.R.’s son, John Ross, and Bobby and Pam Ewing’s adopted son, Christopher, as the leads, while Duffy’s Bobby, Hagman’s J.R. and Gray’s Sue Ellen were down as supporting. TNT has since cast the other two pilots ordered at the same as Dallas, Perception and the untitled Allan Loeb project, as well as another one, Bird Dog, which it greenlighted almost 2 months later. But there has been virtually no movement on Dallas as TNT and Warner Horizon had been looking to lock in the original actors before casting the leads. While Gray and Duffy had agreed to join the pilot, the network and the studio have not been able to reach a deal with Hagman who has been holding out for more money. (Make that a lot of money.) With the situation at a stalemate more than 3 months in, I hear the project’s producers have come up with an alternative plan for the project that doesn’t include Hagman, with J.R. represented only through archive footage from the original series. And I hear that TNT brass really liked the revised script by Cidre that doesn’t feature present-day J.R., which is said to be as good as the original script. Negotiations with Hagman continue and there is still a good chance that he will ultimately sign on, but he doesn’t have a big leverage anymore as the producers and the network are moving to cast the other roles and shoot the pilot with or without him. Warners and TNT have already started seeing people for the leads on tape in New York. Meanwhile, Hagman just won $1.1 million in an arbitration ruling against Citigroup (plus $10 million in punitive damages he plans to give to charities), and he also recently signed on to guest star in an episode of Desperate Housewives.
TV Editor Nellie Andreeva - tip her here.

hes an idiot..unless they were really low balling him…get on the show larry and then get a raise…i want to see you on the show!
“hes an idiot…” there’s an idiot here alright but is not him. If you can’t express yourself without using name-calling there’s a website for people like you… youtube.
Hagman needs the money. Livers are not cheap.
what an asshole comment
It’s not DALLAS without the REAL J.R. TNT
Don’t risk it.
That’s true for everyone over 45 who was a fan before. I doubt any of the new audience that has to be attracted to make it work, will care if LH is on it or not. Sad but true. He probably has no leverage. I hope he gets what he wants and gets on the show.
No J.R., No Dallas.
I’m sick and tired or “reboots” and “remakes”, if the TV and film people can’t come up with something new and their own ideas, I say shut down the entire industry. We have the INTERNET now days to watch the REAL films and TV shows from the 80s and 90s all over again, can you say Hulu?
He has to know that he hasn’t been in any position to demand a large salary in a decade and a half. This is going to be an ensemble and on basic cable.I bet he’s expecting a network salary.
“He has to know that he hasn’t been in any position to demand a large salary in a decade and a half.”
No he hasn’t. But, this is the one property where he does have a position. The producer’s know this and will most likely meet him halfway.
It’s too bad. After his successful run on the original Dallas, I would think anything TNT would pay him would be gravy at this point. He’s not a pauper is he?
He knows his worth and knows the show won’t be the same without him, but I hope he reconsiders. This ain’t the 80s (for Larry or the industry).
Hagman was marvelous in the original, especially the early days before J.R. became a cartoon. But Hagman’s always been ALL about the money, no matter how much it harmed the show.
In the later years of Dallas, even as ratings trailed off, Hagman insisted on an ever-increasing salary, way out of proportion to the rest of the cast. So, to compensate, the producers started getting rid of other salaries (Victoria Principal, Susan Howard, Steve Kanaly, Linda Gray, Barbara Bel Geddes) in order to continue to pay Hagman. That killed the show. J.R. was great as part of the ensemble, but when everyone else was replaced with lesser lights, it was like the Fonzie/Urkel syndrome – waaaaay too much J.R.
This affected the reunion movies, too. After paying Hagman’s salary, there wasn’t much left for anyone else, so very few original actors returned.
Again, I like Hagman’s performances and think he’s a great actor, but he’s also a greedy bastard. He’s looking for his old salaray, and they’ll never be able to meet it on a cable budget.
Does anyone really care?
No
Apparently, you do since you took the time to read the article, then comment on it.
As stated above, there is no ‘Dallas’ without JR.
This is probably a leak by the producers to leverage his deal. The man doesn’t need to work, he’s loaded. Obviously trying to maintain some integrity and quote. This man has monster series under his belt, do some research.
Seems that if Hagman doesn’t come to terms with TNT/Warner, the pilot can be at JR’s funeral. JR dying would be a great catalyst to start all kinds of backstabbing and turmoil with the remaining Ewings.
A long time ago, I read that Magman got screwed out of a lot of money he should have gotten for ‘I Dream of Jeannie’ and that all of the contention over his salary during Dallas’ original run was due to his philosophy of not ever getting screwed like that again.
While I can see him needing money these days, I would also say that that same hard-nosed attitude is there as well.
Obviously he’s testing the waters to see just how important his character is going to be to the show. No matter – its a reboot and it will fail like all the others. I don’t think Larry cares one way or another – they either pay him what he wants or he goes back to staring at the ocean and do a few guest spots a year.
I certainly don’t think all the recent reboots/remakes have failed.
Battlestart Galactica
Nikita
Hawaii Five-0
90210
Outsourced
The Office
Dead Zone
LOL@This Loser…
“I certainly don’t think all the recent reboots/remakes have failed.
Battlestart Galactica
Nikita
Hawaii Five-0
90210
Outsourced
The Office
Dead Zone”
1. Battlestar Galactica — FAILED AND CANCELED.
2. Nikita — A Show NO ONE Watches-Soon to be Canceled.
3. Hawaii Five-0 — Good reviews-still waiting to see what happens.
4. 90210 — The Show is a so-so hit because of JENNIE GARTH, TORI SPELLING AND SHANNEN DOHERTY all from the real Beverly Hills 90210. This is WHY TNT wants Larry Hagman.
5. Outsourced — a Boomer!! Soon to be Canceled.
6. The Office is a remake from a BRITISH TV SHOW therefore is NEW to America and not a remake per say.
7. The Dead Zone is NOT a remake but it was born from an almost 30 year old movie.
Let me guess you are a liberal and Obama is “the best president ever”… how’s that change working out for you, loser?
Let’s start to pick this apart…
1. Yeah…a series that lasted for 4 years and 75 episodes, got GREAT critical acclaim and a LOT of viewers to SciFi is a failure.
2. Nikita’s been greenlit for a full season. Not going anywhere anytime soon.
3. Ditto Hawaii Five-O.
4. Trust me, the reasons you gave as 90210 being a “so-so hit” aren’t correct. None of ‘em were meant to be full-time regulars.
5. Ooooh….for a show that’s “Soon to be cancelled”, why is it getting the timeslot after 30 Rock?
6. And it’s also lasted longer than the original(then again, there are differences between how British series handle their seasons and how American series do).
7. Yes and no.
One last thing, Chris…save the political jabs for ANOTHER website. This ain’t it, junior.
Re: item #6. If you’re going to use the phrase, “per se,” please note its spelling.
Are you out of your mind? Battlestar Galactica was incredible the second time around? Did you even watch it?
Four years is hardly a failure!
The spinoff, Caprica, didn’t do so well. Maybe you’re thinking of that? But BSG was a really, really good series. I loved the original as a child, and I loved the new one even more!
I’m glad they have Linda Gray! Sue Ellen is the only reason I watched the show. I’d love to see an interesting relationship develop between Sue Ellen and Pam. Linda is very easy to work with and she can bring poor writing to life…
Here’s hoping Larry will come around and TNT will give him their best possible offer. Not that Hagman needs an ego boost, but the facT remains that Larry Hagman IS Dallas. Without him, Duffy, Grey and “the next generation” will seem out of place. (By the way, is Charlene Tilton getting the shaft YET again?)
Wow. Someone must have skipped class they day they taught how to start a new paragraph…
I have to echo the above statements. A “Dallas” without the original actors is just some tarted-up evening soap with 20-somethings.
TNT is no longer consdiering filming the exteriors in Dallas and North Texas. Last I heard, they may be relocating to Louisiana, mainly due to tax incentives.
Unless new HD versions of Southfork are filmed, does TNT really think Louisiana will pass for Dallas? (Hint – it won’t.) And if anyone has seen the real Southfork, it now looks like a pretty small home compared to the outrageous residential products that have been built by others over the years.
I am not hopeful about this so-called reboot.
archive footage of JR? Don’t be silly.
I think Hagman should be on the show but holding out for big money is ridiculous. There offer is for supporting not lead. Come off your high horse Larry…
The show will likely get canceled anyway…
Hagman clearly sees the writing on the wall and would rather not derail what is likely a cozy life to film 8 episodes of a show that will be cancelled after 2 just for a paycheck.
I rather see a remake of I Dream Of Jeannie anyway.
I’m really excited for this project, but Larry Hagman knows what he’s doing. He held out for more money in 1980, got it, and both he and the show reaped the rewards.
If they give him what he wants, it’ll be worth it to all parties. But if they don’t – I don’t think it’s an example of him being greedy; just that this man seems to have a lot of experience negotiating and won’t take less than the best.
And worse comes to worse, he could always appear later. And if the show flops completely, he escaped it. Win-win.
“No he hasn’t. But, this is the one property where he does have a position. The producer’s know this and will most likely meet him halfway.”
Great comment and exactly right. It’s now or never for him.
“He’s looking for his old salaray, and they’ll never be able to meet it on a cable budget.”
How do you know what he is asking for? I’ve never heard Hagman referred to as a dumb negotiator.”
As someone else said, he doesn’t NEED this. TNT needs HIM. A J.R. funeral would be a good kick off but from there? Archive footage mixed in with the new scenes? LOL give me a break. Will they be showing people reminisce about how J.R. yelled at them 3o years ago? Just make the deal TNT.
There’s a reason why reboots like this RARELY work.
Dallas once captured the magic . . . the zeitgeist of the country . . . 30 years ago.
It worked back then, and it was largely due to some great writing and Larry Hagman who was so wickedly good back then. But if you have ever watched the special reunions, then you know that that magic was a long time ago, never to be recaptured again.
Everyone seems to just be dancing around the issue. Hagman and his team drastically overvalued his financial worth to the show, got too greedy and played hardball just a little too hard. They played it wrong — they lost and now have no leverage. Another example of faded stars overestimating their worth.
He was way better in Nixon anyway so whatevs.
